"index-pack --strict" has been taught to make sure that it runs the
final object integrity checks after making the freshly indexed
packfile available to itself.
* jk/index-pack-maint:
index-pack: correct install_packed_git() args
index-pack: handle --strict checks of non-repo packs
prepare_commit_graft: treat non-repository as a noop
|
|
The parse_commit_buffer() function consults lookup_commit_graft()
to see if we need to rewrite parents. The latter will look
at $GIT_DIR/info/grafts. If you're outside of a repository,
then this will trigger a BUG() as of b1ef400eec (setup_git_env:
avoid blind fall-back to ".git", 2016-10-20).
It's probably uncommon to actually parse a commit outside of
a repository, but you can see it in action with:
cd /not/a/git/repo
git index-pack --strict /some/file.pack
This works fine without --strict, but the fsck checks will
try to parse any commits, triggering the BUG(). We can fix
that by teaching the graft code to behave as if there are no
grafts when we aren't in a repository.
Arguably index-pack (and fsck) are wrong to consider grafts
at all. So another solution is to disable grafts entirely
for those commands. But given that the graft feature is
deprecated anyway, it's not worth even thinking through the
ramifications that might have.
There is one other corner case I considered here. What
should:
cd /not/a/git/repo
export GIT_GRAFT_FILE=/file/with/grafts
git index-pack --strict /some/file.pack
do? We don't have a repository, but the user has pointed us
directly at a graft file, which we could respect. I believe
this case did work that way prior to b1ef400eec. However,
fixing it now would be pretty invasive. Back then we would
just call into setup_git_env() even without a repository.
But these days it actually takes a git_dir argument. So
there would be a fair bit of refactoring of the setup code
involved.
Given the obscurity of this case, plus the fact that grafts
are deprecated and probably shouldn't work under index-pack
anyway, it's not worth pursuing further. This patch at least
un-breaks the common case where you're _not_ using grafts,
but we BUG() anyway trying to even find that out.

Many tests hardcode the raw object names, which would change once
we migrate away from SHA-1. While some of them must test against
exact object names, most of them do not have to use hardcoded
constants in the test. The latter kind of tests have been updated
to test the moral equivalent of the original without hardcoding the
actual object names.

Instead of using 8 bytes (on 64 bit arch) to store a pointer to a
pack. Use an index instead since the number of packs should be
relatively small.
This limits the number of packs we can handle to 1k. Since we can't be
sure people can never run into the situation where they have more than
1k pack files. Provide a fall back route for it.
If we find out they have too many packs, the new in_pack_by_idx[]
array (which has at most 1k elements) will not be used. Instead we
allocate in_pack[] array that holds nr_objects elements. This is
similar to how the optional in_pack_pos field is handled.
The new simple test is just to make sure the too-many-packs code path
is at least executed. The true test is running
make test GIT_TEST_FULL_IN_PACK_ARRAY=1
to take advantage of other special case tests.

Fix a buggy warning about threads under NO_PTHREADS=YesPlease. Due to
re-using the delta_search_threads variable for both the state of the
"pack.threads" config & the --threads option, setting "pack.threads"
but not supplying --threads would trigger the warning for both
"pack.threads" & --threads.
Solve this bug by resetting the delta_search_threads variable in
git_pack_config(), it might then be set by --threads again and be
subsequently warned about, as the test I'm changing here asserts.

Add a test for the warning that's emitted when --threads or
pack.threads is provided under NO_PTHREADS=YesPlease. This uses the
new PTHREADS prerequisite.
The assertion for C_LOCALE_OUTPUT in the latter test is currently
redundant, since unlike index-pack the pack-objects warnings aren't
i18n'd. However they might be changed to be i18n'd in the future, and
there's no harm in future-proofing the test.
There's an existing bug in the implementation of pack-objects which
this test currently tests for as-is. Details about the bug & the fix
are included in a follow-up change.

The index-pack builtin is marked as RUN_SETUP_GENTLY,
because it's perfectly fine to index a pack in the
filesystem outside of any repository. However, --stdin mode
will write the result to the object database, which does not
make sense outside of a repository. Doing so creates a bogus
".git" directory with nothing in it except the newly-created
pack and its index.
Instead, let's flag this as an error and abort.

"git index-pack --keep[=<msg>] pack-$name.pack" simply did not work.
* jc/maint-index-pack-keep:
index-pack: correct --keep[=<msg>]
|
|
When 592ce208 (index-pack: use strip_suffix to avoid magic numbers,
2014-06-30) refactored the code to derive names of .idx and .keep
files from the name of .pack file, a copy-and-paste typo crept in,
mistakingly attempting to create and store the keep message file in
the .idx file we just created, instead of .keep file.
As we create the .keep file with O_CREAT|O_EXCL, and we do so after
we write the .idx file, we luckily do not clobber the .idx file, but
because we deliberately ignored EEXIST when creating .keep file
(which is justifiable because only the existence of .keep file
matters), nobody noticed this mistake so far.

The Git CodingGuidelines prefer the $(...) construct for command
substitution instead of using the backquotes `...`.
The backquoted form is the traditional method for command
substitution, and is supported by POSIX. However, all but the
simplest uses become complicated quickly. In particular, embedded
command substitutions and/or the use of double quotes require
careful escaping with the backslash character.
The patch was generated by:
for _f in $(find . -name "*.sh")
do
perl -i -pe 'BEGIN{undef $/;} s/`(.+?)`/\$(\1)/smg' "${_f}"
done
and then carefully proof-read.

