2018-08-21tests: use 'test_must_be_empty' instead of '! test -s'Libravatar SZEDER Gábor1-3/+3
Using 'test_must_be_empty' is preferable to '! test -s', because it gives a helpful error message if the given file is unexpectedly not empty, while the latter remains completely silent. Furthermore, it also catches cases when the given file unexpectedly does not exist at all. This patch was basically created by: sed -i -e 's/! test -s/test_must_be_empty/' t[0-9]*.sh with the following notable exceptions: - The '! test -s' check in '.gitmodules ignore=dirty suppresses submodules with untracked content' in 't7508-status.sh' is left as-is, because it's bogus and, therefore, it's subject of a dedicated patch. - The '! test -s' checks in 't9131-git-svn-empty-symlink.sh' and 't9135-git-svn-moved-branch-empty-file.sh' are immediately preceeded by a 'test -f' to ensure that the files exist in the first place. 'test_must_be_empty' ensures that as well, so those 'test -f' commands are removed as well. Signed-off-by: SZEDER Gábor <szeder.dev@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2017-06-13Merge branch 'sb/submodule-blanket-recursive'Libravatar Junio C Hamano1-2/+2
Many commands learned to pay attention to submodule.recurse configuration. * sb/submodule-blanket-recursive: builtin/fetch.c: respect 'submodule.recurse' option builtin/push.c: respect 'submodule.recurse' option builtin/grep.c: respect 'submodule.recurse' option Introduce 'submodule.recurse' option for worktree manipulators submodule loading: separate code path for .gitmodules and config overlay reset/checkout/read-tree: unify config callback for submodule recursion submodule test invocation: only pass additional arguments submodule recursing: do not write a config variable twice
2017-05-30submodule test invocation: only pass additional argumentsLibravatar Stefan Beller1-2/+2
In a later patch we want to introduce a config option to trigger the submodule recursing by default. As this option should be available and uniform across all commands that deal with submodules we'd want to test for this option in the submodule update library. So instead of calling the whole test set again for "git -c submodule.recurse foo" instead of "git foo --recurse-submodules", we'd only want to introduce one basic test that tests if the option is recognized and respected to not overload the test suite. Change the test functions by taking only the argument and assemble the command inside the test function by embedding the arguments into the command that is "git $arguments --recurse-submodules". It would be nice to do this for all functions in lib-submodule-update, but we cannot do that for the non-recursing tests, as there we do not just pass in a git command but whole functions. (See t3426 for example) Signed-off-by: Stefan Beller <sbeller@google.com> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2017-05-04submodule: properly recurse for read-tree and checkoutLibravatar Stefan Beller1-1/+0
We forgot to prepare the submodule env, which is only a problem for nested submodules. See 2e5d6503bd (ls-files: fix recurse-submodules with nested submodules, 2017-04-13) for further explanation. To come up with a proper test for this, we'd need to look at nested submodules just as in that given commit. It turns out we're lucky and these tests already exist, but are marked as failing. We need to pass `--recurse-submodules` to read-tree additionally to make these tests pass. Passing that flag alone would not make the tests pass, such that this covers testing for the bug fix of the submodule env as well. 2017-03-16builtin/checkout: add --recurse-submodules switchLibravatar Stefan Beller1-0/+6
This exposes a flag to recurse into submodules in builtin/checkout making use of the code implemented in prior patches. A new failure mode is introduced in the submodule update library, as the directory/submodule conflict is not solved in prior patches. 2013-01-15reset $pathspec: exit with code 0 if successfulLibravatar Martin von Zweigbergk1-1/+1
"git reset $pathspec" currently exits with a non-zero exit code if the worktree is dirty after resetting, which is inconsistent with reset without pathspec, and it makes it harder to know whether the command really failed. Change it to exit with code 0 regardless of whether the worktree is dirty so that non-zero indicates an error. This makes the 4 "disambiguation" test cases in t7102 clearer since they all used to "fail", 3 of which "failed" due to changes in the work tree. Now only the ambiguous one fails. 2010-08-30checkout: Use submodule.*.ignore settings from .git/config and .gitmodulesLibravatar Jens Lehmann1-0/+16
For "git status" and the diff family the submodule.*.ignore settings from .git/config and .gitmodules can be used to override the default set via diff.ignoreSubmodules on a per-submodule basis. Let's do this consistently and teach checkout to use these settings too. Signed-off-by: Jens Lehmann <Jens.Lehmann@web.de> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>

2009-04-02Fix 'git checkout <submodule>' to update the indexLibravatar Johannes Schindelin1-0/+42
While 'git checkout <submodule>' should not update the submodule's working directory, it should update the index. This is in line with how submodules are handled in the rest of Git. While at it, test 'git reset [<commit>] <submodule>', too. Signed-off-by: Johannes Schindelin <johannes.schindelin@gmx.de> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
