2020-11-19t34*: adjust the references to the default branch name "main"Libravatar Johannes Schindelin1-13/+13
Carefully excluding t3404, which sees independent development elsewhere at the time of writing, we use `main` as the default branch name in t34*. This trick was performed via $ (cd t && sed -i -e 's/master/main/g' -e 's/MASTER/MAIN/g' \ -e 's/Master/Main/g' -- t34*.sh && git checkout HEAD -- t34\*) This allows us to define `GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME=main` for those tests. 2020-11-19tests: mark tests relying on the current default for `init.defaultBranch`Libravatar Johannes Schindelin1-0/+3
In addition to the manual adjustment to let the `linux-gcc` CI job run the test suite with `master` and then with `main`, this patch makes sure that GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME is set in all test scripts that currently rely on the initial branch name being `master by default. To determine which test scripts to mark up, the first step was to force-set the default branch name to `master` in - all test scripts that contain the keyword `master`, - t4211, which expects `t/t4211/history.export` with a hard-coded ref to initialize the default branch, - t5560 because it sources `t/t556x_common` which uses `master`, - t8002 and t8012 because both source `t/annotate-tests.sh` which also uses `master`) This trick was performed by this command: $ sed -i '/^ *\. \.\/\(test-lib\|lib-\(bash\|cvs\|git-svn\)\|gitweb-lib\)\.sh$/i\ GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME=master\ export GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME\ ' $(git grep -l master t/t[0-9]*.sh) \ t/t4211*.sh t/t5560*.sh t/t8002*.sh t/t8012*.sh After that, careful, manual inspection revealed that some of the test scripts containing the needle `master` do not actually rely on a specific default branch name: either they mention `master` only in a comment, or they initialize that branch specificially, or they do not actually refer to the current default branch. Therefore, the aforementioned modification was undone in those test scripts thusly: $ git checkout HEAD -- \ t/t0027-auto-crlf.sh t/t0060-path-utils.sh \ t/t1011-read-tree-sparse-checkout.sh \ t/t1305-config-include.sh t/t1309-early-config.sh \ t/t1402-check-ref-format.sh t/t1450-fsck.sh \ t/t2024-checkout-dwim.sh \ t/t2106-update-index-assume-unchanged.sh \ t/t3040-subprojects-basic.sh t/t3301-notes.sh \ t/t3308-notes-merge.sh t/t3423-rebase-reword.sh \ t/t3436-rebase-more-options.sh \ t/t4015-diff-whitespace.sh t/t4257-am-interactive.sh \ t/t5323-pack-redundant.sh t/t5401-update-hooks.sh \ t/t5511-refspec.sh t/t5526-fetch-submodules.sh \ t/t5529-push-errors.sh t/t5530-upload-pack-error.sh \ t/t5548-push-porcelain.sh \ t/t5552-skipping-fetch-negotiator.sh \ t/t5572-pull-submodule.sh t/t5608-clone-2gb.sh \ t/t5614-clone-submodules-shallow.sh \ t/t7508-status.sh t/t7606-merge-custom.sh \ t/t9302-fast-import-unpack-limit.sh We excluded one set of test scripts in these commands, though: the range of `git p4` tests. The reason? `git p4` stores the (foreign) remote branch in the branch called `p4/master`, which is obviously not the default branch. Manual analysis revealed that only five of these tests actually require a specific default branch name to pass; They were modified thusly: $ sed -i '/^ *\. \.\/lib-git-p4\.sh$/i\ GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME=master\ export GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME\ ' t/t980[0167]*.sh t/t9811*.sh Signed-off-by: Johannes Schindelin <johannes.schindelin@gmx.de> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>

2020-04-07sequencer: honor GIT_REFLOG_ACTIONLibravatar Elijah Newren1-8/+8
There is a lot of code to honor GIT_REFLOG_ACTION throughout git, including some in sequencer.c; unfortunately, reflog_message() and its callers ignored it. Instruct reflog_message() to check the existing environment variable, and use it when present as an override to action_name(). Also restructure pick_commits() to only temporarily modify GIT_REFLOG_ACTION for a short duration and then restore the old value, so that when we do this setting within a loop we do not keep adding " (pick)" substrings and end up with a reflog message of the form rebase (pick) (pick) (pick) (finish): returning to refs/heads/master Signed-off-by: Elijah Newren <newren@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2020-02-16rebase: rename the two primary rebase backendsLibravatar Elijah Newren1-6/+6
