2020-11-19tests: mark tests relying on the current default for `init.defaultBranch`Libravatar Johannes Schindelin1-0/+3
In addition to the manual adjustment to let the `linux-gcc` CI job run the test suite with `master` and then with `main`, this patch makes sure that GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME is set in all test scripts that currently rely on the initial branch name being `master by default. To determine which test scripts to mark up, the first step was to force-set the default branch name to `master` in - all test scripts that contain the keyword `master`, - t4211, which expects `t/t4211/history.export` with a hard-coded ref to initialize the default branch, - t5560 because it sources `t/t556x_common` which uses `master`, - t8002 and t8012 because both source `t/annotate-tests.sh` which also uses `master`) This trick was performed by this command: $ sed -i '/^ *\. \.\/\(test-lib\|lib-\(bash\|cvs\|git-svn\)\|gitweb-lib\)\.sh$/i\ GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME=master\ export GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME\ ' $(git grep -l master t/t[0-9]*.sh) \ t/t4211*.sh t/t5560*.sh t/t8002*.sh t/t8012*.sh After that, careful, manual inspection revealed that some of the test scripts containing the needle `master` do not actually rely on a specific default branch name: either they mention `master` only in a comment, or they initialize that branch specificially, or they do not actually refer to the current default branch. The reason? `git p4` stores the (foreign) remote branch in the branch called `p4/master`, which is obviously not the default branch. 2020-09-17maintenance: use pointers to check --autoLibravatar Derrick Stolee1-1/+1
The 'git maintenance run' command has an '--auto' option. This is used by other Git commands such as 'git commit' or 'git fetch' to check if maintenance should be run after adding data to the repository. Previously, this --auto option was only used to add the argument to the 'git gc' command as part of the 'gc' task. We will be expanding the other tasks to perform a check to see if they should do work as part of the --auto flag, when they are enabled by config. First, update the 'gc' task to perform the auto check inside the maintenance process. This prevents running an extra 'git gc --auto' command when not needed. It also shows a model for other tasks. Second, use the 'auto_condition' function pointer as a signal for whether we enable the maintenance task under '--auto'. For instance, we do not want to enable the 'fetch' task in '--auto' mode, so that function pointer will remain NULL. Now that we are not automatically calling 'git gc', a test in t5514-fetch-multiple.sh must be changed to watch for 'git maintenance' instead. We continue to pass the '--auto' option to the 'git gc' command when necessary, because of the gc.autoDetach config option changes behavior. Likely, we will want to absorb the daemonizing behavior implied by gc.autoDetach as a maintenance.autoDetach config option. 2019-10-06fetch: let --jobs=<n> parallelize --multiple, tooLibravatar Johannes Schindelin1-0/+11
So far, `--jobs=<n>` only parallelizes submodule fetches/clones, not `--multiple` fetches, which is unintuitive, given that the option's name does not say anything about submodules in particular. Let's change that. With this patch, also fetches from multiple remotes are parallelized. For backwards-compatibility (and to prepare for a use case where submodule and multiple-remote fetches may need different parallelization limits), the config setting `submodule.fetchJobs` still only controls the submodule part of `git fetch`, while the newly-introduced setting `fetch.parallel` controls both (but can be overridden for submodules with `submodule.fetchJobs`). 2019-06-19fetch: only run 'gc' once when fetching multiple remotesLibravatar Nguyễn Thái Ngọc Duy1-2/+5
In multiple remotes mode, git-fetch is launched for n-1 remotes and the last remote is handled by the current process. Each of these processes will in turn run 'gc' at the end. This is not really a problem because even if multiple 'gc --auto' is run at the same time we still handle it correctly. It does show multiple "auto packing in the background" messages though. And we may waste some resources when gc actually runs because we still do some stuff before checking the lock and moving it to background. So let's try to avoid that. We should only need one 'gc' run after all objects and references are added anyway. Add a new option --no-auto-gc that will be used by those n-1 processes. 'gc --auto' will always run on the main fetch process (*). (*) even if we fetch remotes in parallel at some point in future, this should still be fine because we should "join" all those processes before this step. 2015-03-25t: fix some trivial cases of ignored exit codes in loopsLibravatar Jeff King1-2/+2
These are all cases where we do a setup step of the form: for i in $foo; do set_up $i || break done && more_setup would not notice a failure in set_up (because break always returns a 0 exit code). These are just setup steps that we do not expect to fail, but it does not hurt to be defensive. Most can be fixed by converting the "break" to a "return 1" (since we eval our tests inside a function for just this purpose). A few of the loops are inside subshells, so we can use just "exit 1" to break out of the subshell. And a few can actually be made shorter by just unrolling the loop. Add the --multiple option to specify that all arguments are either groups or remotes. The primary reason for adding this option is to allow us to re-implement 'git remote update' using fetch. It would have been nice if this option was not needed, but since the colon in a refspec is optional, it is in general not possible to know whether a single, colon-less argument is a remote or a refspec. 'git remote' is meant for managing remotes and 'git fetch' is meant for actually fetching data from remote repositories. Therefore, it is not logical that you must use 'git remote update' to fetch from more than one repository at once. Add the --all option to 'git fetch', to tell it to attempt to fetch from all remotes. Also, if --all is not given, the <repository> argument is allowed to be the name of a group, to allow fetching from all repositories in the group. Other options except -v and -q are silently ignored.
