Since 8cbeba0632 (tests: define GIT_TEST_PROTOCOL_VERSION,
2019-02-25), it has been possible to run tests with a newer protocol
version by setting the GIT_TEST_PROTOCOL_VERSION envvar to a version
number. Tests that assume protocol v0 handle this by explicitly
setting
GIT_TEST_PROTOCOL_VERSION=
or similar constructs like 'test -z "$GIT_TEST_PROTOCOL_VERSION" ||
return 0' to declare that they only handle the default (v0) protocol.
The emphasis there is a bit off: it would be clearer to specify
GIT_TEST_PROTOCOL_VERSION=0 to inform the reader that these tests are
specifically testing and relying on details of protocol v0. Do so.
This way, a reader does not need to know what the default protocol
version is, and the tests can continue to work when the default
protocol version used by Git advances past v0.

Define a GIT_TEST_PROTOCOL_VERSION environment variable meant to be used
from tests. When set, this ensures protocol.version is at least the
given value, allowing the entire test suite to be run as if this
configuration is in place for all repositories.
As of this patch, all tests pass whether GIT_TEST_PROTOCOL_VERSION is
unset or set to 0. Some tests fail when GIT_TEST_PROTOCOL_VERSION is set
to 1 or 2, but this will be dealt with in subsequent patches.
This is based on work by Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason.

These tests manually coerce the exit code of invoked commands to
"success" when they don't care if the command succeeds or fails since
failure of those commands should not cause the test to fail overall.
In doing so, they intentionally break the &&-chain. Modernize by
replacing manual exit code management with test_might_fail() and a
normal &&-chain.

One test in t5400 examines the packet exchange between git-push and
git-receive-pack. The latter inherits the GIT_TRACE_PACKET environment
variable, so that both processes dump trace data into the same file
concurrently. This should not be a problem because the trace file is
opened with O_APPEND.
On Windows, however, O_APPEND is not atomic as it should be: it is
emulated as lseek(SEEK_END) followed by write(). For this reason, the
test is unreliable: it can happen that one process overwrites a line
that was just written by the other process. As a consequence, the test
sometimes does not find one or another line that is expected (and it is
also successful occasionally).
The test case is actually only interested in the output of git-push.
To ensure that only git-push writes to the trace file, override the
receive-pack command such that it does not even open the trace file.

We de-duplicate ".have" refs among themselves, but never
check if they are duplicates of our local refs. It's not
unreasonable that they would be if we are a "--shared" or
"--reference" clone of a similar repository; we'd have all
the same tags.
We can handle this by inserting our local refs into the
oidset, but obviously not suppressing duplicates (since the
refnames are important).
Note that this also switches the order in which we advertise
refs, processing ours first and then any alternates. The
order shouldn't matter (and arguably showing our refs first
makes more sense).

When using git send-pack with --all option
and a target repository specification ([<host>:]<directory>),
usage message is being displayed instead of performing
the actual transmission.
The reason for this issue is that destination and refspecs are being set
in the same conditional and are populated from argv. When a target
repository is passed, refspecs is being populated as well with its value.
This makes the check for refspecs not being NULL to always return true,
which, in conjunction with the check for --all or --mirror options,
is always true as well and returns usage message instead of proceeding.
This ensures that send-pack will stop execution only when --all
or --mirror switch is used in conjunction with any refspecs passed.

The standard output channel of receive-pack is a structured protocol
channel, and subprocesses must never be allowed to leak anything
into it by writing to their standard output.
Use RUN_COMMAND_STDOUT_TO_STDERR option to run_command_v_opt() just
like we do when running hooks to prevent output from "gc" leaking to
the standard output.

When receive-pack triggers 'git gc --auto' and 'git prune' is called to
remove a stale temporary object, 'git prune' prints an informational
message to stdout about the file that it will remove. Since this message
is written to stdout, it is sent back over the transport channel to the git
client which tries to interpret it as part of the pack protocol and then
promptly terminates with a complaint about a protocol error.
Introduce a test which exercises the auto-gc functionality of receive-pack
and demonstrates this breakage.

This makes git-push refuse pushing into a non-bare repository to update
the current branch by default. To help people who are used to be able to
do this (and later "reset --hard" it in some other way), an error message
is issued when this refusal is triggered, instructing how to resurrect the
old behaviour.
Hosting sites that do not give the users direct access to customize their
repositories (e.g. repo.or.cz, gitorious, github etc.) may further want to
explicitly set the configuration variable to "refuse" for their customers'
repositories.

This is a companion patch to the recent 3d95d92 (receive-pack: explain
what to do when push updates the current branch, 2009-01-31).
Deleting the current branch from a remote will result in the next clone
from it not check out anything, among other things. It also is one of the
cause that makes remotes/origin/HEAD a dangling symbolic ref. This patch
still allows the traditional behaviour but with a big warning, and promises
that the default will change to 'refuse' in a future release.