Two related changes, with separate rationale for each: Rename the 'interactive' backend to 'merge' because: * 'interactive' as a name caused confusion; this backend has been used for many kinds of non-interactive rebases, and will probably be used in the future for more non-interactive rebases than interactive ones given that we are making it the default. * 'interactive' is not the underlying strategy; merging is. * the directory where state is stored is not called .git/rebase-interactive but .git/rebase-merge. Rename the 'am' backend to 'apply' because: * Few users are familiar with git-am as a reference point. * Related to the above, the name 'am' makes sentences in the documentation harder for users to read and comprehend (they may read it as the verb from "I am"); avoiding this difficult places a large burden on anyone writing documentation about this backend to be very careful with quoting and sentence structure and often forces annoying redundancy to try to avoid such problems. * Users stumble over pronunciation ("am" as in "I am a person not a backend" or "am" as in "the first and thirteenth letters in the alphabet in order are "A-M"); this may drive confusion when one user tries to explain to another what they are doing. * While "am" is the tool driving this backend, the tool driving git-am is git-apply, and since we are driving towards lower-level tools for the naming of the merge backend we may as well do so here too. * The directory where state is stored has never been called .git/rebase-am, it was always called .git/rebase-apply. For all the reasons listed above: * Modify the documentation to refer to the backends with the new names * Provide a brief note in the documentation connecting the new names to the old names in case users run across the old names anywhere (e.g. in old release notes or older versions of the documentation) * Change the (new) --am command line flag to --apply * Rename some enums, variables, and functions to reinforce the new backend names for us as well. 2020-02-16rebase tests: mark tests specific to the am-backend with --amLibravatar Elijah Newren1-6/+6

2019-01-07rebase: implement --merge via the interactive machineryLibravatar Elijah Newren1-6/+1
As part of an ongoing effort to make rebase have more uniform behavior, modify the merge backend to behave like the interactive one, by re-implementing it on top of the latter. Interactive rebases are implemented in terms of cherry-pick rather than the merge-recursive builtin, but cherry-pick also calls into the recursive merge machinery by default and can accept special merge strategies and/or special strategy options. As such, there really is not any need for having both git-rebase--merge and git-rebase--interactive anymore. Delete git-rebase--merge.sh and instead implement it in builtin/rebase.c. This results in a few deliberate but small user-visible changes: * The progress output is modified (see t3406 and t3420 for examples) * A few known test failures are now fixed (see t3421) * bash-prompt during a rebase --merge is now REBASE-i instead of REBASE-m. Reason: The prompt is a reflection of the backend in use; this allows users to report an issue to the git mailing list with the appropriate backend information, and allows advanced users to know where to search for relevant control files. (see t9903) testcase modification notes: t3406: --interactive and --merge had slightly different progress output while running; adjust a test to match the new expectation t3420: these test precise output while running, but rebase--am, rebase--merge, and rebase--interactive all were built on very different commands (am, merge-recursive, cherry-pick), so the tests expected different output for each type. Now we expect --merge and --interactive to have the same output. t3421: --interactive fixes some bugs in --merge! Wahoo! t9903: --merge uses the interactive backend so the prompt expected is now REBASE-i. Signed-off-by: Elijah Newren <newren@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2018-12-01Merge branch 'js/rebase-stat-unrelated-fix'Libravatar Junio C Hamano1-0/+10
"git rebase --stat" to transplant a piece of history onto a totally unrelated history were not working before and silently showed wrong result. With the recent reimplementation in C, it started to instead die with an error message, as the original logic was not prepared to cope with this case. This has now been fixed. * js/rebase-stat-unrelated-fix: rebase --stat: fix when rebasing to an unrelated history
2018-11-30rebase --stat: fix when rebasing to an unrelated historyLibravatar Johannes Schindelin1-0/+10
When rebasing to a commit history that has no common commits with the current branch, there is no merge base. In diffstat mode, this means that we cannot compare to the merge base, but we have to compare to the empty tree instead. Also, if running in verbose diffstat mode, we should not output Changes from <merge-base> to <onto> as that does not make sense without any merge base. Note: neither scripted nor built-in versoin of `git rebase` were prepared for this situation well. We use this opportunity not only to fix the bug(s), but also to make both versions' output consistent in this instance. And add a regression test to keep this working in all eternity. 2018-11-30rebase: fix GIT_REFLOG_ACTION regressionLibravatar Johannes Schindelin1-0/+26
The scripted version of "rebase" honored the `GIT_REFLOG_ACTION`, and some automation scripts expected the reflog entries to be prefixed with "rebase -i", not "rebase", after running "rebase -i". This regressed in the reimplementation in C. Fix that, and add a regression test, both with `GIT_REFLOG_ACTION` set and unset. Note: the reflog message for "rebase finished" did *not* honor GIT_REFLOG_ACTION, and as we are very late in the v2.20.0-rcN phase, we leave that bug for later (as it seems that that bug has been with us from the very beginning). 2018-11-19Merge branch 'ab/dynamic-gettext-poison'Libravatar Junio C Hamano1-1/+1
