2019-06-21status: warn when a/b calculation takes too longLibravatar Jeff Hostetler1-0/+17
The ahead/behind calculation in 'git status' can be slow in some cases. Users may not realize that there are ways to avoid this computation, especially if they are not using the information. Add a warning that appears if this calculation takes more than two seconds. The warning can be disabled through the new config setting advice.statusAheadBehind. 2019-06-21status: remove the empty line after hintsLibravatar John Lin1-4/+0
Before this patch, there is inconsistency between the status messages with hints and the ones without hints: there is an empty line between the title and the file list if hints are presented, but there isn't one if there are no hints. This patch remove the inconsistency by removing the empty lines even if hints are presented. Signed-off-by: John Lin <johnlinp@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2019-06-19ref-filter: sort detached HEAD lines firstlyLibravatar Matthew DeVore1-2/+2
Before this patch, "git branch" would put "(HEAD detached...)" and "(no branch, rebasing...)" lines before all the other branches *in most cases* except for when using Chinese-language messages. zh_CN generally uses a full-width "(" symbol (codepoint FF08) to match the full-width proportions of Chinese characters, and the translated strings we had did use them. This meant that the detached HEAD line would appear after all local refs and even after the remote refs if there were any. AFAIK, it is sometimes not jarring to see the half-width parenthesis in "full-width" text as in the CJK languages, for instance when there are no characters preceding or following the parenthesized text fragment. By removing the parenthesis from the localizable text, we can share strings with wt-status.c and remove a cautionary comment to translators. Remove the ( from the localizable portion of messages so the sorting happens properly regardless of locale. 2019-05-13wt-status: drop unused status parameterLibravatar Jeff King1-4/+2
The v2_fix_up_changed() function doesn't actually need to see the wt_status struct. It's possible that could change in the future, but this is a static-local function with one caller. 2019-05-07doc: promote "git restore"Libravatar Nguyễn Thái Ngọc Duy1-7/+19
The new command "git restore" (together with "git switch") are added to avoid the confusion of one-command-do-all "git checkout" for new users. They are also helpful to avoid ambiguous context. For these reasons, promote it everywhere possible. This includes documentation, suggestions/advice from other commands. One nice thing about git-restore is the ability to restore "everything", so it can be used in "git status" advice instead of both "git checkout" and "git reset". The three commands suggested by "git status" are add, rm and restore. "git checkout" is also removed from "git help" (i.e. it's no longer considered a commonly used command) Signed-off-by: Nguyễn Thái Ngọc Duy <pclouds@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2019-04-18merge: cleanup messages like commitLibravatar Denton Liu1-3/+9
This change allows git-merge messages to be cleaned up with the commit.cleanup configuration or --cleanup option, just like how git-commit does it. We also give git-pull the option of --cleanup so that it can also take advantage of this change. Finally, add testing to ensure that messages are properly cleaned up. Note that some newlines that were added to the commit message were removed so that if a file were read via -F, it would be copied faithfully. 2019-04-18ref-filter: use correct branch for %(push:track)Libravatar Damien Robert1-2/+2
In ref-filter.c, when processing the atom %(push:track), the ahead/behind values are computed using `stat_tracking_info` which refers to the upstream branch. Fix that by introducing a new flag `for_push` in `stat_tracking_info` in remote.c, which does the same thing but for the push branch. Update the few callers of `stat_tracking_info` to handle this flag. This ensure that whenever we use this function in the future, we are careful to specify is this should apply to the upstream or the push branch. This bug was not detected in t/t6300-for-each-ref.sh because in the test for push:track, both the upstream and the push branches were behind by 1 from the local branch. Change the test so that the upstream branch is behind by 1 while the push branch is ahead by 1. This allows us to test that %(push:track) refers to the correct branch. This changes the expected value of some following tests (by introducing new references), so update them too. 2018-10-03roll wt_status_state into wt_status and populate in the collect phaseLibravatar Stephen P. Smith1-75/+59
Status variables were initialized in the collect phase and some variables were later freed in the print functions. A "struct wt_status" used to be sufficient for the output phase to work. It was designed to be filled in the collect phase and consumed in the output phase, but over time some fields were added and output phase started filling the fields. A "struct wt_status_state" that was used in other codepaths turned out to be useful in the "git status" output. This is not tied to "struct wt_status", so filling in the collect phase was not consistently followed. Move the status state structure variables into the status state structure and populate them in the collect functions. Create a new function to free the buffers that were being freed in the print function. Call this new function in commit.c where both the collect and print functions were being called. 2018-09-07wt-status.c: set the committable flag in the collect phaseLibravatar Stephen P. Smith1-2/+11
In an update to fix a bug with "commit --dry-run" it was found that the committable flag was broken. The update was, at the time, accepted as it was better than the previous version. [1] Since the setting of the committable flag had been done in wt_longstatus_print_updated, move it to wt_status_collect_updated_cb. Set the committable flag in wt_status_collect_changes_initial to keep from introducing a rebase regression. Instead of setting the committable flag in show_merge_in_progress, in wt_status_cllect check for a merge that has not been committed. If present then set the committable flag. Change the tests to expect success since updates to the wt-status broken code section is being fixed. 2018-08-29convert "oidcmp() == 0" to oideq()Libravatar Jeff King1-5/+5
