2021-12-22Merge branch 'jz/apply-quiet-and-allow-empty'Libravatar Junio C Hamano1-4/+18
"git apply" has been taught to ignore a message without a patch with the "--allow-empty" option. It also learned to honor the "--quiet" option given from the command line. * jz/apply-quiet-and-allow-empty: git-apply: add --allow-empty flag git-apply: add --quiet flag
2021-12-13git-apply: add --allow-empty flagLibravatar Jerry Zhang1-4/+18
Some users or scripts will pipe "git diff" output to "git apply" when replaying diffs or commits. In these cases, they will rely on the return value of "git apply" to know whether the diff was applied successfully. However, for empty commits, "git apply" will fail. This complicates scripts since they have to either buffer the diff and check its length, or run diff again with "exit-code", essentially doing the diff twice. Add the "--allow-empty" flag to "git apply" which allows it to handle both empty diffs and empty commits created by "git format-patch --always" by doing nothing and returning 0. Add tests for both with and without --allow-empty. Signed-off-by: Jerry Zhang <jerry@skydio.com> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2021-12-13tests: use test_write_lines() to generate line-oriented outputLibravatar Eric Sunshine1-4/+1
Take advantage of test_write_lines() to generate line-oriented output rather than using for-loops or a series of `echo` commands. Not only is test_write_lines() a natural fit for such a task, but there is less opportunity for a broken &&-chain. 2021-11-01leak tests: mark some apply tests as passing with SANITIZE=leakLibravatar Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason1-0/+2
Mark some tests that match "*apply*" as passing when git is compiled with SANITIZE=leak. They'll now be listed as running under the "GIT_TEST_PASSING_SANITIZE_LEAK=true" test mode (the "linux-leaks" CI target). 2008-06-13t4126: fix test that happened to work due to timingLibravatar Junio C Hamano1-4/+0
The test did "reset --hard" (where the HEAD commit has an empty blob at path "empty") followed by "> empty", expecting that the index does not notice the file _changed_ since git wrote it out upon "reset" if the redirection is done quickly enough. There was no need to do the emptying, and it gave a wrong result if "reset --hard" happened on time T and then ">empty" happened on the next second T+1. This fixes it. 2008-05-17builtin-apply: do not declare patch is creation when we do not know itLibravatar Junio C Hamano1-0/+61
When we see no context nor deleted line in the patch, we used to declare that the patch creates a new file. But some people create an empty file and then apply a patch to it. Similarly, a patch that delete everything is not a deletion patch either. This commit corrects these two issues. Together with the previous commit, it allows a diff between an empty file and a line-ful file to be treated as both creation patch and "add stuff to an existing empty file", depending on the context. A new test t4126 demonstrates the fix. Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
