Excluding t7817, which is added in an unrelated patch series at the time
of writing, this adjusts t7[5-9]*. This trick was performed via
$ (cd t &&
sed -i -e 's/master/main/g' -e 's/MASTER/MAIN/g' \
-e 's/Master/Main/g' -- t7[5-9]*.sh)
This allows us to define `GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME=main`
for those tests.

In addition to the manual adjustment to let the `linux-gcc` CI job run
the test suite with `master` and then with `main`, this patch makes sure
that GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME is set in all test scripts
that currently rely on the initial branch name being `master by default.
To determine which test scripts to mark up, the first step was to
force-set the default branch name to `master` in
- all test scripts that contain the keyword `master`,
- t4211, which expects `t/t4211/history.export` with a hard-coded ref to
initialize the default branch,
- t5560 because it sources `t/t556x_common` which uses `master`,
- t8002 and t8012 because both source `t/annotate-tests.sh` which also
uses `master`)
This trick was performed by this command:
$ sed -i '/^ *\. \.\/\(test-lib\|lib-\(bash\|cvs\|git-svn\)\|gitweb-lib\)\.sh$/i\
GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME=master\
export GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME\
' $(git grep -l master t/t[0-9]*.sh) \
t/t4211*.sh t/t5560*.sh t/t8002*.sh t/t8012*.sh
After that, careful, manual inspection revealed that some of the test
scripts containing the needle `master` do not actually rely on a
specific default branch name: either they mention `master` only in a
comment, or they initialize that branch specificially, or they do not
actually refer to the current default branch. Therefore, the
aforementioned modification was undone in those test scripts thusly:
$ git checkout HEAD -- \
t/t0027-auto-crlf.sh t/t0060-path-utils.sh \
t/t1011-read-tree-sparse-checkout.sh \
t/t1305-config-include.sh t/t1309-early-config.sh \
t/t1402-check-ref-format.sh t/t1450-fsck.sh \
t/t2024-checkout-dwim.sh \
t/t2106-update-index-assume-unchanged.sh \
t/t3040-subprojects-basic.sh t/t3301-notes.sh \
t/t3308-notes-merge.sh t/t3423-rebase-reword.sh \
t/t3436-rebase-more-options.sh \
t/t4015-diff-whitespace.sh t/t4257-am-interactive.sh \
t/t5323-pack-redundant.sh t/t5401-update-hooks.sh \
t/t5511-refspec.sh t/t5526-fetch-submodules.sh \
t/t5529-push-errors.sh t/t5530-upload-pack-error.sh \
t/t5548-push-porcelain.sh \
t/t5552-skipping-fetch-negotiator.sh \
t/t5572-pull-submodule.sh t/t5608-clone-2gb.sh \
t/t5614-clone-submodules-shallow.sh \
t/t7508-status.sh t/t7606-merge-custom.sh \
t/t9302-fast-import-unpack-limit.sh
We excluded one set of test scripts in these commands, though: the range
of `git p4` tests. The reason? `git p4` stores the (foreign) remote
branch in the branch called `p4/master`, which is obviously not the
default branch. Manual analysis revealed that only five of these tests
actually require a specific default branch name to pass; They were
modified thusly:
$ sed -i '/^ *\. \.\/lib-git-p4\.sh$/i\
GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME=master\
export GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME\
' t/t980[0167]*.sh t/t9811*.sh

If the user runs git log while rewording a commit it is confusing if
sometimes we're amending the commit that's being reworded and at other
times we're creating a new commit depending on whether we could
fast-forward or not[1]. Fix this inconsistency by always committing the
picked commit and then running 'git commit --amend' to do the reword.
The first commit is performed by the sequencer without forking git
commit and does not impact on the speed of rebase. In a test rewording
100 commits with
GIT_EDITOR=true GIT_SEQUENCE_EDITOR='sed -i s/pick/reword/' \
../bin-wrappers/git rebase -i --root
and taking the best of three runs the current master took
957ms and with this patch it took 961ms.
This change fixes rewording the new root commit when rearranging commits
with --root.
Note that the new code no longer updates CHERRY_PICK_HEAD after creating
a root commit - I'm not sure why the old code was that creating that ref
after a successful commit, everywhere else it is removed after a
successful commit.

If GIT_SEQUENCE_EDITOR is set then rebase runs it when executing
implicit interactive rebases which are supposed to appear
non-interactive to the user. Fix this by setting GIT_SEQUENCE_EDITOR=:
rather than GIT_EDITOR=:. A couple of tests relied on the old behavior
so they are updated to work with the new regime.

