"git fetch" over HTTP walker protocol did not show any progress output. We inherently do not know how much work remains, but still we can show something not to bore users. * rs/show-progress-in-dumb-http-fetch: remote-curl: show progress for fetches over dumb HTTP
2020-03-03remote-curl: show progress for fetches over dumb HTTPLibravatar René Scharfe1-1/+12
Fetching over dumb HTTP transport doesn't show any progress, even with the option --progress. If the connection is slow or there is a lot of data to get then this can take a long time while the user is left to wonder if git got stuck. We don't know the number of objects to fetch at the outset, but we can count the ones we got. Show an open-ended progress indicator based on that number if the user asked for it. 2020-01-30walker_fetch(): avoid raw array length computationLibravatar Jeff King1-1/+3
We compute the length of an array of object_id's with a raw multiplication. In theory this could trigger an integer overflow which would cause an under-allocation (and eventually an out of bounds write). I doubt this can be triggered in practice, since you'd need to feed it an enormous number of target objects, which would typically come from the ref advertisement and be using proportional memory. And even on 64-bit systems, where "int" is much smaller than "size_t", that should hold: even though "targets" is an int, the multiplication will be done as a size_t because of the use of sizeof(). But we can easily fix it by using ALLOC_ARRAY(), which uses st_mult() under the hood. Signed-off-by: Jeff King <peff@peff.net> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2019-06-20object: convert lookup_unknown_object() to use object_idLibravatar Jeff King1-1/+1
There are no callers left of lookup_unknown_object() that aren't just passing us the "hash" member of a "struct object_id". Let's take the whole struct, which gets us closer to removing all raw sha1 variables. It also matches the existing conversions of lookup_blob(), etc. The conversions of callers were done by hand, but they're all mechanical one-liners. 2019-01-15tree-walk: store object_id in a separate memberLibravatar brian m. carlson1-2/+2
When parsing a tree, we read the object ID directly out of the tree buffer. This is normally fine, but such an object ID cannot be used with oidcpy, which copies GIT_MAX_RAWSZ bytes, because if we are using SHA-1, there may not be that many bytes to copy. Instead, store the object ID in a separate struct member. Since we can no longer efficiently compute the path length, store that information as well in struct name_entry. Ensure we only copy the object ID into the new buffer if the path length is nonzero, as some callers will pass us an empty path with no object ID following it, and we will not want to read past the end of the buffer. 2018-05-16object-store: move object access functions to object-store.hLibravatar Stefan Beller1-0/+1
This should make these functions easier to find and cache.h less overwhelming to read. In particular, this moves: - read_object_file - oid_object_info - write_object_file As a result, most of the codebase needs to #include object-store.h. In this patch the #include is only added to files that would fail to compile otherwise. It would be better to #include wherever identifiers from the header are used. 2018-04-24walker: drop fields of `struct walker` which are always 1Libravatar Martin Ågren1-11/+8
After the previous commit, both users of `struct walker` set `get_tree`, `get_history` and `get_all` to 1. Drop those fields and simplify the walker implementation accordingly. Let's hope that any out-of-tree users will not mind this change. They should notice that the compilation fails as they try to set these fields. (If they do not set them, note that `get_http_walker()` leaves them undefined, so the behavior will have been undefined all the time.) 2018-04-11treewide: replace maybe_tree with accessor methodsLibravatar Derrick Stolee1-1/+1
In anticipation of making trees load lazily, create a Coccinelle script (contrib/coccinelle/commit.cocci) to ensure that all references to the 'maybe_tree' member of struct commit are either mutations or accesses through get_commit_tree() or get_commit_tree_oid(). 2018-04-11treewide: rename tree to maybe_treeLibravatar Derrick Stolee1-1/+1
