Change a fragile test pattern that's been with us ever since these
tests were introduced in [1], [2] and [3] to properly return the exit
code of the failing command on failure.
Because of this I'd marked this test as passing under SANITIZE=leak in
[4] and [5]. We need to remove those annotations as these tests will
no longer pass.

Mark some tests that match "*notes*" as passing when git is compiled
with SANITIZE=leak. They'll now be listed as running under the
"GIT_TEST_PASSING_SANITIZE_LEAK=true" test mode (the "linux-leaks" CI
target).

Carefully excluding t3040, which sees independent development elsewhere
at the time of writing, we transition above-mentioned tests to the
default branch name `main`. This trick was performed via
$ (cd t &&
sed -i -e 's/master/main/g' -e 's/MASTER/MAIN/g' \
-e 's/Master/Main/g' -- t3[0-3]*.sh t3206/* &&
git checkout HEAD -- t3040\*)
This allows us to define `GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME=main`
for those tests.

In addition to the manual adjustment to let the `linux-gcc` CI job run
the test suite with `master` and then with `main`, this patch makes sure
that GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME is set in all test scripts
that currently rely on the initial branch name being `master by default.
To determine which test scripts to mark up, the first step was to
force-set the default branch name to `master` in
- all test scripts that contain the keyword `master`,
- t4211, which expects `t/t4211/history.export` with a hard-coded ref to
initialize the default branch,
- t5560 because it sources `t/t556x_common` which uses `master`,
- t8002 and t8012 because both source `t/annotate-tests.sh` which also
uses `master`)
This trick was performed by this command:
$ sed -i '/^ *\. \.\/\(test-lib\|lib-\(bash\|cvs\|git-svn\)\|gitweb-lib\)\.sh$/i\
GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME=master\
export GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME\
' $(git grep -l master t/t[0-9]*.sh) \
t/t4211*.sh t/t5560*.sh t/t8002*.sh t/t8012*.sh
After that, careful, manual inspection revealed that some of the test
scripts containing the needle `master` do not actually rely on a
specific default branch name: either they mention `master` only in a
comment, or they initialize that branch specificially, or they do not
actually refer to the current default branch. Therefore, the
aforementioned modification was undone in those test scripts thusly:
$ git checkout HEAD -- \
t/t0027-auto-crlf.sh t/t0060-path-utils.sh \
t/t1011-read-tree-sparse-checkout.sh \
t/t1305-config-include.sh t/t1309-early-config.sh \
t/t1402-check-ref-format.sh t/t1450-fsck.sh \
t/t2024-checkout-dwim.sh \
t/t2106-update-index-assume-unchanged.sh \
t/t3040-subprojects-basic.sh t/t3301-notes.sh \
t/t3308-notes-merge.sh t/t3423-rebase-reword.sh \
t/t3436-rebase-more-options.sh \
t/t4015-diff-whitespace.sh t/t4257-am-interactive.sh \
t/t5323-pack-redundant.sh t/t5401-update-hooks.sh \
t/t5511-refspec.sh t/t5526-fetch-submodules.sh \
t/t5529-push-errors.sh t/t5530-upload-pack-error.sh \
t/t5548-push-porcelain.sh \
t/t5552-skipping-fetch-negotiator.sh \
t/t5572-pull-submodule.sh t/t5608-clone-2gb.sh \
t/t5614-clone-submodules-shallow.sh \
t/t7508-status.sh t/t7606-merge-custom.sh \
t/t9302-fast-import-unpack-limit.sh
We excluded one set of test scripts in these commands, though: the range
of `git p4` tests. The reason? `git p4` stores the (foreign) remote
branch in the branch called `p4/master`, which is obviously not the
default branch. Manual analysis revealed that only five of these tests
actually require a specific default branch name to pass; They were
modified thusly:
$ sed -i '/^ *\. \.\/lib-git-p4\.sh$/i\
GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME=master\
export GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME\
' t/t980[0167]*.sh t/t9811*.sh

Two tests (t3302 and t3419) used to have their own environment
variable to trigger expensive tests without enabling expensive
tests in other scripts; a user could set GIT_NOTES_TIMING_TESTS
but not GIT_TEST_LONG and run the whole test suite and trigger
expensive tests only in t3302 but not other tests. The same for
GIT_PATCHID_TIMING_TESTS in t3419.
While this may have seemed a good flexibility, in reality if you are
concentrating on a single test (e.g. t3302), you can just run that
single test with the GIT_TEST_LONG to trigger expensive tests. It
does not seem worth forcing other people who may want to come up
with their own expensive tests to invent new environment variables
by keeping this convention.
Drop them.

This was only necessary because do_tests helper the script defines
took its parameters in a wrong order. Just pass an empty string (or
not passing the optional EXPENSIVE prerequisite) when running the
test with a light-weight set of parameters and have the shell do the
right thing when parsing test_expect_success helper.

Use "<<-END_OF_HERE_TEXT" to push the contents of here-text to the
right in order to show the loop structure better.
Use write_script when writing a script to be run.
Use "test" (not "[ ... ]") and avoid unnecessary ";" in the middle

The git-notes expensive timing test is only expensive because it
either did 10,100,1k and 10k iterations or nothing.
Change it to do 10 by default, with an option to run the expensive
version with the old GIT_NOTES_TIMING_TESTS=ZomgYesPlease variable.
Since nobody was ostensibly running this test under TAP the code had
bitrotted so that it emitted invalid TAP. This change fixes that.
The old version would also mysteriously fail on systems without
/usr/bin/time, there's now a check for that using the multiple test
prerequisite facility.

SKIP messages are now part of the TAP plan. A TAP harness now knows
why a particular test was skipped and can report that information. The
non-TAP harness built into Git's test-lib did nothing special with
these messages, and is unaffected by these changes.

Creating repos with 10/100/1000/10000 commits and notes takes a lot of time.
However, using git-fast-import to do the job is a lot more efficient than
using plumbing commands to do the same.
This patch decreases the overall run-time of this test on my machine from
~3 to ~1 minutes.

git-notes have the potential of being pretty expensive, so test with
a lot of commits. A lot. So to make things cheaper, you have to
opt-in explicitely, by setting the environment variable
