Get rid of "GETTEXT_POISON" support altogether, which may or may

As noted in previous commits we are removing the use of
GIT_TEST_GETTEXT_POISON=false. These tests all relied on the facility
being off, it always is off after an earlier change, but we hadn't
removed the redundant assignments to "false" in the tests.
I'm preserving the deletion of "error" lines in 38b9197a76a (t5411:
add basic test cases for proc-receive hook, 2020-08-27), it turns out
that's useful even without GIT_TEST_GETTEXT_POISON=true in
play. Update a comment added in that commit to note that.

Carefully excluding t7064, which sees independent development elsewhere
at the time of writing, we use `main` as the default branch name in
t7[0-4]*. This trick was performed via
$ (cd t &&
sed -i -e 's/master/main/g' -e 's/MASTER/MAIN/g' \
-e 's/Master/Main/g' -- t7[0-4]*.sh &&
git checkout HEAD -- t7064\*)
This allows us to define `GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME=main`
for those tests.

In addition to the manual adjustment to let the `linux-gcc` CI job run
the test suite with `master` and then with `main`, this patch makes sure
that GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME is set in all test scripts
that currently rely on the initial branch name being `master by default.
To determine which test scripts to mark up, the first step was to
force-set the default branch name to `master` in
- all test scripts that contain the keyword `master`,
- t4211, which expects `t/t4211/history.export` with a hard-coded ref to
initialize the default branch,
- t5560 because it sources `t/t556x_common` which uses `master`,
- t8002 and t8012 because both source `t/annotate-tests.sh` which also
uses `master`)
This trick was performed by this command:
$ sed -i '/^ *\. \.\/\(test-lib\|lib-\(bash\|cvs\|git-svn\)\|gitweb-lib\)\.sh$/i\
GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME=master\
export GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME\
' $(git grep -l master t/t[0-9]*.sh) \
t/t4211*.sh t/t5560*.sh t/t8002*.sh t/t8012*.sh
After that, careful, manual inspection revealed that some of the test
scripts containing the needle `master` do not actually rely on a
specific default branch name: either they mention `master` only in a
comment, or they initialize that branch specificially, or they do not
actually refer to the current default branch. Therefore, the
aforementioned modification was undone in those test scripts thusly:
$ git checkout HEAD -- \
t/t0027-auto-crlf.sh t/t0060-path-utils.sh \
t/t1011-read-tree-sparse-checkout.sh \

t/t7508-status.sh t/t7606-merge-custom.sh \
t/t9302-fast-import-unpack-limit.sh
We excluded one set of test scripts in these commands, though: the range
of `git p4` tests. The reason? `git p4` stores the (foreign) remote
branch in the branch called `p4/master`, which is obviously not the
default branch. Manual analysis revealed that only five of these tests
actually require a specific default branch name to pass; They were
modified thusly:
$ sed -i '/^ *\. \.\/lib-git-p4\.sh$/i\
GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME=master\
export GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME\
' t/t980[0167]*.sh t/t9811*.sh

Change the GIT_TEST_GETTEXT_POISON variable from being "non-empty?" to
being a more standard boolean variable.
Since it needed to be checked in both C code and shellscript (via test
-n) it was one of the remaining shellscript-like variables. Now that
we have "env--helper" we can change that.
There's a couple of tricky edge cases that arise because we're using
git_env_bool() early, and the config-reading "env--helper".
If GIT_TEST_GETTEXT_POISON is set to an invalid value die_bad_number()
will die, but to do so it would usually call gettext(). Let's detect
the special case of GIT_TEST_GETTEXT_POISON and always emit that
message in the C locale, lest we infinitely loop.
As seen in the updated tests in t0017-env-helper.sh there's also a
caveat related to "env--helper" needing to read the config for trace2
purposes.
Since the C_LOCALE_OUTPUT prerequisite is lazy and relies on
"env--helper" we could get invalid results if we failed to read the
config (e.g. because we'd loop on includes) when combined with
e.g. "test_i18ngrep" wanting to check with "env--helper" if
GIT_TEST_GETTEXT_POISON was true or not.
I'm crossing my fingers and hoping that a test similar to the one I
removed in the earlier "config tests: simplify include cycle test"
change in this series won't happen again, and testing for this
explicitly in "env--helper"'s own tests.
This change breaks existing uses of
e.g. GIT_TEST_GETTEXT_POISON=YesPlease, which we've documented in
po/README and other places. As noted in [1] we might want to consider
also accepting "YesPlease" in "env--helper" as a special-case.
But as the lack of uproar over 6cdccfce1e ("i18n: make GETTEXT_POISON
a runtime option", 2018-11-08) demonstrates the audience for this
option is a really narrow set of git developers, who shouldn't have
much trouble modifying their test scripts, so I think it's better to
deal with that minor headache now and make all the relevant GIT_TEST_*
variables boolean in the same way than carry the "YesPlease"
special-case forward.