Our testing framework uses a special i18n "poisoned localization" feature to find messages that ought to stay constant but are incorrectly marked to be translated. This feature has been made into a runtime option (it used to be a compile-time option). * ab/dynamic-gettext-poison: Makefile: ease dynamic-gettext-poison transition i18n: make GETTEXT_POISON a runtime option
2018-11-16rebase: validate -C<n> and --whitespace=<mode> parameters earlyLibravatar Johannes Schindelin1-0/+7
It is a good idea to error out early upon seeing, say, `-Cbad`, rather than starting the rebase only to have the `--am` backend complain later. Let's do this. The only options accepting parameters which we pass through to `git am` (which may, or may not, forward them to `git apply`) are `-C` and `--whitespace`. The other options we pass through do not accept parameters, so we do not have to validate them here. 2018-11-09i18n: make GETTEXT_POISON a runtime optionLibravatar Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason1-1/+1
Change the GETTEXT_POISON compile-time + runtime GIT_GETTEXT_POISON test parameter to only be a GIT_TEST_GETTEXT_POISON=<non-empty?> runtime parameter, to be consistent with other parameters documented in "Running tests with special setups" in t/README. When I added GETTEXT_POISON in bb946bba76 ("i18n: add GETTEXT_POISON to simulate unfriendly translator", 2011-02-22) I was concerned with ensuring that the _() function would get constant folded if NO_GETTEXT was defined, and likewise that GETTEXT_POISON would be compiled out unless it was defined. But as the benchmark in my [1] shows doing a one-off runtime getenv("GIT_TEST_[...]") is trivial, and since GETTEXT_POISON was originally added the GIT_TEST_* env variables have become the common idiom for turning on special test setups. So change GETTEXT_POISON to work the same way. Now the GETTEXT_POISON=YesPlease compile-time option is gone, and running the tests with GIT_TEST_GETTEXT_POISON=[YesPlease|] can be toggled on/off without recompiling. This allows for conditionally amending tests to test with/without poison, similar to what 859fdc0c3c ("commit-graph: define GIT_TEST_COMMIT_GRAPH", 2018-08-29) did for GIT_TEST_COMMIT_GRAPH. Do some of that, now we e.g. always run the t0205-gettext-poison.sh test. I did enough there to remove the GETTEXT_POISON prerequisite, but its inverse C_LOCALE_OUTPUT is still around, and surely some tests using it can be converted to e.g. always set GIT_TEST_GETTEXT_POISON=. Notes on the implementation: * We still compile a dedicated GETTEXT_POISON build in Travis CI. Perhaps this should be revisited and integrated into the "linux-gcc" build, see ae59a4e44f ("travis: run tests with GIT_TEST_SPLIT_INDEX", 2018-01-07) for prior art in that area. Then again maybe not, see [2]. * We now skip a test in t0000-basic.sh under GIT_TEST_GETTEXT_POISON=YesPlease that wasn't skipped before. This test relies on C locale output, but due to an edge case in how the previous implementation of GETTEXT_POISON worked (reading it from GIT-BUILD-OPTIONS) wasn't enabling poison correctly. Now it does, and needs to be skipped. * The getenv() function is not reentrant, so out of paranoia about code of the form: printf(_("%s"), getenv("some-env")); call use_gettext_poison() in our early setup in git_setup_gettext() so we populate the "poison_requested" variable in a codepath that's won't suffer from that race condition. * We error out in the Makefile if you're still saying GETTEXT_POISON=YesPlease to prompt users to change their invocation. * We should not print out poisoned messages during the test initialization itself to keep it more readable, so the test library hides the variable if set in $GIT_TEST_GETTEXT_POISON_ORIG during setup. See [3]. 2012-07-25i18n: rebase: mark messages for translationLibravatar Jiang Xin1-1/+8
Mark messages in git-rebase.sh for translation. While doing this Jonathan noticed that the comma usage and sentence structure of the resolvemsg was not quite right, so correct that and its cousins in git-am.sh and t/t0201-gettext-fallbacks.sh at the same time. 2012-05-30rebase: report invalid commit correctlyLibravatar Erik Faye-Lund1-0/+5
In 9765b6a (rebase: align variable content, 2011-02-06), the code to error out was moved up one level. Unfortunately, one reference to a function parameter wasn't rewritten as it should, leading to the wrong parameter being errored on. This error was propagated by 71786f5 (rebase: factor out reference parsing, 2011-02-06) and merged in 78c6e0f (Merge branch 'mz/rebase', 2011-04-28). Correct this by reporting $onto_name istead. 2008-03-13add test_cmp function for test scriptsLibravatar Jeff King1-1/+1
Many scripts compare actual and expected output using "diff -u". This is nicer than "cmp" because the output shows how the two differ. However, not all versions of diff understand -u, leading to unnecessary test failure. This adds a test_cmp function to the test scripts and switches all "diff -u" invocations to use it. The function uses the contents of "$GIT_TEST_CMP" to compare its arguments; the default is "diff -u". On systems with a less-capable diff, you can do: GIT_TEST_CMP=cmp make test Signed-off-by: Jeff King <peff@peff.net> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
