Some submodule tests do some setup outside of a test_expect
block. This is bad because we won't actually check the
outcome of those commands. But it's doubly so because "git
add submodule" now produces a warning to stderr, which is
not suppressed by the test scripts in non-verbose mode.
This patch does the minimal to fix the annoying warnings.
All three of these scripts could use more cleanup of related
setup.

These are tests which are missing a link in their &&-chain,
but during a setup phase. We may fail to notice failure in
commands that build the test environment, but these are
typically not expected to fail at all (but it's still good
to double-check that our test environment is what we
expect).

These are tests which are missing a link in their &&-chain,
but in a way that probably does not effect the outcome of
the test. Most of these are of the form:
some_cmd >actual
test_cmp expect actual
The main point of the test is to verify the output, and a
failure in some_cmd would probably be noticed by bogus
output. But it is good for the tests to also confirm that
"some_cmd" does not die unexpectedly after producing its
output.

git commit -m with some iso8859-1 encoded stuff is doomed to fail in MinGW,
because Windows don't let you pass encoded bytes to a process (CreateProcessW
always takes a UTF-16LE encoded string).
It is safe to pass the iso8859-1 message using a file or a pipe.

The tested encoding is always available in a variable. Use it instead of
hardcoding. Also, to be in line with other tests use ISO8859-1
(uppercase) rather then iso8859-1.

Both "iso8859-1" and "iso-8859-1" are understood as latin-1 by
modern platforms, but the latter is not understood by older
platforms;update tests to use the former.
This is in line with 3994e8a9 (t4201: use ISO8859-1 rather than
ISO-8859-1, 2009-12-03), which did the same.

One can set an alias
$ git config [--global] alias.lg "log --graph --pretty=format:'%Cred%h%Creset
-%C(yellow)%d%Creset %s %Cgreen(%cd) %C(bold blue)<%an>%Creset'
--abbrev-commit --date=local"
to see the log as a pretty tree (like *gitk* but in a terminal).
However, log messages written in an encoding i18n.commitEncoding which differs
from terminal encoding are shown corrupted even when i18n.logOutputEncoding
and terminal encoding are the same (e.g. log messages committed on a Cygwin box
with Windows-1251 encoding seen on a Linux box with a UTF-8 encoding and vice versa).
To simplify an example we can say the following two commands are expected
to give the same output to a terminal:
$ git log --oneline --no-color
$ git log --pretty=format:'%h %s'
However, the former pays attention to i18n.logOutputEncoding
configuration, while the latter does not when it formats "%s".
The same corruption is true for
$ git diff --submodule=log
and
$ git rev-list --pretty=format:%s HEAD
and
$ git reset --hard
This patch makes pretty --format honor logOutputEncoding when it formats
log message.

- Enclose tests in single quotes as opposed to double quotes. This is
the prevalent style in other tests.
- Remove the unused variable $head4_full.
- Indent the expected output so that it lines up with the rest of the
test text.

`git rev-list --max-count=1 HEAD` is a roundabout way of saying `git
rev-parse --verify HEAD`; replace a bunch of instances of the former
with the latter. Also, don't unnecessarily `cut -c1-7` the rev-parse
output when the `--short` option is available.

Once upon a time the builtin_diff function used one color, and the color
variables were called "set" and "reset". Nowadays it is a much longer
function and we use several colors (e.g., "add", "del"). Rename "set" to
"meta" to show that it is the color for showing diff meta-info (it still
does not indicate that it is a "color", but at least it matches the
scheme of the other color variables).

Format the subshells introduced by the previous patch (Several tests:
cd inside subshell instead of around, 2010-09-06) like so:
(
cd subdir &&
...
) &&
This is generally easier to read and has the nice side-effect that
this patch will show what commands are used in the subshell, making
it easier to check for lost environment variables and similar
behavior changes.

directory and back via "cd .." to a cd inside a subshell.
Found these places with "git grep -w "cd \.\.".

The tests used a mixture of 'echo -n' (which is non-portable) and either
test_cmp or diff to check if a file is empty. The much easier and portable
method to check for an empty file is '! test -s'

In some use cases it is not desirable that the diff family considers
submodules that only contain untracked content as dirty. This may happen
e.g. when the submodule is not under the developers control and not all
build generated files have been added to .gitignore by the upstream
developers. Using the "untracked" parameter for the "--ignore-submodules"
option disables checking for untracked content and lets git diff report
them as changed only when they have new commits or modified content.
Sometimes it is not wanted to have submodules show up as changed when they
just contain changes to their work tree. An example for that are scripts
which just want to check for submodule commits while ignoring any changes
to the work tree. Also users having large submodules known not to change
might want to use this option, as the - sometimes substantial - time it
takes to scan the submodule work tree(s) is saved.