Using the commit-graph file to walk commit history removes the large cost of parsing commits during the walk. This exposes a performance issue: lookup_tree() takes a large portion of the computation time, even when Git never uses those trees. In anticipation of lazy-loading these trees, rename the 'tree' member of struct commit to 'maybe_tree'. This serves two purposes: it hints at the future role of possibly being NULL even if the commit has a valid tree, and it allows for unambiguous transformation from simple member access (i.e. commit->maybe_tree) to method access. 2017-05-08Convert lookup_commit* to struct object_idLibravatar brian m. carlson1-1/+1
Convert lookup_commit, lookup_commit_or_die, lookup_commit_reference, and lookup_commit_reference_gently to take struct object_id arguments. Introduce a temporary in parse_object buffer in order to convert this function. This is required since in order to convert parse_object and parse_object_buffer, lookup_commit_reference_gently and lookup_commit_or_die would need to be converted. Not introducing a temporary would therefore require that lookup_commit_or_die take a struct object_id *, but lookup_commit would take unsigned char *, leaving a confusing and hard-to-use interface. parse_object_buffer will lose this temporary in a later patch. This commit was created with manual changes to commit.c, commit.h, and object.c, plus the following semantic patch: @@ expression E1, E2; @@ - lookup_commit_reference_gently(E1.hash, E2) + lookup_commit_reference_gently(&E1, E2) @@ expression E1, E2; @@ - lookup_commit_reference_gently(E1->hash, E2) + lookup_commit_reference_gently(E1, E2) @@ expression E1; @@ - lookup_commit_reference(E1.hash) + lookup_commit_reference(&E1) @@ expression E1; @@ - lookup_commit_reference(E1->hash) + lookup_commit_reference(E1) @@ expression E1; @@ - lookup_commit(E1.hash) + lookup_commit(&E1) @@ expression E1; @@ - lookup_commit(E1->hash) + lookup_commit(E1) @@ expression E1, E2; @@ - lookup_commit_or_die(E1.hash, E2) + lookup_commit_or_die(&E1, E2) @@ expression E1, E2; @@ - lookup_commit_or_die(E1->hash, E2) + lookup_commit_or_die(E1, E2) Signed-off-by: brian m. carlson <sandals@crustytoothpaste.net> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2016-07-08walker: let walker_say take arbitrary formatsLibravatar Jeff King1-3/+7
We take a printf-style format and a single "char *" parameter, and the format must therefore have at most one "%s" in it. Besides being error-prone (and tickling -Wformat-nonliteral), this is unnecessarily restrictive. We can just provide the usual varargs interface. 2016-01-15strbuf: introduce strbuf_getline_{lf,nul}()Libravatar Junio C Hamano1-1/+1
The strbuf_getline() interface allows a byte other than LF or NUL as the line terminator, but this is only because I wrote these codepaths anticipating that there might be a value other than NUL and LF that could be useful when I introduced line_termination long time ago. No useful caller that uses other value has emerged. By now, it is clear that the interface is overly broad without a good reason. Many codepaths have hardcoded preference to read either LF terminated or NUL terminated records from their input, and then call strbuf_getline() with LF or NUL as the third parameter. This step introduces two thin wrappers around strbuf_getline(), namely, strbuf_getline_lf() and strbuf_getline_nul(), and mechanically rewrites these call sites to call either one of them. The changes contained in this patch are: * introduction of these two functions in strbuf.[ch] * mechanical conversion of all callers to strbuf_getline() with either '\n' or '\0' as the third parameter to instead call the respective thin wrapper. After this step, output from "git grep 'strbuf_getline('" would become a lot smaller. An interim goal of this series is to make this an empty set, so that we can have strbuf_getline_crlf() take over the shorter name strbuf_getline(). Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>

2015-10-05drop strcpy in favor of raw sha1_to_hexLibravatar Jeff King1-3/+2
In some cases where we strcpy() the result of sha1_to_hex(), there's no need; the result goes directly into a printf statement, and we can simply pass the return value from sha1_to_hex() directly. When this code was originally written, sha1_to_hex used a single buffer, and it was not safe to use it twice within a single expression. 2015-05-25each_ref_fn: change to take an object_id parameterLibravatar Michael Haggerty1-1/+4
