When a user checks out the upstream branch of HEAD, the upstream branch not being a local branch, and then runs "git status", like this: git clone $URL client cd client git checkout @{u} git status no status is printed, but instead an error message: fatal: HEAD does not point to a branch (This error message when running "git branch" persists even after checking out other things - it only stops after checking out a branch.) This is because "git status" reads the reflog when determining the "HEAD detached" message, and thus attempts to DWIM "@{u}", but that doesn't work because HEAD no longer points to a branch. Therefore, when calculating the status of a worktree, tolerate dangling marks. This is done by adding an additional parameter to dwim_ref() and repo_dwim_ref(). There are many functions in commit.h that are more related to shallow repositories than they are to any sort of generic commit machinery. Likely this began when there were only a few shallow-related functions, and commit.h seemed a reasonable enough place to put them. But, now there are a good number of shallow-related functions, and placing them all in 'commit.h' doesn't make sense. This patch extracts a 'shallow.h', which takes all of the declarations from 'commit.h' for functions which already exist in 'shallow.c'. We will bring the remaining shallow-related functions defined in 'commit.c' in a subsequent patch. For now, move only the ones that already are implemented in 'shallow.c', and update the necessary includes. Returning a shared buffer invites very subtle bugs due to reentrancy or multi-threading, as demonstrated by the previous patch. There was an unfinished effort to abolish this [1]. Let's finally rid of `real_path()`, using `strbuf_realpath()` instead. This patch uses a local `strbuf` for most places where `real_path()` was previously called. However, two places return the value of `real_path()` to the caller. 2019-11-20rev-parse: make --show-toplevel without a worktree an errorLibravatar Jeff King1-0/+2
Ever since it was introduced in 7cceca5ccc (Add 'git rev-parse --show-toplevel' option., 2010-01-12), the --show-toplevel option has treated a missing working tree as a quiet success: it neither prints a toplevel path, but nor does it report any kind of error. While a caller could distinguish this case by looking for an empty response, the behavior is rather confusing. We're better off complaining that there is no working tree, as other internal commands would do in similar cases (e.g., "git status" or any builtin with NEED_WORK_TREE set would just die()). So let's do the same here. While we're at it, let's clarify the documentation and add some tests, both for the new behavior and for the more mundane case (which was not covered). Add an option to print the object format used for input, output, or storage. This allows shell scripts to discover the hash algorithm in use. Since the transition plan allows for multiple input algorithms, document that we may provide multiple results for input, and the format that the results may take. While we don't support this now, documenting it early means that script authors can future-proof their scripts for when we do. We probably will add repo_get_oid() at some point and limit the use of get_oid() in builtin/ instead of forcing all get_oid() call sites to carry struct repository. Commits 2122f8b963d4 ("rev-parse: Add support for the ^! and ^@ syntax", 2008-07-26) and 3dd4e7320d ("Teach rev-parse the ... syntax.", 2006-07-04) taught rev-parse new syntax, and used lookup_commit_reference() as part of their logic. Neither usage checked the returned commit to see if it was non-NULL before using it. Check for NULL and ensure an appropriate error is reported to the user. Currently, rev-parse only interprets a space ' ' character as the delimiter between the option spec and the help text. So if a tab character is placed between the option spec and the help text, it will be interpreted as part of the long option name or as part of the arg hint. If it is interpreted as part of the long option name, then rev-parse will produce what will be interpreted as multiple arguments on the command line. For example, the following option spec (note: there is a <tab> between "frotz" and "enable"): frotz enable frotzing will produce the following set expression when --frotz is used: set -- --frotz -- instead of this: set -- --frotz enable -- Mark t1502.2 as fixed. When searching for flag characters in the option spec, we should ensure the search stays within the bounds of the option spec and does not enter the help text portion of the spec. So when we find the boundary white space marking the start of the help text, let's mark it with a nul character. Then when we search for flag characters starting from the beginning of the string we'll stop at the nul and won't enter the help text. Now, the following option spec: exclame this does something! will produce this 'set' expression when --exclame is specified: set -- --exclame -- instead of this one: set -- --exclame this does something -- Mark t1502.4 and t1502.5 as fixed. Using for_each_ref_in() with a full refname has always been a questionable practice, but it became an error with b9c8e7f2fb (prefix_ref_iterator: don't trim too much, 2017-05-22), making "git rev-parse --bisect" pretty reliably show a BUG. Commit 03df567fbf (for_each_bisect_ref(): don't trim refnames, 2017-06-18) fixed this case for revision.c, but rev-parse handles this option on its own. We can use the same solution here (and piggy-back on its test). Convert lookup_commit, lookup_commit_or_die, lookup_commit_reference, and lookup_commit_reference_gently to take struct object_id arguments. Introduce a temporary in parse_object buffer in order to convert this function. This is required since in order to convert parse_object and parse_object_buffer, lookup_commit_reference_gently and lookup_commit_or_die would need to be converted. Not introducing a temporary would therefore require that lookup_commit_or_die take a struct object_id *, but lookup_commit would take unsigned char *, leaving a confusing and hard-to-use interface. parse_object_buffer will lose this temporary in a later patch. Currently, Git's source code treats all timestamps as if they were unsigned longs. Therefore, it is okay to write "%lu" when printing them. There is a substantial problem with that, though: at least on Windows, time_t is *larger* than unsigned long, and hence we will want to switch away from the ill-specified `unsigned long` data type. So let's introduce the pseudo format "PRItime" (currently simply being defined to "lu") to make it easier to change the data type used for timestamps. We'd prefer to avoid unchecked snprintf calls because truncation can lead to unexpected results. These are all cases where truncation shouldn't ever happen, because the input to snprintf is fixed in size. That makes them candidates for xsnprintf(), but it's simpler still to just use the heap, and then nobody has to wonder if "100" is big enough. The prefix_filename() function returns a pointer to static storage, which makes it easy to use dangerously. We already fixed one buggy caller in hash-object recently, and the calls in apply.c are suspicious (I didn't dig in enough to confirm that there is a bug, but we call the function once in apply_all_patches() and then again indirectly from parse_chunk()). Let's make it harder to get wrong by allocating the return value. For simplicity, we'll do this even when the prefix is empty (and we could just return the original file pointer). That will cause us to allocate sometimes when we wouldn't otherwise need to, but this function isn't called in performance critical code-paths (and it already _might_ allocate on any given call, so a caller that cares about performance is questionable anyway). The downside is that the callers need to remember to free() the result to avoid leaking. Most of them already used xstrdup() on the result, so we know they are OK. The remainder have been converted to use free() as appropriate. I considered retaining a prefix_filename_unsafe() for cases where we know the static lifetime is OK (and handling the cleanup is awkward). This is only a handful of cases, though, and it's not worth the mental energy in worrying about whether the "unsafe" variant is OK to use in any situation. This function takes the prefix as a ptr/len pair, but in every caller the length is exactly strlen(ptr). Let's simplify the interface and just take the string. This saves callers specifying it (and in some cases handling a NULL prefix). In a handful of cases we had the length already without calling strlen, so this is technically slower. But it's not likely to matter (after all, if the prefix is non-empty we'll allocate and copy it into a buffer anyway). All of these options do the same thing "--foo" iterates over the "foo" refs, and "--foo=<glob>" does the same with a glob. We can factor this into its own function to avoid repeating ourselves. There are two subtleties to note: - the original called for_each_branch_ref(), etc, in the non-glob case. Now we will call for_each_ref_in("refs/heads/") which is exactly what for_each_branch_ref() did under the hood. - for --glob, we'll call for_each_glob_ref_in() with a NULL "prefix" argument. Which is exactly what for_each_glob_ref() was doing already. So both cases should behave identically, and it seems reasonable to assume that this will remain the same. The functions we are calling now are the more-generic ones, and the ones we are dropping are just convenience wrappers. We can't just use a bare skip_prefix() for these cases, because we need to match both the "--foo" form and the "--foo=<value>" form (and tell the difference between the two in the caller). We can wrap this in a simple helper which has two obvious callsites, and will gain some more in the next patch. Note that the error output for abbrev-ref changes slightly, as we don't keep our original "arg" pointer.