When --merge is specified, we may need to do a real merge (instead of
three-way tree unpacking), the steps are best seen in git-checkout.sh
version before it's removed:
# Match the index to the working tree, and do a three-way.
git diff-files --name-only | git update-index --remove --stdin &&
work=`git write-tree` &&
git read-tree $v --reset -u $new || exit
git merge-recursive $old -- $new $work
# Do not register the cleanly merged paths in the index yet.
# this is not a real merge before committing, but just carrying
# the working tree changes along.
unmerged=`git ls-files -u`
git read-tree $v --reset $new
case "$unmerged" in
'') ;;
*)
(
z40=0000000000000000000000000000000000000000
echo "$unmerged" |
sed -e 's/^[0-7]* [0-9a-f]* /'"0 $z40 /"
echo "$unmerged"
) | git update-index --index-info
;;
esac
Notice the last 'read-tree --reset' step. We restore worktree back to
'new' tree after worktree's messed up by merge-recursive. If there are
staged changes before this whole command sequence is executed, they
are lost because they are unlikely part of the 'new' tree to be
restored.
There is no easy way to fix this. Elijah may have something up his
sleeves [1], but until then, check if there are staged changes and
refuse to run and lose them. The user would need to do "git reset" to
continue in this case.
A note about the test update. 'checkout -m' in that test will fail
because a deletion is staged. This 'checkout -m' was previously needed
to verify quietness behavior of unpack-trees. But a different check
has been put in place in the last patch. We can safely drop
'checkout -m' now.

read-tree is basically the front end of unpack-trees code and shoud
expose all of its functionality (unless it's designed for internal
use). This "opts.quiet" (formerly "opts.gently") was added for
builtin/checkout.c but there is no reason why other read-tree users
won't find this useful.
The test that is updated to run 'read-tree --quiet' was added because
unpack-trees was accidentally not being quiet [1] in 6a143aa2b2
(checkout -m: attempt merge when deletion of path was staged -
2014-08-12). Because checkout is the only "opts.quiet" user, there was
no other way to test quiet behavior. But we can now test it directly.
6a143aa2b2 was manually reverted to verify that read-tree --quiet
works correctly (i.e. test_must_be_empty fails).

Change the GETTEXT_POISON compile-time + runtime GIT_GETTEXT_POISON
test parameter to only be a GIT_TEST_GETTEXT_POISON=<non-empty?>
runtime parameter, to be consistent with other parameters documented
in "Running tests with special setups" in t/README.
When I added GETTEXT_POISON in bb946bba76 ("i18n: add GETTEXT_POISON
to simulate unfriendly translator", 2011-02-22) I was concerned with
ensuring that the _() function would get constant folded if NO_GETTEXT
was defined, and likewise that GETTEXT_POISON would be compiled out
unless it was defined.
But as the benchmark in my [1] shows doing a one-off runtime
getenv("GIT_TEST_[...]") is trivial, and since GETTEXT_POISON was
originally added the GIT_TEST_* env variables have become the common
idiom for turning on special test setups.
So change GETTEXT_POISON to work the same way. Now the
GETTEXT_POISON=YesPlease compile-time option is gone, and running the
tests with GIT_TEST_GETTEXT_POISON=[YesPlease|] can be toggled on/off
without recompiling.
This allows for conditionally amending tests to test with/without
poison, similar to what 859fdc0c3c ("commit-graph: define
GIT_TEST_COMMIT_GRAPH", 2018-08-29) did for GIT_TEST_COMMIT_GRAPH. Do
some of that, now we e.g. always run the t0205-gettext-poison.sh test.
I did enough there to remove the GETTEXT_POISON prerequisite, but its
inverse C_LOCALE_OUTPUT is still around, and surely some tests using
it can be converted to e.g. always set GIT_TEST_GETTEXT_POISON=.
Notes on the implementation:
* We still compile a dedicated GETTEXT_POISON build in Travis
CI. Perhaps this should be revisited and integrated into the
"linux-gcc" build, see ae59a4e44f ("travis: run tests with
GIT_TEST_SPLIT_INDEX", 2018-01-07) for prior art in that area. Then
again maybe not, see [2].
* We now skip a test in t0000-basic.sh under
GIT_TEST_GETTEXT_POISON=YesPlease that wasn't skipped before. This
test relies on C locale output, but due to an edge case in how the
previous implementation of GETTEXT_POISON worked (reading it from
GIT-BUILD-OPTIONS) wasn't enabling poison correctly. Now it does,
and needs to be skipped.
* The getenv() function is not reentrant, so out of paranoia about
code of the form:
printf(_("%s"), getenv("some-env"));
call use_gettext_poison() in our early setup in git_setup_gettext()
so we populate the "poison_requested" variable in a codepath that's
won't suffer from that race condition.
* We error out in the Makefile if you're still saying
GETTEXT_POISON=YesPlease to prompt users to change their
invocation.
* We should not print out poisoned messages during the test
initialization itself to keep it more readable, so the test library
hides the variable if set in $GIT_TEST_GETTEXT_POISON_ORIG during
setup. See [3].
See also [4] for more on the motivation behind this patch, and the
history of the GETTEXT_POISON facility.

