2008-09-08t6023-merge-file: Work around non-portable sed usageLibravatar Arjen Laarhoven1-2/+2
OS X sed doesn't understand '\n' on the right side of a substitution. Use a valid substitution character instead and use 'tr' to convert those to a newline. Signed-off-by: Arjen Laarhoven <arjen@yaph.org> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2008-08-30merge.conflictstyle: choose between "merge" and "diff3 -m" stylesLibravatar Junio C Hamano1-1/+8
This teaches "git merge-file" to honor merge.conflictstyle configuration variable, whose value can be "merge" (default) or "diff3". Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2008-08-30xdiff-merge: optionally show conflicts in "diff3 -m" styleLibravatar Junio C Hamano1-0/+37
When showing conflicting merges, we traditionally followed RCS's merge output format. The output shows: <<<<<<< postimage from one side; ======= postimage of the other side; and >>>>>>> Some poeple find it easier to be able to understand what is going on when they can view the common ancestor's version, which is used by "diff3 -m", which shows: <<<<<<< postimage from one side; ||||||| shared preimage; ======= postimage of the other side; and >>>>>>> This is an initial step to bring that as an optional feature to git. Only "git merge-file" has been converted, with "--diff3" option. Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2008-08-17tests: use $TEST_DIRECTORY to refer to the t/ directoryLibravatar Junio C Hamano1-1/+1
Many test scripts assumed that they will start in a 'trash' subdirectory that is a single level down from the t/ directory, and referred to their test vector files by asking for files like "../t9999/expect". This will break if we move the 'trash' subdirectory elsewhere. To solve this, we earlier introduced "$TEST_DIRECTORY" so that they can refer to t/ directory reliably. This finally makes all the tests use it to refer to the outside environment. With this patch, and a one-liner not included here (because it would contradict with what Dscho really wants to do): | diff --git a/t/test-lib.sh b/t/test-lib.sh | index 70ea7e0..60e69e4 100644 | --- a/t/test-lib.sh | +++ b/t/test-lib.sh | @@ -485,7 +485,7 @@ fi | . ../GIT-BUILD-OPTIONS | | # Test repository | -test="trash directory" | +test="trash directory/another level/yet another" | rm -fr "$test" || { | trap - exit | echo >&5 "FATAL: Cannot prepare test area" all the tests still pass, but we would want extra sets of eyeballs on this type of change to really make sure. 2008-07-13t/: Use "test_must_fail git" instead of "! git"Libravatar Stephan Beyer1-6/+8
This patch changes every occurrence of "! git" -- with the meaning that a git call has to gracefully fail -- into "test_must_fail git". This is useful to - make sure the test does not fail because of a signal, e.g. SIGSEGV, and - advertise the use of "test_must_fail" for new tests. 2008-05-24tests: do not use implicit "git diff --no-index"Libravatar Junio C Hamano1-4/+4
As a general principle, we should not use "git diff" to validate the results of what git command that is being tested has done. We would not know if we are testing the command in question, or locating a bug in the cute hack of "git diff --no-index". Rather use test_cmp for that purpose. 2008-02-18xdl_merge(): introduce XDL_MERGE_ZEALOUS_ALNUMLibravatar Johannes Schindelin1-0/+10
When a merge conflicts, there are often common lines that are not really common, such as empty lines or lines containing a single curly bracket. With XDL_MERGE_ZEALOUS_ALNUM, we use the following heuristics: when a hunk does not contain any letters or digits, it is treated as conflicting. In other words, a conflict which used to look like this: <<<<<<< a = 1; ======= output(); >>>>>>> } } } <<<<<<< output(); ======= b = 1; >>>>>>> will look like this with ZEALOUS_ALNUM: <<<<<<< a = 1; } } } output(); ======= output(); } } } b = 1; >>>>>>> To demonstrate this, git-merge-file has been switched from XDL_MERGE_ZEALOUS to XDL_MERGE_ZEALOUS_ALNUM. 2008-02-18xdl_merge(): make XDL_MERGE_ZEALOUS output simplerLibravatar Johannes Schindelin1-0/+10