* jk/wrap-perl-used-in-tests:
t: use perl instead of "$PERL_PATH" where applicable
t: provide a perl() function which uses $PERL_PATH
|
|
As of the last commit, we can use "perl" instead of
"$PERL_PATH" when running tests, as the former is now a
function which uses the latter. As the shorter "perl" is
easier on the eyes, let's switch to using it everywhere.
This is not quite a mechanical s/$PERL_PATH/perl/
replacement, though. There are some places where we invoke
perl from a script we generate on the fly, and those scripts
do not have access to our internal shell functions. The
result can be double-checked by running:
ln -s /bin/false bin-wrappers/perl
make test
which continues to pass even after this patch.

GIT-BUILD-OPTIONS defines PERL_PATH to be used in the test suite. Only a
few tests already actually use this variable when perl is needed. The
other test just call 'perl' and it might happen that the wrong perl
interpreter is used.
This becomes problematic on Windows, when the perl interpreter that is
compiled and installed on the Windows system is used, because this perl
interpreter might introduce some unexpected LF->CRLF conversions.
This patch makes sure that $PERL_PATH is used everywhere in the test suite
and that the correct perl interpreter is used.

This reverts most of commit a2430dde8ceaaaabf05937438249397b883ca77a.

small number of objects. However with many objects and a small pack size
limit, the time required to complete the repack tends towards O(n^2),

The value passed to --max-pack-size used to count in MiB which was
inconsistent with the corresponding configuration variable as well as
other command arguments which are defined to count in bytes with an
optional unit suffix. This brings --max-pack-size in line with the
rest of Git.
Also, in order not to cause havoc with people used to the previous
megabyte scale, and because this is a sane thing to do anyway, a
minimum size of 1 MiB is enforced to avoid an explosion of pack files.

First of all, trying to run 'git verify-pack' on packs produced by
the tests using pack.packSizeLimit always failed. After lots of digging
and head scratching, it turns out that the preceeding test simulating
a SHA1 collision did leave the repository quite confused, impacting
subsequent tests.
So let's move that destructive test last, and add tests to run
verify-pack on the output from those packSizeLimit tests to catch such
goofage.
Finally, group those packSizeLimit tests together.

We do not have /dev/zero on Windows. This replaces it by data generated
with printf, perl, or echo. Most of the cases do not depend on that the
data is a stream of zero bytes, so we use something printable; nor is an
unlimited stream of data needed, so we produce only as many bytes as the
test cases need.

* jc/maint-1.6.0-pack-directory:
Make sure objects/pack exists before creating a new pack
|
|
In a repository created with git older than f49fb35 (git-init-db: create
"pack" subdirectory under objects, 2005-06-27), objects/pack/ directory is
not created upon initialization. It was Ok because subdirectories are
created as needed inside directories init-db creates, and back then,
packfiles were recent invention.
After the said commit, new codepaths started relying on the presense of
objects/pack/ directory in the repository. This was exacerbated with
8b4eb6b (Do not perform cross-directory renames when creating packs,
2008-09-22) that moved the location temporary pack files are created from
objects/ directory to objects/pack/ directory, because moving temporary to
the final location was done carefully with lazy leading directory creation.
Many packfile related operations in such an old repository can fail
mysteriously because of this.
This commit introduces two helper functions to make things work better.
- odb_mkstemp() is a specialized version of mkstemp() to refactor the
code and teach it to create leading directories as needed;
- odb_pack_keep() refactors the code to create a ".keep" file while
create leading directories as needed.

"git pack-objects" has the option --max-pack-size to limit the file
size of the packs to a certain amount of bytes. On platforms where
the pack file size is limited by filesystem constraints, it is easy
to forget this option, and this option does not exist for "git gc"
to begin with.
So introduce a config variable to set the default maximum, but make
this overrideable by the command line.

Originally, test_expect_failure was designed to be the opposite
of test_expect_success, but this was a bad decision. Most tests
run a series of commands that leads to the single command that
needs to be tested, like this:
test_expect_{success,failure} 'test title' '
setup1 &&
setup2 &&
setup3 &&
what is to be tested
'
And expecting a failure exit from the whole sequence misses the
point of writing tests. Your setup$N that are supposed to
succeed may have failed without even reaching what you are
trying to test. The only valid use of test_expect_failure is to
check a trivial single command that is expected to fail, which
is a minority in tests of Porcelain-ish commands.
This large-ish patch rewrites all uses of test_expect_failure to
use test_expect_success and rewrites the condition of what is
tested, like this:
test_expect_success 'test title' '
setup1 &&
setup2 &&
setup3 &&
! this command should fail
'
test_expect_failure is redefined to serve as a reminder that
that test *should* succeed but due to a known breakage in git it
currently does not pass. So if git-foo command should create a
file 'bar' but you discovered a bug that it doesn't, you can
write a test like this:
test_expect_failure 'git-foo should create bar' '
rm -f bar &&
git foo &&
test -f bar
'
This construct acts similar to test_expect_success, but instead
of reporting "ok/FAIL" like test_expect_success does, the
outcome is reported as "FIXED/still broken".