Test fixes.
* sg/test-must-be-empty:
tests: use 'test_must_be_empty' instead of 'test_cmp <empty> <out>'
tests: use 'test_must_be_empty' instead of 'test_cmp /dev/null <out>'
tests: use 'test_must_be_empty' instead of 'test ! -s'
tests: use 'test_must_be_empty' instead of '! test -s'
|
|
Using 'test_must_be_empty' is shorter and more idiomatic than
>empty &&
test_cmp empty out
as it saves the creation of an empty file. Furthermore, sometimes the
expected empty file doesn't have such a descriptive name like 'empty',
and its creation is far away from the place where it's finally used
for comparison (e.g. in 't7600-merge.sh', where two expected empty
files are created in the 'setup' test, but are used only about 500
lines later).
These cases were found by instrumenting 'test_cmp' to error out the
test script when it's used to compare empty files, and then converted
manually.
Note that even after this patch there still remain a lot of cases
where we use 'test_cmp' to check empty files:
- Sometimes the expected output is not hard-coded in the test, but
'test_cmp' is used to ensure that two similar git commands produce
the same output, and that output happens to be empty, e.g. the
test 'submodule update --merge - ignores --merge for new
submodules' in 't7406-submodule-update.sh'.
- Repetitive common tasks, including preparing the expected results
and running 'test_cmp', are often extracted into a helper
function, and some of this helper's callsites expect no output.
- For the same reason as above, the whole 'test_expect_success'
block is within a helper function, e.g. in 't3070-wildmatch.sh'.
- Or 'test_cmp' is invoked in a loop, e.g. the test 'cvs update
(-p)' in 't9400-git-cvsserver-server.sh'.

Using 'test_must_be_empty' is preferable to '! test -s', because it
gives a helpful error message if the given file is unexpectedly not
empty, while the latter remains completely silent. Furthermore, it
also catches cases when the given file unexpectedly does not exist at
all.
This patch was basically created by:
sed -i -e 's/! test -s/test_must_be_empty/' t[0-9]*.sh
with the following notable exceptions:
- The '! test -s' check in '.gitmodules ignore=dirty suppresses
submodules with untracked content' in 't7508-status.sh' is left
as-is, because it's bogus and, therefore, it's subject of a
dedicated patch.
- The '! test -s' checks in 't9131-git-svn-empty-symlink.sh' and
't9135-git-svn-moved-branch-empty-file.sh' are immediately
preceeded by a 'test -f' to ensure that the files exist in the
first place. 'test_must_be_empty' ensures that as well, so those
'test -f' commands are removed as well.

This test employs a for-loop inside a subshell and correctly aborts the
loop and fails the test overall (via "exit 1") if any iteration of the
for-loop fails. Otherwise, it exits the subshell with an explicit but
entirely unnecessary "exit 0", presumably to indicate that all
iterations of the loop succeeded. The &&-chain is broken between the
for-loop and the "exit 0". Rather than fixing the &&-chain, just drop
the pointless "exit 0".

Many tests are very focused on the file system representation of the
loose and packed refs code. As there are plans to implement other
ref storage systems, let's migrate these tests to a form that test
the intent of the refs storage system instead of it internals.
This will make clear to readers that these tests do not depend on
which ref backend is used.
The internals of the loose refs backend are still tested in
t1400-update-ref.sh, whereas the tests changed in this patch focus
on testing other aspects.
This patch just takes care of many low hanging fruits. It does not
try to completely solves the issue.

One of these breakages is in setup, but one is more severe
and may miss a real test failure. These are pulled out from
the rest, though, because we also clean up a few other
anachronisms. The most interesting is the use of this
here-doc construct:
(cat >... <<EOF
...
EOF
) &&
It looks like an attempt to make the &&-chaining more
natural by letting it come at the end of the here-doc. But
the extra sub-shell is so non-idiomatic (plus the lack of
"<<-") that it ends up confusing.
Since these are just using a single line, we can accomplish
the same thing with a single printf (which also makes the
use of tab more obvious than the verbatim whitespace).

