2021-07-01string-list.[ch]: add a string_list_init_{nodup,dup}()Libravatar Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason1-2/+9
In order to use the new "memcpy() a 'blank' struct on the stack" pattern for string_list_init(), and to make the macro initialization consistent with the function initialization introduce two new string_list_init_{nodup,dup}() functions. These are like the old string_list_init() when called with a false and true second argument, respectively. I think this not only makes things more consistent, but also easier to read. I often had to lookup what the ", 0)" or ", 1)" in these invocations meant, now it's right there in the function name, and corresponds to the macros. A subsequent commit will convert existing API users to this pattern, but as this is a very common API let's leave a compatibility function in place for later removal. This intermediate state also proves that the compatibility function works. Signed-off-by: Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason <avarab@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2021-07-01*.h: move some *_INIT to designated initializersLibravatar Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason1-2/+2
Move *_INIT macros I'll use in a subsequent commits to designated initializers. This isn't required for those follow-up changes, but since next commits will change things in this area, let's use the modern pattern over the old one while we're at it. 2020-01-07string-list: note in docs that callers can specify sorting functionLibravatar Elijah Newren1-2/+4
In commit 1959bf6430 (string_list API: document what "sorted" means, 2012-09-17), Documentation/technical/api-string-list.txt was updated to specify that strcmp() was used for sorting. In commit 8dd5afc926 (string-list: allow case-insensitive string list, 2013-01-07), a cmp member was added to struct string_list to allow callers to specify an alternative comparison function, but api-string-list.txt was not updated. In commit 4f665f2cf3 (string-list.h: move documentation from Documentation/api/ into header, 2017-09-26), the now out-dated api-string-list.txt documentation was moved into string-list.h. Update the docs to reflect the configurability of sorting. Signed-off-by: Elijah Newren <newren@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>

2019-05-05*.[ch]: manually align parameter listsLibravatar Denton Liu1-1/+1
In previous patches, extern was mechanically removed from function declarations without care to formatting, causing parameter lists to be misaligned. Manually format changed sections such that the parameter lists should be realigned. Viewing this patch with 'git diff -w' should produce no output. 2019-05-05*.[ch]: remove extern from function declarations using spatchLibravatar Denton Liu1-1/+1
There has been a push to remove extern from function declarations. Remove some instances of "extern" for function declarations which are caught by Coccinelle. Note that Coccinelle has some difficulty with processing functions with `__attribute__` or varargs so some `extern` declarations are left behind to be dealt with in a future patch. This was the Coccinelle patch used: @@ type T; identifier f; @@ - extern T f(...); and it was run with: $ git ls-files \*.{c,h} | grep -v ^compat/ | xargs spatch --sp-file contrib/coccinelle/noextern.cocci --in-place Files under `compat/` are intentionally excluded as some are directly copied from external sources and we should avoid churning them as much as possible. 2018-09-11string-list: remove unused function print_string_listLibravatar Stefan Beller1-8/+0
A removal of this helper function was proposed 3 years ago [1]; the function was never used since it was introduced in 2006 back then, and there is no new callers since. Now time has proven we really do not need the function. 2017-09-27string-list.h: move documentation from Documentation/api/ into headerLibravatar Han-Wen Nienhuys1-30/+162
This mirrors commit 'bdfdaa497 ("strbuf.h: integrate api-strbuf.txt documentation, 2015-01-16") which did the same for strbuf.h: * API documentation uses /** */ to set it apart from other comments. * Function names were stripped from the comments. * Ordering of the header was adjusted to follow the one from the text file. * Edited some existing comments from string-list.h for consistency. 2017-09-20for_each_string_list_item: avoid undefined behavior for empty listLibravatar Michael Haggerty1-2/+4
If you pass a newly initialized or newly cleared `string_list` to `for_each_string_list_item()`, then the latter does for ( item = (list)->items; /* NULL */ item < (list)->items + (list)->nr; /* NULL + 0 */ ++item) Even though this probably works almost everywhere, it is undefined behavior, and it could plausibly cause highly-optimizing compilers to misbehave. C99 section 6.5.6 paragraph 8 explains: If both the pointer operand and the result point to elements of the same array object, or one past the last element of the array object, the evaluation shall not produce an overflow; otherwise, the behavior is undefined. and (6.3.2.3.3) a null pointer does not point to anything. Guard the loop with a NULL check to make the intent crystal clear to even the most pedantic compiler. A suitably clever compiler could let the NULL check only run in the first iteration, but regardless, this overhead is likely to be dwarfed by the work to be done on each item. This problem was noticed by Coverity. 2014-07-21string-list: add string_list initializer helper functionLibravatar Tanay Abhra1-0/+2
The string-list API has STRING_LIST_INIT_* macros to be used to define variables with initializers, but lacks functions to initialize an uninitialized piece of memory to be used as a string-list at the run-time. Introduce `string_list_init()` function for that. Signed-off-by: Tanay Abhra <tanayabh@gmail.com> Reviewed-by: Matthieu Moy <Matthieu.Moy@imag.fr> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2014-06-06string-list: spell all values out that are given to a string_list initializerLibravatar Tanay Abhra1-2/+2
STRING_LIST_INIT_{NODUP,DUP} initializers list values only for earlier structure members, relying on the usual convention in C that the omitted members are initailized to 0, i.e. the former is expanded to the latter: struct string_list l = STRING_LIST_INIT_DUP; struct string_list l = { NULL, 0, 0, 1 }; and the last member that is not mentioned (i.e. 'cmp') is initialized to NULL. While there is nothing wrong in this construct, spelling out all the values where the macros are defined will serve also as a documentation, so let's do so. 2013-01-07string-list: allow case-insensitive string listLibravatar Junio C Hamano1-0/+4

