2021-02-10tests: remove most uses of C_LOCALE_OUTPUTLibravatar Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason1-1/+1
As a follow-up to d162b25f956 (tests: remove support for GIT_TEST_GETTEXT_POISON, 2021-01-20) remove those uses of the now always true C_LOCALE_OUTPUT prerequisite from those tests which declare it as an argument to test_expect_{success,failure}. 2020-11-19t[01]*: adjust the references to the default branch name "main"Libravatar Johannes Schindelin1-27/+27
Carefully excluding t1309, which sees independent development elsewhere at the time of writing, we transition above-mentioned tests to the default branch name `main`. This trick was performed via $ (cd t && sed -i -e 's/master/main/g' -e 's/MASTER/MAIN/g' \ -e 's/Master/Main/g' -e 's/naster/nain/g' -- t[01]*.sh && git checkout HEAD -- t1309\*) Note that t5533 contains a variation of the name `master` (`naster`) that we rename here, too. This allows us to define `GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME=main` for those tests. 2020-11-19tests: mark tests relying on the current default for `init.defaultBranch`Libravatar Johannes Schindelin1-0/+3
In addition to the manual adjustment to let the `linux-gcc` CI job run the test suite with `master` and then with `main`, this patch makes sure that GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME is set in all test scripts that currently rely on the initial branch name being `master by default. To determine which test scripts to mark up, the first step was to force-set the default branch name to `master` in - all test scripts that contain the keyword `master`, - t4211, which expects `t/t4211/history.export` with a hard-coded ref to initialize the default branch, - t5560 because it sources `t/t556x_common` which uses `master`, - t8002 and t8012 because both source `t/annotate-tests.sh` which also uses `master`) This trick was performed by this command: $ sed -i '/^ *\. \.\/\(test-lib\|lib-\(bash\|cvs\|git-svn\)\|gitweb-lib\)\.sh$/i\ GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME=master\ export GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME\ ' $(git grep -l master t/t[0-9]*.sh) \ t/t4211*.sh t/t5560*.sh t/t8002*.sh t/t8012*.sh After that, careful, manual inspection revealed that some of the test scripts containing the needle `master` do not actually rely on a specific default branch name: either they mention `master` only in a comment, or they initialize that branch specificially, or they do not actually refer to the current default branch. Therefore, the aforementioned modification was undone in those test scripts thusly: $ git checkout HEAD -- \ t/t0027-auto-crlf.sh t/t0060-path-utils.sh \ t/t1011-read-tree-sparse-checkout.sh \ t/t1305-config-include.sh t/t1309-early-config.sh \ t/t1402-check-ref-format.sh t/t1450-fsck.sh \ t/t2024-checkout-dwim.sh \ t/t2106-update-index-assume-unchanged.sh \ t/t3040-subprojects-basic.sh t/t3301-notes.sh \ t/t3308-notes-merge.sh t/t3423-rebase-reword.sh \ t/t3436-rebase-more-options.sh \ t/t4015-diff-whitespace.sh t/t4257-am-interactive.sh \ t/t5323-pack-redundant.sh t/t5401-update-hooks.sh \ t/t5511-refspec.sh t/t5526-fetch-submodules.sh \ t/t5529-push-errors.sh t/t5530-upload-pack-error.sh \ t/t5548-push-porcelain.sh \ t/t5552-skipping-fetch-negotiator.sh \ t/t5572-pull-submodule.sh t/t5608-clone-2gb.sh \ t/t5614-clone-submodules-shallow.sh \ t/t7508-status.sh t/t7606-merge-custom.sh \ t/t9302-fast-import-unpack-limit.sh We excluded one set of test scripts in these commands, though: the range of `git p4` tests. The reason? `git p4` stores the (foreign) remote branch in the branch called `p4/master`, which is obviously not the default branch. Manual analysis revealed that only five of these tests actually require a specific default branch name to pass; They were modified thusly: $ sed -i '/^ *\. \.\/lib-git-p4\.sh$/i\ GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME=master\ export GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME\ ' t/t980[0167]*.sh t/t9811*.sh Signed-off-by: Johannes Schindelin <johannes.schindelin@gmx.de> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2017-11-15branch: correctly reject refs/heads/{-dash,HEAD}Libravatar Junio C Hamano1-0/+43
strbuf_check_branch_ref() is the central place where many codepaths see if a proposed name is suitable for the name of a branch. It was designed to allow us to get stricter than the check_refname_format() check used for refnames in general, and we already use it to reject a branch whose name begins with a '-'. The function gets a strbuf and a string "name", and returns non-zero if the name is not appropriate as the name for a branch. When the name is good, it places the full refname for the branch with the proposed name in the strbuf before it returns. However, it turns out that one caller looks at what is in the strbuf even when the function returns an error. Make the function populate the strbuf even when it returns an error. That way, when "-dash" is given as name, "refs/heads/-dash" is placed in the strbuf when returning an error to copy_or_rename_branch(), which notices that the user is trying to recover with "git branch -m -- -dash dash" to rename "-dash" to "dash". While at it, use the same mechanism to also reject "HEAD" as a branch name. 2017-05-11tests: fix tests broken under GETTEXT_POISON=YesPleaseLibravatar Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason1-1/+1