Many tests checked for failure by hand without using test_must_fail (they
probably predate the shell function).
When we know the desired outcome, explicitly check for it, instead of
checking if the result does not match one possible incorrect outcome.
E.g. if you expect a push to be refused, you do not test if the result is
different from what was pushed. Instead, make sure that the ref did not
before and after the push.
The test sequence chdir'ed around and any failure at one point could have
started the next test in an unexpected directory. Fix this problem by
using subshells as necessary.

Occasionally, it may be useful to prevent branches from getting deleted from
a centralized repository, particularly when no administrative access to the
server is available to undo it via reflog. It also makes
receive.denyNonFastForwards more useful if it is used for access control
since it prevents force-updating by deleting and re-creating a ref.

As a general principle, we should not use "git diff" to validate the
results of what git command that is being tested has done. We would not
know if we are testing the command in question, or locating a bug in the
cute hack of "git diff --no-index".
Rather use test_cmp for that purpose.

System V versions of grep (such as Solaris /usr/bin/grep)
don't understand either of these options. git's usage of
"grep -e pattern" fell into one of two categories:
1. equivalent to "grep pattern". -e is only useful here if
the pattern begins with a "-", but all of the patterns
are hardcoded and do not begin with a dash.
2. stripping comments and blank lines with
grep -v -e "^$" -e "^#"
We can fortunately do this in the affirmative as
grep '^[^#]'
Uses of "-q" can be replaced with redirection to /dev/null.
In many tests, however, "grep -q" is used as "if this string
is in the expected output, we are OK". In this case, it is
fine to just remove the "-q" entirely; it simply makes the
"verbose" mode of the test slightly more verbose.

I discovered we did not send an ng line in the report-status feedback
if the ref was not updated because the repository has the config
option receive.denyNonFastForwards enabled. I think the reason this
happened is that it is simply too easy to forget to set error_string
when returning back a failure from update()
We now return an ng line for a non-fastforward update, which in
turn will cause send-pack to exit with a non-zero exit status.
Hence the modified test.
This refactoring changes update to return a const char* describing
the error, which execute_commands always loads into error_string.
The result is what I think is cleaner code, and allows us to
initialize the error_string member to NULL when we read_head_info.
I want error_string to be NULL in all commands before we call
execute_commands, so that we can reuse the run_hook function to
execute a new pre-receive hook.

This reverts commit 9b088c4e394df84232cfd37aea78349a495b09c1.
Protecting 'mature' objects does not make it any safer. We should
admit that git-prune is inherently unsafe when run in parallel with
other operations without involving unwarranted locking overhead,
and with the latest git, even rebase and reset would not immediately
create crufts anyway.

This allows you to say
git send-pack $URL :refs/heads/$branch
to delete the named remote branch. The refspec $src:$dst means
replace the destination ref with the object known as $src on the
local side, so this is a natural extension to make an empty $src
mean "No object" to delete the target.

This adds the counterpart of git-update-ref that lets you read
and create "symbolic refs". By default it uses a symbolic link
to represent ".git/HEAD -> refs/heads/master", but it can be compiled
to use the textfile symbolic ref.
The places that did 'readlink .git/HEAD' and 'ln -s refs/heads/blah
.git/HEAD' have been converted to use new git-symbolic-ref command, so
that they can deal with either implementation.

As promised, this is the "big tool rename" patch. The primary differences
since 0.99.6 are:
(1) git-*-script are no more. The commands installed do not
have any such suffix so users do not have to remember if
something is implemented as a shell script or not.
(2) Many command names with 'cache' in them are renamed with
'index' if that is what they mean.
There are backward compatibility symblic links so that you and
Porcelains can keep using the old names, but the backward
compatibility support is expected to be removed in the near
future.

I have noticed that "make test" fails without any explanations when the
"merge" utility is missing. I don't think tests should be silent in
case of failure.
It turned out that the particular test was using "exit" to interrupt the
test in case of an error. This caused the whole test script to exit.
No further tests would be run even if "--immediate" wasn't specified.
No error message was printed.
This patch does following:
All instances of "exit", "exit 1" and "(exit 1)" in tests have been
replaced with "return 1". In fact, "(exit 1)" had no effect.
File descriptor 5 is duplicated from file descriptor 1. This is needed
to print important error messages from tests.
New function test_run_() has been introduced. Any "return" in the test
would merely cause that function to return without skipping calls to
test_failure_() and test_ok_(). The new function also traps "exit" and
treats it like a fatal error (in case somebody reintroduces "exit" in
the tests).
test_expect_failure() and test_expect_success() check both the result of
eval and the return value of test_run_(). If the later is not 0, it's
always a failure because it indicates the the test didn't complete.