When a merge conflicts, there are often less than three common lines between two conflicting regions. Since a conflict takes up as many lines as are conflicting, plus three lines for the commit markers, the output will be shorter (and thus, simpler) in this case, if the common lines will be merged into the conflicting regions. This patch merges up to three common lines into the conflicts. For example, what looked like this before this patch: <<<<<<< if (a == 1) ======= if (a != 0) >>>>>>> { int i; <<<<<<< a = 0; ======= a = !a; >>>>>>> will now look like this: <<<<<<< if (a == 1) { int i; a = 0; ======= if (a != 0) { int i; a = !a; >>>>>>> Suggested Linus (based on ideas by "Voltage Spike" -- if that name is real, it is mighty cool). 2008-02-01Sane use of test_expect_failureLibravatar Junio C Hamano1-6/+6
Originally, test_expect_failure was designed to be the opposite of test_expect_success, but this was a bad decision. Most tests run a series of commands that leads to the single command that needs to be tested, like this: test_expect_{success,failure} 'test title' ' setup1 && setup2 && setup3 && what is to be tested ' And expecting a failure exit from the whole sequence misses the point of writing tests. Your setup$N that are supposed to succeed may have failed without even reaching what you are trying to test. The only valid use of test_expect_failure is to check a trivial single command that is expected to fail, which is a minority in tests of Porcelain-ish commands. This large-ish patch rewrites all uses of test_expect_failure to use test_expect_success and rewrites the condition of what is tested, like this: test_expect_success 'test title' ' setup1 && setup2 && setup3 && ! this command should fail ' test_expect_failure is redefined to serve as a reminder that that test *should* succeed but due to a known breakage in git it currently does not pass. So if git-foo command should create a file 'bar' but you discovered a bug that it doesn't, you can write a test like this: test_expect_failure 'git-foo should create bar' ' rm -f bar && git foo && test -f bar ' This construct acts similar to test_expect_success, but instead of reporting "ok/FAIL" like test_expect_success does, the outcome is reported as "FIXED/still broken". 2007-07-02Rewrite "git-frotz" to "git frotz"Libravatar Junio C Hamano1-5/+5

2007-06-07War on whitespaceLibravatar Junio C Hamano1-1/+0
This uses "git-apply --whitespace=strip" to fix whitespace errors that have crept in to our source files over time. There are a few files that need to have trailing whitespaces (most notably, test vectors). The results still passes the test, and build result in Documentation/ area is unchanged. 2007-03-04Get rid of the dependency to GNU diff in the testsLibravatar Johannes Schindelin1-4/+4
Now that "git diff" handles stdin and relative paths outside the working tree correctly, we can convert all instances of "diff -u" to "git diff". This commit is really the result of $ perl -pi.bak -e 's/diff -u/git diff/' $(git grep -l "diff -u" t/) Signed-off-by: Johannes Schindelin <johannes.schindelin@gmx.de> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <junkio@cox.net> (cherry picked from commit c699a40d68215c7e44a5b26117a35c8a56fbd387)
2007-01-15Replace "echo -n" with printf in shell scripts.Libravatar Jason Riedy1-1/+1
Not all echos know -n. This was causing a test failure in t5401-update-hooks.sh, but not t3800-mktag.sh for some reason. Signed-off-by: Jason Riedy <ejr@cs.berkeley.edu> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <junkio@cox.net>
2006-12-28xdl_merge(): fix a segmentation fault when refining conflictsLibravatar Johannes Schindelin1-0/+22
The function xdl_refine_conflicts() tries to break down huge conflicts by doing a diff on the conflicting regions. However, this does not make sense when one side is empty. Worse, when one side is not only empty, but after EOF, the code accessed unmapped memory. Noticed by Luben Tuikov, Shawn Pearce and Alexandre Julliard, the latter providing a test case. 2006-12-06Add builtin merge-file, a minimal replacement for RCS mergeLibravatar Johannes Schindelin1-0/+116
merge-file has the same syntax as RCS merge, but supports only the "-L" option. For good measure, a test is added, which is quite minimal, though.