The GETTEXT_POISON=YesPlease compile-time testing option added in my bb946bba76 ("i18n: add GETTEXT_POISON to simulate unfriendly translator", 2011-02-22) has been slowly bitrotting as strings have been marked for translation, and new tests have been added without running it. I brought this up on the list ("[BUG] test suite broken with GETTEXT_POISON=YesPlease", [1]) asking whether this mode was useful at all anymore. At least one person occasionally uses it, and Lars Schneider offered to change one of the the Travis builds to run in this mode, so fix up the failing ones. My test setup runs most of the tests, with the notable exception of skipping all the p4 tests, so it's possible that there's still some lurking regressions I haven't fixed. 1. <CACBZZX62+acvi1dpkknadTL827mtCm_QesGSZ=6+UnyeMpg8+Q@mail.gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason <avarab@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2016-06-13ref_transaction_update(): check refname_is_safe() at a minimumLibravatar Michael Haggerty1-1/+1
If the user has asked that a new value be set for a reference, we use check_refname_format() to verify that the reference name satisfies all of the rules. But in other cases, at least check that refname_is_safe(). Signed-off-by: Michael Haggerty <mhagger@alum.mit.edu>

2015-09-25branch.c: use 'ref-filter' APIsLibravatar Karthik Nayak1-11/+20
Make 'branch.c' use 'ref-filter' APIs for iterating through refs sorting. This removes most of the code used in 'branch.c' replacing it with calls to the 'ref-filter' library. Make 'branch.c' use the 'filter_refs()' function provided by 'ref-filter' to filter out tags based on the options set. We provide a sorting option provided for 'branch.c' by using the sorting options provided by 'ref-filter'. Also by default, we sort by 'refname'. Since 'HEAD' is alphabatically before 'refs/...' we end up with an array consisting of the 'HEAD' ref then the local branches and finally the remote-tracking branches. Also remove the 'ignore' variable from ref_array_item as it was previously used for the '--merged' option and now that is handled by ref-filter. Modify some of the tests in t1430 to check the stderr for a warning regarding the broken ref. This is done as ref-filter throws a warning for broken refs rather than directly printing them. Add tests and documentation for the same. 2015-04-16t1430: add another refs-escape testLibravatar Jeff King1-0/+8
In t1430, we check whether deleting the branch "../../foo" will delete ".git/foo". However, this is not that interesting a test; the precious file ".git/foo" does not look like a ref, so even if we did not notice the "escape" from the "refs/" hierarchy, we would fail for that reason (i.e., if you turned refname_is_safe into a noop, the test still passes). Let's add an additional test for the same thing, but with a file that actually looks like a ref. That will make sure we are exercising the refname_is_safe code. While we're at it, let's also make the code work a little harder by adding some extra paths and some empty path components. 2014-10-15refs.c: allow listing and deleting badly named refsLibravatar Ronnie Sahlberg1-1/+124
We currently do not handle badly named refs well: $ cp .git/refs/heads/master .git/refs/heads/master.....@\*@\\. $ git branch fatal: Reference has invalid format: 'refs/heads/master.....@*@\.' $ git branch -D master.....@\*@\\. error: branch 'master.....@*@\.' not found. Users cannot recover from a badly named ref without manually finding and deleting the loose ref file or appropriate line in packed-refs. Making that easier will make it easier to tweak the ref naming rules in the future, for example to forbid shell metacharacters like '`' and '"', without putting people in a state that is hard to get out of. So allow "branch --list" to show these refs and allow "branch -d/-D" and "update-ref -d" to delete them. Other commands (for example to rename refs) will continue to not handle these refs but can be changed in later patches. Details: In resolving functions, refuse to resolve refs that don't pass the git-check-ref-format(1) check unless the new RESOLVE_REF_ALLOW_BAD_NAME flag is passed. Even with RESOLVE_REF_ALLOW_BAD_NAME, refuse to resolve refs that escape the refs/ directory and do not match the pattern [A-Z_]* (think "HEAD" and "MERGE_HEAD"). In locking functions, refuse to act on badly named refs unless they are being deleted and either are in the refs/ directory or match [A-Z_]*. Just like other invalid refs, flag resolved, badly named refs with the REF_ISBROKEN flag, treat them as resolving to null_sha1, and skip them in all iteration functions except for for_each_rawref. Flag badly named refs (but not symrefs pointing to badly named refs) with a REF_BAD_NAME flag to make it easier for future callers to notice and handle them specially. For example, in a later patch for-each-ref will use this flag to detect refs whose names can confuse callers parsing for-each-ref output. In the transaction API, refuse to create or update badly named refs, but allow deleting them (unless they try to escape refs/ and don't match [A-Z_]*). 2014-10-15test: put tests for handling of bad ref names in one placeLibravatar Ronnie Sahlberg1-0/+84
