2020-10-16bisect--helper: reimplement `bisect_state` & `bisect_head` shell functions in CLibravatar Pranit Bauva1-51/+4
Reimplement the `bisect_state()` shell functions in C and also add a subcommand `--bisect-state` to `git-bisect--helper` to call them from git-bisect.sh . Using `--bisect-state` subcommand is a temporary measure to port shell function to C so as to use the existing test suite. As more functions are ported, this subcommand will be retired and will be called by some other methods. `bisect_head()` is only called from `bisect_state()`, thus it is not required to introduce another subcommand. Note that the `eval` in the changed line of `git-bisect.sh` cannot be dropped: it is necessary because the `rev` and the `tail` variables may contain multiple, quoted arguments that need to be passed to `bisect--helper` (without the quotes, naturally). 2020-10-16bisect--helper: finish porting `bisect_start()` to CLibravatar Pranit Bauva1-24/+2
Add the subcommand to `git bisect--helper` and call it from git-bisect.sh. With the conversion of `bisect_auto_next()` from shell to C in a previous commit, `bisect_start()` can now be fully ported to C. So let's complete the `--bisect-start` subcommand of `git bisect--helper` so that it fully implements `bisect_start()`, and let's use this subcommand in `git-bisect.sh` instead of `bisect_start()`. Note that the `eval` in the changed line of `git-bisect.sh` cannot be dropped: it is necessary because the `rev` and the `tail` variables may contain multiple, quoted arguments that need to be passed to `bisect--helper` (without the quotes, naturally). functions in C Reimplement the `bisect_next()` and the `bisect_auto_next()` shell functions in C and add the subcommands to `git bisect--helper` to call them from git-bisect.sh . bisect_auto_next() function returns an enum bisect_error type as whole `git bisect` can exit with an error code when bisect_next() does. 2020-08-07cmd_bisect__helper: defer parsing no-checkout flagLibravatar Aaron Lipman1-1/+1
cmd_bisect__helper() is intended as a temporary shim layer serving as an interface for git-bisect.sh. This function and git-bisect.sh should eventually be replaced by a C implementation, cmd_bisect(), serving as an entrypoint for all "git bisect ..." shell commands: cmd_bisect() will only parse the first token following "git bisect", and dispatch the remaining args to the appropriate function ["bisect_start()", "bisect_next()", etc.]. Thus, cmd_bisect__helper() should not be responsible for parsing flags like --no-checkout. Instead, let the --no-checkout flag remain in the argv array, so it may be evaluated alongside the other options already parsed by bisect_start(). 6c722cbe5a (bisect: allow CRLF line endings in "git bisect replay" input, 2020-05-07) includes CR as a field separator, but relies on it not being included in the last field, which breaks at least when running under OpenBSD 6.7's sh. Instead of just assume the CR will get swallowed, read the rest of the line into an otherwise unused variable and ignore it everywhere except on the call for git bisect start, where it matters. 2020-05-08bisect: allow CRLF line endings in "git bisect replay" inputLibravatar Christopher Warrington1-0/+2
We advertise that the bisect log can be corrected in your editor before being fed to "git bisect replay", but some editors may turn the line endings to CRLF. Update the parser of the input lines so that the CR at the end of the line gets ignored. Were anyone to intentionally be using terms/revs with embedded CRs, replaying such bisects will no longer work with this change. I suspect that this is incredibly rare. 2019-01-02bisect--helper: `bisect_start` shell function partially in CLibravatar Pranit Bauva1-130/+2
Reimplement the `bisect_start` shell function partially in C and add `bisect-start` subcommand to `git bisect--helper` to call it from git-bisect.sh . The last part is not converted because it calls another shell function. `bisect_start` shell function will be completed after the `bisect_next` shell function is ported in C. Using `--bisect-start` subcommand is a temporary measure to port shell function in C so as to use the existing test suite. As more functions are ported, this subcommand will be retired and will be called by some other methods. Also introduce a method `bisect_append_log_quoted` to keep things short and crisp. Note that we are a bit lax about command-line parsing because the helper is not supposed to be called by the user directly (but only from the git bisect script). Reimplement the `get_terms` and `bisect_terms` shell function in C and add `bisect-terms` subcommand to `git bisect--helper` to call it from git-bisect.sh . Using `--bisect-terms` subcommand is a temporary measure to port shell function in C so as to use the existing test suite. As more functions are ported, this subcommand will be retired but its implementation will be called by some other methods. Also use error() to report "no terms defined" and accordingly change the test in t6030. We need to use PARSE_OPT_KEEP_UNKNOWN here to allow for parameters that look like options (e.g --term-good) but should not be parsed by cmd_bisect__helper(). This change is safe because all other cmdmodes have strict argc checks already. 2019-01-02bisect--helper: `check_and_set_terms` shell function in CLibravatar Pranit Bauva1-32/+4