Many tests have an initial setup step that might fail based
on whether earlier tests in the script have succeeded or
not. Using a trick like "|| true" breaks the &&-chain,
missing earlier failures (and fooling --chain-lint).
We can use test_might_fail in some cases, which is correct
and makes the intent more obvious. We can also use
test_unconfig for unsetting config (and which is more
robust, as well).
The case in t9500 is an oddball. It wants to run cmd1 _or_
cmd2, and does it like:
cmd1 || cmd2 &&
other_stuff
It's not wrong in this case, but it's a bad habit to get
into, because it breaks the &&-chain if used anywhere except
at the beginning of the test (and we use the correct
solution here, putting it inside a block for precedence).

When creating a new branch using the --track option, we must make sure that
we don't try to set an upstream that does not make sense to follow (using
'git pull') or update (using 'git push'). The current code checks against
using HEAD as upstream (since tracking a symref doesn't make sense). However,
tracking a tag doesn't make sense either. Indeed, tracking _any_ ref that is
not a (local or remote) branch doesn't make sense, and should be disallowed.
This patch achieves this by checking that the ref we're trying to --track
resides within refs/heads/* or refs/remotes/*. This new check replaces the
previous check against HEAD.
A couple of testcases are also added, verifying that we cannot create
branches with tags as upstreams.
Finally, some selftests relying on using a non-branch as an upstream have
been reworked or removed:
- t6040: Reverse the meaning of two tests that depend on the ability to
use (lightweight and annotated) tags as upstreams. These two tests were
originally added in commits 1be570f and 57ffc5f, and this patch reverts the
intention of those two commits.
- t7201: Remove part of a test (introduced in 9188ed8) relying on a
non-branch as upstream.

git checkout --merge --conflict=diff3 can be used to present conflict
hunks including text from the common ancestor. The added information
is helpful for resolving a merge by hand, and merge tools tend to
understand it because it is very similar to what ‘diff3 -m’ produces.
Unlike current git, diff3 -m includes a label for the merge base on
the ||||||| line, and unfortunately, some tools cannot parse the
conflict hunks without it. Humans can benefit from a cue when
learning to interpreting the format, too. Mark the start of the text
from the old branch with a label based on the branch’s name.
git rerere does not have trouble parsing this output and its preimage
ids are unchanged since it includes its own code for recreating
conflict hunks. No other code in git tries to parse conflict hunks.

git checkout --conflict=diff3 can be used to present conflicts hunks
including text from the common ancestor:
<<<<<<< ours
ourside
|||||||
original
=======
theirside
>>>>>>> theirs
The added information is helpful for resolving a merge by hand, and
merge tools can usually understand it without trouble because it looks
like output from ‘diff3 -m’.
diff3 includes a label for the merge base on the ||||||| line, and it
seems some tools (for example, Emacs 22’s smerge-mode) cannot parse
conflict hunks without such a label. Humans could use help in
interpreting the output, too. So change the marker for the start of the
text from the common ancestor to include the label “base”.
git rerere’s conflict identifiers are not affected: to parse conflict
hunks, rerere looks for whitespace after the ||||||| marker rather
than a newline, and to compute preimage ids, rerere has its own code
for creating conflict hunks. No other code in git tries to parse
conflict hunks.

The old "advice" message explained how to create a branch after going into
a detached HEAD state but didn't make it clear why the user may want to do
so. Also "moving to ... which isn't a local branch" was unclear if it is
complaining, if it is describing the new state, or if it is explaining why
the HEAD is detached (the true reason is the last one).
Give the established phrase 'detached HEAD' first to make it easy for
users to look up the concept in documentation, and briefly describe what
can be done in the state (i.e. play around without having to clean up)
before telling the user how to keep what was done during the temporary
state.
Allow the long description to be hidden by setting advice.detachedHead
configuration to false.
We might want to customize the advice depending on how the commit to check
out was spelled (e.g. instead of "new-branch-name", we way want to say
"topic" when "git checkout origin/topic" triggered this message) in later
updates, but this encapsulates that into a separate function and it should
be a good first step.

We should tell ll_merge() that the 3-way merge between stages #2 and #3 is
an outermost merge, not a virtual-ancestor creation.
Back when this code was originally written, users couldn't write custom
merge drivers easily, so the bug didn't matter, but these days it does.

Most of the time when we give branch name in the message, we quote it
inside a pair of single-quotes. git-checkout uses double-quotes; this

The test to make sure that checkout fails when --track was asked for and
we cannot set up tracking information in t7201 was wrong, and it turns out
that the implementation for that feature itself was buggy. This fixes it.

If you fail to update refs to change branches in checkout, your index

creation of a new branch fail. These checks were in the shell version,

The messages are from the shell version, and should probably be made nicer.
