2018-03-14Convert find_unique_abbrev* to struct object_idLibravatar brian m. carlson1-2/+2
Convert find_unique_abbrev and find_unique_abbrev_r to each take a pointer to struct object_id. Signed-off-by: brian m. carlson <sandals@crustytoothpaste.net> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2017-10-16refs: convert peel_ref to struct object_idLibravatar brian m. carlson1-1/+1
Convert peel_ref (and its corresponding backend) to struct object_id. This transformation was done with an update to the declaration, definition, comments, and test helper and the following semantic patch: @@ expression E1, E2; @@ - peel_ref(E1, E2.hash) + peel_ref(E1, &E2) @@ expression E1, E2; @@ - peel_ref(E1, E2->hash) + peel_ref(E1, E2) Signed-off-by: brian m. carlson <sandals@crustytoothpaste.net> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2017-10-16refs: convert read_ref and read_ref_full to object_idLibravatar brian m. carlson1-1/+1
All but two of the call sites already have parameters using the hash parameter of struct object_id, so convert them to take a pointer to the struct directly. Also convert refs_read_refs_full, the underlying implementation. Signed-off-by: brian m. carlson <sandals@crustytoothpaste.net> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2017-01-23show-ref: remove a stale commentLibravatar Junio C Hamano1-4/+0
When cf0adba788 ("Store peeled refs in packed-refs file.", 2006-11-19) made the command to die with a message on error even when --quiet is passed, it left the comment to say it changed the semantics. But that kind of information belongs to the log message, not in-code comment. Besides, the behaviour after the change has been the established one for the past 10 years ;-) Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2017-01-23show-ref: remove dead `if (verify)' checkLibravatar Vladimir Panteleev1-3/+0
As show_ref() is only ever called on the path where --verify is not specified, `verify' can never possibly be true here. Signed-off-by: Vladimir Panteleev <git@thecybershadow.net> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2017-01-23show-ref: detect dangling refs under --verify as wellLibravatar Vladimir Panteleev1-8/+8
Move detection of dangling refs into show_one(), so that they are detected when --verify is present as well as when it is absent. Signed-off-by: Vladimir Panteleev <git@thecybershadow.net> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2017-01-23show-ref: move --quiet handling into show_one()Libravatar Vladimir Panteleev1-5/+4
Do the same with --quiet as was done with -d, to remove the need to perform this check at show_one()'s call site from the --verify branch. Signed-off-by: Vladimir Panteleev <git@thecybershadow.net> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2017-01-23show-ref: allow -d to work with --verifyLibravatar Vladimir Panteleev1-11/+12
Move handling of -d into show_one(), so that it takes effect when --verify is present as well as when it is absent. This is useful when the user wishes to avoid the costly iteration of refs. Signed-off-by: Vladimir Panteleev <git@thecybershadow.net> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2017-01-23show-ref: accept HEAD with --verifyLibravatar Vladimir Panteleev1-1/+1
Previously, when --verify was specified, show-ref would use a separate code path which did not handle HEAD and treated it as an invalid ref. Thus, "git show-ref --verify HEAD" (where "--verify" is used because the user is not interested in seeing refs/remotes/origin/HEAD) did not work as expected. Instead of insisting that the input begins with "refs/", allow "HEAD" as well in the codepath that handles "--verify", so that all valid full refnames including HEAD are passed to the same output machinery. 2015-11-20show-ref: stop using PARSE_OPT_NO_INTERNAL_HELPLibravatar René Scharfe1-11/+1
The flag PARSE_OPT_NO_INTERNAL_HELP is set to allow overriding the option -h, except when it's the only one given. This is the default behavior now, so remove the flag and the hand-rolled --help-all handling. The internal --help-all handler now actually shows hidden options, i.e. -h in this case. 2015-10-16usage: do not insist that standard input must come from a fileLibravatar Junio C Hamano1-1/+1
The synopsys text and the usage string of subcommands that read list of things from the standard input are often shown like this: git gostak [--distim] < <list-of-doshes> This is problematic in a number of ways: * The way to use these commands is more often to feed them the output from another command, not feed them from a file. * Manual pages outside Git, commands that operate on the data read from the standard input, e.g "sort", "grep", "sed", etc., are not described with such a "< redirection-from-file" in their synopsys text. Our doing so introduces inconsistency. * We do not insist on where the output should go, by saying git gostak [--distim] < <list-of-doshes> > <output> * As it is our convention to enclose placeholders inside <braket>, the redirection operator followed by a placeholder filename becomes very hard to read, both in the documentation and in the help text. Let's clean them all up, after making sure that the documentation clearly describes the modes that take information from the standard input and what kind of things are expected on the input. 2015-05-25each_ref_fn: change to take an object_id parameterLibravatar Michael Haggerty1-3/+8