Reimplement the `check_and_set_terms` shell function in C and add `check-and-set-terms` subcommand to `git bisect--helper` to call it from git-bisect.sh Using `--check-and-set-terms` subcommand is a temporary measure to port shell function in C so as to use the existing test suite. As more functions are ported, this subcommand will be retired but its implementation will be called by some other methods. check_and_set_terms() sets and receives two global variables namely TERM_GOOD and TERM_BAD in the shell script. Luckily the file BISECT_TERMS also contains the value of those variables so its appropriate to evoke the method get_terms() after calling the subcommand so that it retrieves the value of TERM_GOOD and TERM_BAD from the file BISECT_TERMS. The two global variables are passed as arguments to the subcommand. Reimplement the `bisect_write` shell function in C and add a `bisect-write` subcommand to `git bisect--helper` to call it from git-bisect.sh Using `--bisect-write` subcommand is a temporary measure to port shell function in C so as to use the existing test suite. As more functions are ported, this subcommand will be retired but its implementation will be called by some other methods. Note: bisect_write() uses two variables namely TERM_GOOD and TERM_BAD from the global shell script thus we need to pass it to the subcommand using the arguments. We then store them in a struct bisect_terms and pass the memory address around functions. Add a log_commit() helper function to write the contents of the commit message header to a file which will be re-used in future parts of the code as well. Also introduce a function free_terms() to free the memory of `struct bisect_terms` and set_terms() to set the values of members in `struct bisect_terms`. Positional arguments, such as $0, $1, etc, need to be stored on shell variables for use in translatable strings, according to gettext manual [1]. Add git-sh-setup.sh to LOCALIZED_SH variable in Makefile to enable extraction of string marked for translation by xgettext. Source git-sh-i18n in git-sh-setup.sh for gettext support. git-sh-setup.sh is a shell library to be sourced by other shell scripts. In order to avoid other scripts from sourcing git-sh-i18n twice, remove line that sources it from them. Not sourcing git-sh-i18n in any script that uses gettext would lead to failure due to, for instance, gettextln not being found. 2016-06-17i18n: bisect: simplify error message for i18nLibravatar Vasco Almeida1-2/+3
The message was not being extracted by xgettext, although it was marked for translation, seemingly because it contained a command substitution. Moreover, eval_gettext should be used instead of gettext for strings with substitution. See step 4. of section 15.5.2.1 Preparing Shell Scripts for Internationalization from gettext manual [1]: "Simplify translatable strings so that they don't contain command substitution ("`...`" or "$(...)") 2015-08-03bisect: allow setting any user-specified in 'git bisect start'Libravatar Matthieu Moy1-1/+20
This allows a natural user-interface when looking for any change in the code, not just regression. For example: git bisect start --term-old fast --term-new slow git bisect fast git bisect slow ... There were several proposed user-interfaces for this feature. This patch implements it as options to 'git bisect start' for the following reasons: * By construction, the terms will be valid for one and only one bisection. * Unlike positional arguments, using named options avoid having to remember an order. * We can combine user-defined terms and passing old/new commits as argument to "git bisect start". * The implementation is relatively simple. 2015-08-03bisect: add the terms old/newLibravatar Antoine Delaite1-9/+17
When not looking for a regression during a bisect but for a fix or a change in another given property, it can be confusing to use 'good' and 'bad'. This patch introduce `git bisect new` and `git bisect old` as an alternative to 'bad' and good': the commits which have a certain property must be marked as `new` and the ones which do not as `old`. The output will be the first commit after the change in the property. During a new/old bisect session you cannot use bad/good commands and vice-versa. Some commands are still not available for old/new: * git rev-list --bisect does not treat the revs/bisect/new and revs/bisect/old-SHA1 files. 2015-08-03bisect: sanity check on termsLibravatar Matthieu Moy1-0/+33

2015-08-03bisect: don't mix option parsing and non-trivial codeLibravatar Matthieu Moy1-13/+17
As-is, the revisions that appear on the command-line are processed in order. 2015-08-03bisect: simplify the addition of new bisect termsLibravatar Antoine Delaite1-8/+71
We create a file BISECT_TERMS in the repository .git to be read during a bisection. There's no user-interface yet, but "git bisect" works if terms other than old/new or bad/good are set in .git/BISECT_TERMS. The fonctions to be changed if we add new terms are quite few. 2015-01-14standardize usage info string formatLibravatar Alex Henrie1-1/+1
This patch puts the usage info strings that were not already in docopt- like format into docopt-like format, which will be a litle easier for end users and a lot easier for translators. Changes include: - Placing angle brackets around fill-in-the-blank parameters - Putting dashes in multiword parameter names - Adding spaces to [-f|--foobar] to make [-f | --foobar] - Replacing <foobar>* with [<foobar>...] Signed-off-by: Alex Henrie <alexhenrie24@gmail.com> Reviewed-by: Matthieu Moy <Matthieu.Moy@imag.fr> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2014-12-29bisect: parse revs before passing them to check_expected_revs()Libravatar Christian Couder1-4/+7
When running for example "git bisect bad HEAD" or "git bisect good master", the parameter passed to "git bisect (bad|good)" has to be parsed into a commit hash before checking if it is the expected commit or not. We could do that in is_expected_rev() or in check_expected_revs(), but it is already done in bisect_state(). Let's just store the hash values that result from this parsing, and then reuse them after all the parsing is done. This way we can also use a for loop over these values to call bisect_write() on them, instead of using eval.