2012-10-29string_list_longest_prefix(): remove functionLibravatar Michael Haggerty1-8/+0
This function was added in f103f95b11d087f07c0c48bf784cd9197e18f203 in the erroneous expectation that it would be used in the reimplementation of longest_ancestor_length(). But it turned out to be easier to use a function specialized for comparing path prefixes (i.e., one that knows about slashes and root paths) than to prepare the paths in such a way that a generic string prefix comparison function can be used. So delete string_list_longest_prefix() and its documentation and test cases. Signed-off-by: Michael Haggerty <mhagger@alum.mit.edu> Signed-off-by: Jeff King <peff@peff.net>

2012-09-12string_list: add two new functions for splitting stringsLibravatar Michael Haggerty1-0/+29
Add two new functions, string_list_split() and string_list_split_in_place(). These split a string into a string_list on a separator character. The first makes copies of the substrings (leaving the input string untouched) and the second splits the original string in place, overwriting the separator characters with NULs and referring to the original string's memory. These functions are similar to the strbuf_split_*() functions except that they work with the more powerful string_list interface. 2011-03-16standardize brace placement in struct definitionsLibravatar Jonathan Nieder1-2/+1
In a struct definitions, unlike functions, the prevailing style is for the opening brace to go on the same line as the struct name, like so: struct foo { int bar; char *baz; }; Indeed, grepping for 'struct [a-z_]* {$' yields about 5 times as many matches as 'struct [a-z_]*$'. 2009-02-08Add find_insert_index, insert_at_index and clear_func functions to string_listLibravatar Marius Storm-Olsen1-0/+9
string_list_find_insert_index() and string_list_insert_at_index() enables you to see if an item is in the string_list, and to insert at the appropriate index in the list, if not there. This is usefull if you need to manipulate an existing item, if present, and insert a new item if not. Future mailmap code will use this construct to enable complex (old_name, old_email) -> (new_name, new_email) lookups. The string_list_clear_func() allows to call a custom cleanup function on each item in a string_list, which is useful is the util member points to a complex structure.