Change typedef each_ref_fn to take a "const struct object_id *oid" parameter instead of "const unsigned char *sha1". To aid this transition, implement an adapter that can be used to wrap old-style functions matching the old typedef, which is now called "each_ref_sha1_fn"), and make such functions callable via the new interface. This requires the old function and its cb_data to be wrapped in a "struct each_ref_fn_sha1_adapter", and that object to be used as the cb_data for an adapter function, each_ref_fn_adapter(). This is an enormous diff, but most of it consists of simple, mechanical changes to the sites that call any of the "for_each_ref" family of functions. Subsequent to this change, the call sites can be rewritten one by one to use the new interface. 2015-01-14standardize usage info string formatLibravatar Alex Henrie1-1/+1
This patch puts the usage info strings that were not already in docopt- like format into docopt-like format, which will be a litle easier for end users and a lot easier for translators. Changes include: - Placing angle brackets around fill-in-the-blank parameters - Putting dashes in multiword parameter names - Adding spaces to [-f|--foobar] to make [-f | --foobar] - Replacing <foobar>* with [<foobar>...] Signed-off-by: Alex Henrie <alexhenrie24@gmail.com> Reviewed-by: Matthieu Moy <Matthieu.Moy@imag.fr> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2013-12-05replace {pre,suf}fixcmp() with {starts,ends}_with()Libravatar Christian Couder1-3/+3
Leaving only the function definitions and declarations so that any new topic in flight can still make use of the old functions, replace existing uses of the prefixcmp() and suffixcmp() with new API functions. The change can be recreated by mechanically applying this: $ git grep -l -e prefixcmp -e suffixcmp -- \*.c | grep -v strbuf\\.c | xargs perl -pi -e ' s|!prefixcmp\(|starts_with\(|g; s|prefixcmp\(|!starts_with\(|g; s|!suffixcmp\(|ends_with\(|g; s|suffixcmp\(|!ends_with\(|g; ' on the result of preparatory changes in this series. 2013-08-05Replace deprecated OPT_BOOLEAN by OPT_BOOLLibravatar Stefan Beller1-5/+5
This task emerged from b04ba2bb (parse-options: deprecate OPT_BOOLEAN, 2011-09-27). All occurrences of the respective variables have been reviewed and none of them relied on the counting up mechanism, but all of them were using the variable as a true boolean. This patch does not change semantics of any command intentionally. Signed-off-by: Stefan Beller <stefanbeller@googlemail.com> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2013-08-05Remove deprecated OPTION_BOOLEAN for parsing argumentsLibravatar Stefan Beller1-3/+2
As of b04ba2bb4 OPTION_BOOLEAN was deprecated. This commit removes all occurrences of OPTION_BOOLEAN. In b04ba2bb4 Junio suggested to replace it with either OPTION_SET_INT or OPTION_COUNTUP instead. However a pattern, which occurred often with the OPTION_BOOLEAN was a hidden boolean parameter. So I defined OPT_HIDDEN_BOOL as an additional possible parse option in parse-options.h to make life easy. The OPT_HIDDEN_BOOL was used in checkout, clone, commit, show-ref. The only exception, where there was need to fiddle with OPTION_SET_INT was log and notes. However in these two files there is also a pattern, so we could think of introducing OPT_NONEG_BOOL. 2013-07-22Merge branch 'db/show-ref-head'Libravatar Junio C Hamano1-2/+6
The "--head" option to "git show-ref" was only to add "HEAD" to the list of candidate refs to be filtered by the usual rules (e.g. "--heads" that only show refs under refs/heads). Change the meaning of the option to always show "HEAD" regardless of what filtering will be applied to any other ref (this is a backward incompatible change, so I may need to add an entry to the Release Notes). * db/show-ref-head: show-ref: make --head always show the HEAD ref
2013-07-17show-ref: make --head always show the HEAD refLibravatar Doug Bell1-2/+6
The docs seem to say that doing git show-ref --head --tags would show both the HEAD ref and all the tag refs. However, doing both --head and either of --tags or --heads would filter out the HEAD ref. Also update the documentation to describe the new behavior and add tests for the show-ref command. [jc: Doug did proofread the tests, but it was done by me and bugs in it are mine]. 2012-10-25Merge branch 'jk/peel-ref'Libravatar Jeff King1-20/+3
Speeds up "git upload-pack" (what is invoked by "git fetch" on the other side of the connection) by reducing the cost to advertise the branches and tags that are available in the repository. * jk/peel-ref: upload-pack: use peel_ref for ref advertisements peel_ref: check object type before loading peel_ref: do not return a null sha1 peel_ref: use faster deref_tag_noverify