Using the more restrictive oideq() should, in the long run, give the compiler more opportunities to optimize these callsites. For now, this conversion should be a complete noop with respect to the generated code. The result is also perhaps a little more readable, as it avoids the "zero is equal" idiom. Since it's so prevalent in C, I think seasoned programmers tend not to even notice it anymore, but it can sometimes make for awkward double negations (e.g., we can drop a few !!oidcmp() instances here). This patch was generated almost entirely by the included coccinelle patch. This mechanical conversion should be completely safe, because we check explicitly for cases where oidcmp() is compared to 0, which is what oideq() is doing under the hood. Note that we don't have to catch "!oidcmp()" separately; coccinelle's standard isomorphisms make sure the two are treated equivalently. I say "almost" because I did hand-edit the coccinelle output to fix up a few style violations (it mostly keeps the original formatting, but sometimes unwraps long lines). 2018-07-11has_uncommitted_changes(): fall back to empty treeLibravatar Jeff King1-0/+10
If has_uncommitted_changes() can't resolve HEAD (e.g., because it's unborn or corrupt), then we end up calling run_diff_index() with an empty revs.pending array. This causes a segfault, as run_diff_index() blindly looks at the first pending item. Fixing this raises a question of fault: should run_diff_index() handle this case, or is the caller wrong to pass an empty pending list? Looking at the other callers of run_diff_index(), they handle this in one of three ways: - they resolve the object themselves, and avoid doing the diff if it's not valid - they resolve the object themselves, and fall back to the empty tree - they use setup_revisions(), which will die() if the object isn't valid Since this is the only broken caller, that argues that the fix should go there. Falling back to the empty tree makes sense here, as we'd claim uncommitted changes if and only if the index is non-empty. This may be a little funny in the case of corruption (the corrupt HEAD probably _isn't_ empty), but: - we don't actually know the reason here that HEAD didn't resolve (the much more likely case is that we have an unborn HEAD, in which case the empty tree comparison is the right thing) - this matches how other code, like "git diff", behaves While we're thinking about it, let's add an assertion to run_diff_index(). It should always be passed a single object, and as this bug shows, it's easy to get it wrong (and an assertion is easier to hunt down than a segfault, or a quietly ignored extra tree). 2018-05-18path.c: migrate global git_path_* to take a repository argumentLibravatar Stefan Beller1-4/+4
Migrate all git_path_* functions that are defined in path.c to take a repository argument. Unlike other patches in this series, do not use the #define trick, as we rewrite the whole function, which is rather small. This doesn't migrate all the functions, as other builtins have their own local path functions defined using GIT_PATH_FUNC. So keep that macro around to serve the other locations. 2018-05-13add status config and command line options for rename detectionLibravatar Ben Peart1-0/+12
After performing a merge that has conflicts git status will, by default, attempt to detect renames which causes many objects to be examined. In a virtualized repo, those objects do not exist locally so the rename logic triggers them to be fetched from the server. This results in the status call taking hours to complete on very large repos vs seconds with this patch. Add a new config status.renames setting to enable turning off rename detection during status and commit. This setting will default to the value of diff.renames. Add a new config status.renamelimit setting to to enable bounding the time spent finding out inexact renames during status and commit. This setting will default to the value of diff.renamelimit. Add --no-renames command line option to status that enables overriding the config setting from the command line. Add --find-renames[=<n>] command line option to status that enables detecting renames and optionally setting the similarity index. 2018-05-06Replace all die("BUG: ...") calls by BUG() onesLibravatar Johannes Schindelin1-10/+10
In d8193743e08 (usage.c: add BUG() function, 2017-05-12), a new macro was introduced to use for reporting bugs instead of die(). It was then subsequently used to convert one single caller in 588a538ae55 (setup_git_env: convert die("BUG") to BUG(), 2017-05-12). The cover letter of the patch series containing this patch (cf 20170513032414.mfrwabt4hovujde2@sigill.intra.peff.net) is not terribly clear why only one call site was converted, or what the plan is for other, similar calls to die() to report bugs. Let's just convert all remaining ones in one fell swoop. This trick was performed by this invocation: sed -i 's/die("BUG: /BUG("/g' $(git grep -l 'die("BUG' \*.c) Signed-off-by: Johannes Schindelin <johannes.schindelin@gmx.de> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2018-05-06wt-status: use settings from git_diff_ui_configLibravatar Eckhard S. Maaß1-4/+0
If you do something like - git add . - git status - git commit - git show (or git diff HEAD) one would expect to have analogous output from git status and git show (or similar diff-related programs). This is generally not the case, as git status has hard coded values for diff related options. With this commit the hard coded settings are dropped from the status command in favour for values provided by git_diff_ui_config. What follows are some remarks on the concrete options which were hard coded in git status: diffopt.detect_rename Since the very beginning of git status in a3e870f2e2 ("Add "commit" helper script", 2005-05-30), git status always used rename detection, whereas with commands like show and log one had to activate it with a command line option. After 5404c116aa ("diff: activate diff.renames by default", 2016-02-25) the default behaves the same by coincidence, but changing diff.renames to other values can break the consistency between git status and other commands again. With this commit one control the same default behaviour with diff.renames. diffopt.rename_limit Similarly one has the option diff.renamelimit to adjust this limit for all commands but git status. With this commit git status will also honor those. diffopt.break_opt Unlike the other two options this cannot be configured by a configuration option yet. This commit will also change the default behaviour to not use break rewrites. But as rename detection is most likely on, this is dangerous to be activated anyway as one can see here: https://public-inbox.org/git/xmqqegqaahnh.fsf@gitster.dls.corp.google.com/ Signed-off-by: Eckhard S.
