2020-11-19t[01]*: adjust the references to the default branch name "main"Libravatar Johannes Schindelin1-2/+2
Carefully excluding t1309, which sees independent development elsewhere at the time of writing, we transition above-mentioned tests to the default branch name `main`. This trick was performed via $ (cd t && sed -i -e 's/master/main/g' -e 's/MASTER/MAIN/g' \ -e 's/Master/Main/g' -e 's/naster/nain/g' -- t[01]*.sh && git checkout HEAD -- t1309\*) Note that t5533 contains a variation of the name `master` (`naster`) that we rename here, too. This allows us to define `GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME=main` for those tests. In addition to the manual adjustment to let the `linux-gcc` CI job run the test suite with `master` and then with `main`, this patch makes sure that GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME is set in all test scripts that currently rely on the initial branch name being `master by default. To determine which test scripts to mark up, the first step was to force-set the default branch name to `master` in - all test scripts that contain the keyword `master`, - t4211, which expects `t/t4211/history.export` with a hard-coded ref to initialize the default branch, - t5560 because it sources `t/t556x_common` which uses `master`, - t8002 and t8012 because both source `t/annotate-tests.sh` which also uses `master`) This trick was performed by this command: $ sed -i '/^ *\. \.\/\(test-lib\|lib-\(bash\|cvs\|git-svn\)\|gitweb-lib\)\.sh$/i\ GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME=master\ export GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_INITIAL_BRANCH_NAME\ ' $(git grep -l master t/t[0-9]*.sh) \ t/t4211*.sh t/t5560*.sh t/t8002*.sh t/t8012*.sh After that, careful, manual inspection revealed that some of the test scripts containing the needle `master` do not actually rely on a specific default branch name: either they mention `master` only in a comment, or they initialize that branch specificially, or they do not actually refer to the current default branch. The reason? `git p4` stores the (foreign) remote branch in the branch called `p4/master`, which is obviously not the default branch. 2011-05-25Teach read-tree the -n|--dry-run optionLibravatar Jens Lehmann1-1/+2
The option can be used to check if read-tree with the same set of other options like "-m" and "-u" would succeed without actually changing either the index or the working tree. The relevant tests in the t10?? range were extended to do a read-tree -n before the real read-tree to make sure neither the index nor any local files were changed with -n and the same exit code as without -n is returned. The helper functions added for that purpose reside in the new t/lib-read-tree.sh file. The only exception is #13 in t1004 ("unlinking an un-unlink-able symlink"). "git read-tree A B C..." without the "-m" (merge) option is a way to read these trees on top of each other to get an overlay of them. An ancient commit ee6566e (Rewrite read-tree, 2005-09-05) passed the ADD_CACHE_SKIP_DFCHECK flag when calling add_index_entry() to add the paths obtained from these trees to the index, but it is an incorrect use of the flag. The flag is meant to be used by callers who know the addition of the entry does not introduce a D/F conflict to the index in order to avoid the overhead of checking. This bug resulted in a bogus index that records both "x" and "x/z" as a blob after reading three trees that have paths ("x"), ("x", "y"), and ("x/z", "y") respectively. 34110cd (Make 'unpack_trees()' have a separate source and destination index, 2008-03-06) refactored the callsites of add_index_entry() incorrectly and added more codepaths that use this flag when it shouldn't be used. Also, 0190457 (Move 'unpack_trees()' over to 'traverse_trees()' interface, 2008-03-05) introduced a bug to call add_index_entry() for the tree that does not have the path in it, passing NULL as a cache entry.