2012-10-04peel_ref: do not return a null sha1Libravatar Jeff King1-20/+3
The idea of the peel_ref function is to dereference tag objects recursively until we hit a non-tag, and return the sha1. Conceptually, it should return 0 if it is successful (and fill in the sha1), or -1 if there was nothing to peel. However, the current behavior is much more confusing. For a regular loose ref, the behavior is as described above. But there is an optimization to reuse the peeled-ref value for a ref that came from a packed-refs file. If we have such a ref, we return its peeled value, even if that peeled value is null (indicating that we know the ref definitely does _not_ peel). It might seem like such information is useful to the caller, who would then know not to bother loading and trying to peel the object. Except that they should not bother loading and trying to peel the object _anyway_, because that fallback is already handled by peel_ref. In other words, the whole point of calling this function is that it handles those details internally, and you either get a sha1, or you know that it is not peel-able. This patch catches the null sha1 case internally and converts it into a -1 return value (i.e., there is nothing to peel). This simplifies callers, which do not need to bother checking themselves. Two callers are worth noting: - in pack-objects, a comment indicates that there is a difference between non-peelable tags and unannotated tags. But that is not the case (before or after this patch). Whether you get a null sha1 has to do with internal details of how peel_ref operated. - in show-ref, if peel_ref returns a failure, the caller tries to decide whether to try peeling manually based on whether the REF_ISPACKED flag is set. But this doesn't make any sense. If the flag is set, that does not necessarily mean the ref came from a packed-refs file with the "peeled" extension. But it doesn't matter, because even if it didn't, there's no point in trying to peel it ourselves, as peel_ref would already have done so. In other words, the fallback peeling is guaranteed to fail. 2011-11-13Convert many resolve_ref() calls to read_ref*() and ref_exists()Libravatar Nguyễn Thái Ngọc Duy1-1/+1
resolve_ref() may return a pointer to a static buffer, which is not safe for long-term use because if another resolve_ref() call happens, the buffer may be changed. Many call sites though do not care about this buffer. They simply check if the return value is NULL or not. Convert all these call sites to new wrappers to reduce resolve_ref() calls from 57 to 34. If we change resolve_ref() prototype later on to avoid passing static buffer out, this helps reduce changes. 2011-10-05Change check_ref_format() to take a flags argumentLibravatar Michael Haggerty1-1/+1
Change check_ref_format() to take a flags argument that indicates what is acceptable in the reference name (analogous to "git check-ref-format"'s "--allow-onelevel" and "--refspec-pattern"). This is more convenient for callers and also fixes a failure in the test suite (and likely elsewhere in the code) by enabling "onelevel" and "refspec-pattern" to be allowed independently of each other. Also rename check_ref_format() to check_refname_format() to make it obvious that it deals with refnames rather than references themselves. 2010-02-22Move 'builtin-*' into a 'builtin/' subdirectoryLibravatar Linus Torvalds1-0/+249
This shrinks the top-level directory a bit, and makes it much more pleasant to use auto-completion on the thing. Instead of [torvalds@nehalem git]$ em buil<tab> Display all 180 possibilities? (y or n) [torvalds@nehalem git]$ em builtin-sh builtin-shortlog.c builtin-show-branch.c builtin-show-ref.c builtin-shortlog.o builtin-show-branch.o builtin-show-ref.o [torvalds@nehalem git]$ em builtin-shor<tab> builtin-shortlog.c builtin-shortlog.o [torvalds@nehalem git]$ em builtin-shortlog.c you get [torvalds@nehalem git]$ em buil<tab> [type] builtin/ builtin.h [torvalds@nehalem git]$ em builtin [auto-completes to] [torvalds@nehalem git]$ em builtin/sh<tab> [type] shortlog.c shortlog.o show-branch.c show-branch.o show-ref.c show-ref.o [torvalds@nehalem git]$ em builtin/sho [auto-completes to] [torvalds@nehalem git]$ em builtin/shor<tab> [type] shortlog.c shortlog.o [torvalds@nehalem git]$ em builtin/shortlog.c which doesn't seem all that different, but not having that annoying break in "Display all 180 possibilities?" is quite a relief. NOTE! If you do this in a clean tree (no object files etc), or using an editor that has auto-completion rules that ignores '*.o' files, you won't see that annoying 'Display all 180 possibilities?' message - it will just show the choices instead. I think bash has some cut-off around 100 choices or something. So the reason I see this is that I'm using an odd editory, and thus don't have the rules to cut down on auto-completion. But you can simulate that by using 'ls' instead, or something similar. Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