The `--preserve-merges` mode of the `rebase` command is slated to be
deprecated soon, as the more powerful `--rebase-merges` mode is
available now, and the latter was designed with the express intent to
address the shortcomings of `--preserve-merges`' design (e.g. the
inability to reorder commits in an interactive rebase).
As such, we will eventually even remove the `--preserve-merges` support,
and along with it, its tests.
In preparation for this, and also to allow the Windows phase of our
automated tests to save some well-needed time when running the test
suite, this commit introduces a new prerequisite REBASE_P, which can be
forced to being unmet by setting the environment variable
`GIT_TEST_SKIP_REBASE_P` to any non-empty string.

Commit 356ee4659b ("sequencer: try to commit without forking 'git
commit'", 2017-11-24) forgot to run the 'prepare-commit-msg' hook when
creating the commit. Fix this by writing the commit message to a
different file and running the hook. Using a different file means that
if the commit is cancelled the original message file is
unchanged. Also move the checks for an empty commit so the order
matches 'git commit'.

Check that cherry-pick and rebase call the 'prepare-commit-msg' hook
correctly. The expected values for the hook arguments are taken to
match the current master branch. I think there is scope for improving
the arguments passed so they make a bit more sense - for instance
cherry-pick currently passes different arguments depending on whether
the commit message is being edited. Also the arguments for rebase
could be improved. Commit 7c4188360ac ("rebase -i: proper
prepare-commit-msg hook argument when squashing", 2008-10-3) apparently
changed things so that when squashing rebase would pass 'squash' as
the argument to the hook but that has been lost.
I think that it would make more sense to pass 'message' for revert and
cherry-pick -x/-s (i.e. cases where there is a new message or the
current message in modified by the command), 'squash' when squashing
with a new message and 'commit HEAD/CHERRY_PICK_HEAD'
otherwise (picking and squashing without a new message).

substitution
The Git CodingGuidelines prefer the $(...) construct for command
substitution instead of using the backquotes `...`.
The backquoted form is the traditional method for command
substitution, and is supported by POSIX. However, all but the
simplest uses become complicated quickly. In particular, embedded
command substitutions and/or the use of double quotes require
careful escaping with the backslash character.
The patch was generated by:
for _f in $(find . -name "*.sh")
do
perl -i -pe 'BEGIN{undef $/;} s/`(.+?)`/\$(\1)/smg' "${_f}"
done
and then carefully proof-read.

65969d4 (merge: honor prepare-commit-msg hook, 2011-02-14) tried to
make "git commit" and "git merge" consistent, because a merge that
required user assistance has to be concluded with "git commit", but
back then only "git commit" triggered prepare-commit-msg hook.
When it added a call to run the prepare-commit-msg hook, however, it
forgot to check the exit code from the hook like "git commit" does,
and ended up replacing one inconsistency with another.
When prepare-commit-msg hook that is run from "git merge" exits with
a non-zero status, abort the commit.

When a merge is stopped due to conflicts or --no-commit, the
subsequent commit calls the prepare-commit-msg hook. However,
it is not called after a clean merge. Fix this inconsistency
by invoking the hook after clean merges as well.

This fixes the remainder of the issues where the test script itself is at
fault for failing when the git checkout path contains whitespace or other
shell metacharacters.
The majority of git svn tests used the idiom
test_expect_success "title" "test script using $svnrepo"
These were changed to have the test script in single-quotes:
test_expect_success "title" 'test script using "$svnrepo"'
which unfortunately makes the patch appear larger than it really is.
One consequence of this change is that in the verbose test output the
value of $svnrepo (and in some cases other variables, too) is no
longer expanded, i.e. previously we saw
* expecting success:
test script using /path/to/git/t/trash/svnrepo
but now it is:
* expecting success:
test script using "$svnrepo"

The prepare-commit-msg hook is run whenever a "fresh" commit message
is prepared, just before it is shown in the editor (if it is).
Its purpose is to modify the commit message in-place.
It takes one to three parameters. The first is the name of the file that
the commit log message. The second is the source of the commit message,
and can be: "message" (if a -m or -F option was given); "template" (if a
-t option was given or the configuration option commit.template is set);
"merge" (if the commit is a merge or a .git/MERGE_MSG file exists);
"squash" (if a .git/SQUASH_MSG file exists); or "commit", followed by
a commit SHA1 as the third parameter (if a -c, -C or --amend option
was given).
If its exit status is non-zero, git-commit will abort. The hook is
not suppressed by the --no-verify option, so it should not be used
as a replacement for the pre-commit hook.
The sample prepare-commit-msg comments out the `Conflicts:` part of
a merge's commit message; other examples are commented out, including
adding a Signed-off-by line at the bottom of the commit messsage,
that the user can then edit or discard altogether.