Change typedef each_ref_fn to take a "const struct object_id *oid" parameter instead of "const unsigned char *sha1". To aid this transition, implement an adapter that can be used to wrap old-style functions matching the old typedef, which is now called "each_ref_sha1_fn"), and make such functions callable via the new interface. This requires the old function and its cb_data to be wrapped in a "struct each_ref_fn_sha1_adapter", and that object to be used as the cb_data for an adapter function, each_ref_fn_adapter(). This is an enormous diff, but most of it consists of simple, mechanical changes to the sites that call any of the "for_each_ref" family of functions. Subsequent to this change, the call sites can be rewritten one by one to use the new interface. 2014-06-19walker_fetch: fix minor memory leakLibravatar Jeff King1-9/+9
We sometimes allocate "msg" on the heap, but will fail to free it if we hit the failure code path. We can instead keep a separate variable that is safe to be freed no matter how we get to the failure code path. While we're here, we can also do two readability improvements: 1. Use xstrfmt instead of a manual malloc/sprintf 2. Due to the "maybe we allocate msg, maybe we don't" strategy, the logic for deciding which message to show was split into two parts. Since the deallocation is now pushed onto a separate variable, this is no longer a concern, and we can keep all of the logic in the same place. 2013-06-06clear parsed flag when we free tree buffersLibravatar Jeff King1-4/+1
Many code paths will free a tree object's buffer and set it to NULL after finishing with it in order to keep memory usage down during a traversal. However, out of 8 sites that do this, only one actually unsets the "parsed" flag back. Those sites that don't are setting a trap for later users of the tree object; even after calling parse_tree, the buffer will remain NULL, causing potential segfaults. It is not known whether this is triggerable in the current code. Most commands do not do an in-memory traversal followed by actually using the objects again. However, it does not hurt to be safe for future callers. In most cases, we can abstract this out to a "free_tree_buffer" helper. However, there are two exceptions: 1. The fsck code relies on the parsed flag to know that we were able to parse the object at one point. We can switch this to using a flag in the "flags" field. 2. The index-pack code sets the buffer to NULL but does not free it (it is freed by a caller). We should still unset the parsed flag here, but we cannot use our helper, as we do not want to free the buffer. Change check_ref_format() to take a flags argument that indicates what is acceptable in the reference name (analogous to "git check-ref-format"'s "--allow-onelevel" and "--refspec-pattern"). This is more convenient for callers and also fixes a failure in the test suite (and likely elsewhere in the code) by enabling "onelevel" and "refspec-pattern" to be allowed independently of each other. Also rename check_ref_format() to check_refname_format() to make it obvious that it deals with refnames rather than references themselves. 2010-11-29commit: Add commit_list prefix in two function names.Libravatar Thiago Farina1-1/+1
Add commit_list prefix to insert_by_date function and to sort_by_date, so it's clear that these functions refer to commit_list structure. Signed-off-by: Thiago Farina <tfransosi@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>

2008-10-18make alloc_ref_from_str() the new alloc_ref()Libravatar René Scharfe1-1/+1
With all calls to alloc_ref() gone, we can remove it and then we're free to give alloc_ref_from_str() the shorter name. It's a much nicer interface, as the callers always need to have a name string when they allocate a ref anyway and don't need to calculate and pass its length+1 any more. 2008-10-12Replace calls to strbuf_init(&foo, 0) with STRBUF_INIT initializerLibravatar Brandon Casey1-2/+1
Many call sites use strbuf_init(&foo, 0) to initialize local strbuf variable "foo" which has not been accessed since its declaration. These can be replaced with a static initialization using the STRBUF_INIT macro which is just as readable, saves a function call, and takes up fewer lines.
