In the codebase, there are many options which use OPTION_CALLBACK in a
plain ol' struct definition. However, we have the OPT_CALLBACK and
OPT_CALLBACK_F macros which are meant to abstract these plain struct
definitions away. These macros are useful as they semantically signal to
developers that these are just normal callback option with nothing fancy
happening.
Replace plain struct definitions of OPTION_CALLBACK with OPT_CALLBACK or
OPT_CALLBACK_F where applicable. The heavy lifting was done using the
following (disgusting) shell script:
#!/bin/sh
do_replacement () {
tr '\n' '\r' |
sed -e 's/{\s*OPTION_CALLBACK,\s*\([^,]*\),\([^,]*\),\([^,]*\),\([^,]*\),\([^,]*\),\s*0,\(\s*[^[:space:]}]*\)\s*}/OPT_CALLBACK(\1,\2,\3,\4,\5,\6)/g' |
sed -e 's/{\s*OPTION_CALLBACK,\s*\([^,]*\),\([^,]*\),\([^,]*\),\([^,]*\),\([^,]*\),\([^,]*\),\(\s*[^[:space:]}]*\)\s*}/OPT_CALLBACK_F(\1,\2,\3,\4,\5,\6,\7)/g' |
tr '\r' '\n'
}
for f in $(git ls-files \*.c)
do
do_replacement <"$f" >"$f.tmp"
mv "$f.tmp" "$f"
done
The result was manually inspected and then reformatted to match the
style of the surrounding code. Finally, using
`git grep OPTION_CALLBACK \*.c`, leftover results which were not handled
by the script were manually transformed.

Rather than parse options manually, which is both difficult to
read and error prone, parse options supplied to commit-tree
using the parse-options api.
It was discovered that the --no-gpg-sign option was documented
but not implemented in commit 70ddbd7767 (commit-tree: add missing
--gpg-sign flag, 2019-01-19), and the existing implementation
would attempt to translate the option as a tree oid. It was also
suggested earlier in commit 55ca3f99ae (commit-tree: add and document
--no-gpg-sign, 2013-12-13) that commit-tree should be migrated to
utilize the parse-options api, which could help prevent mistakes
like this in the future. Hence this change.
Also update the documentation to better describe that mixing
`-m` and `-F` options will correctly compose commit log messages in the
order in which the options are given.
In the process, mark various strings for translation.

Add a repository argument to allow callers of lookup_commit to be more
specific about which repository to handle. This is a small mechanical
change; it doesn't change the implementation to handle repositories
other than the_repository yet.
As with the previous commits, use a macro to catch callers passing a
repository other than the_repository at compile time.

This should make these functions easier to find and cache.h less
overwhelming to read.
In particular, this moves:
- read_object_file
- oid_object_info
- write_object_file
As a result, most of the codebase needs to #include object-store.h.
In this patch the #include is only added to files that would fail to
compile otherwise. It would be better to #include wherever
identifiers from the header are used. That can happen later
when we have better tooling for it.

Unlike "git commit-tree < file", "git commit-tree -F file" did not
pass the contents of the file verbatim and instead completed an
incomplete line at the end, if exists. The latter has been updated
to match the behaviour of the former.

"git commit-tree -F <file>", unlike "cat <file> | git
commit-tree" (i.e. feeding the same contents from the standard
input), added a missing final newline when the input ended in an
incomplete line.
Correct this inconsistency by leaving the incomplete line as-is,
as erring on the side of not touching the input is preferrable
and expected for a plumbing command like "commit-tree".

Convert lookup_commit, lookup_commit_or_die,
lookup_commit_reference, and lookup_commit_reference_gently to take
struct object_id arguments.
Introduce a temporary in parse_object buffer in order to convert this
function. This is required since in order to convert parse_object and
parse_object_buffer, lookup_commit_reference_gently and
lookup_commit_or_die would need to be converted. Not introducing a
temporary would therefore require that lookup_commit_or_die take a
struct object_id *, but lookup_commit would take unsigned char *,
leaving a confusing and hard-to-use interface.
parse_object_buffer will lose this temporary in a later patch.

"git commit-tree" plumbing command required the user to always sign
its result when the user sets the commit.gpgsign configuration
variable, which was an ancient mistake. Rework "git rebase" that
relied on this mistake so that it reads commit.gpgsign and pass (or
not pass) the -S option to "git commit-tree" to keep the end-user
expectation the same, while teaching "git commit-tree" to ignore
the configuration variable. This will stop requiring the users to
sign commit objects used internally as an implementation detail of
"git stash".
* jc/commit-tree-ignore-commit-gpgsign:
commit-tree: do not pay attention to commit.gpgsign
|
|
ba3c69a9 (commit: teach --gpg-sign option, 2011-10-05) introduced a
"signed commit" by teaching the --[no]-gpg-sign option and the
commit.gpgsign configuration variable to various commands that
create commits.
Teaching these to "git commit" and "git merge", both of which are
end-user facing Porcelain commands, was perfectly fine. Allowing
the plumbing "git commit-tree" to suddenly change the behaviour to
surprise the scripts by paying attention to commit.gpgsign was not.
Among the in-tree scripts, filter-branch, quiltimport, rebase and
stash are the commands that run "commit-tree". If any of these
wants to allow users to always sign every single commit, they should
offer their own configuration (e.g. "filterBranch.gpgsign") with an
option to disable signing (e.g. "git filter-branch --no-gpgsign").
Ignoring commit.gpgsign option _obviously_ breaks the backward
compatibility, but it is easy to follow the standard pattern in
scripts to honor whatever configuration variable they choose to
follow. E.g.
case $(git config --bool commit.gpgsign) in
true) sign=-S ;;
*) sign= ;;
esac &&
git commit-tree $sign ...whatever other args...
Do so to make sure that "git rebase" keeps paying attention to the
configuration variable, which unfortunately is a documented mistake.

The synopsys text and the usage string of subcommands that read list
of things from the standard input are often shown like this:
git gostak [--distim] < <list-of-doshes>
This is problematic in a number of ways:
* The way to use these commands is more often to feed them the
output from another command, not feed them from a file.
* Manual pages outside Git, commands that operate on the data read
from the standard input, e.g "sort", "grep", "sed", etc., are not
described with such a "< redirection-from-file" in their synopsys
text. Our doing so introduces inconsistency.
* We do not insist on where the output should go, by saying
git gostak [--distim] < <list-of-doshes> > <output>
* As it is our convention to enclose placeholders inside <braket>,
the redirection operator followed by a placeholder filename
becomes very hard to read, both in the documentation and in the
help text.
Let's clean them all up, after making sure that the documentation
clearly describes the modes that take information from the standard
input and what kind of things are expected on the input.

While strbufs are pretty common throughout our code, it is
more flexible for functions to take a pointer/len pair than
a strbuf. It's easy to turn a strbuf into such a pair (by
dereferencing its members), but less easy to go the other
way (you can strbuf_attach, but that has implications about
memory ownership).
This patch teaches commit_tree (and its associated callers
and sub-functions) to take such a pair for the commit
message rather than a strbuf. This makes passing the buffer
around slightly more verbose, but means we can get rid of
some dangerous strbuf_attach calls in the next patch.

Commit ba3c69a9 (commit: teach --gpg-sign option, 2011-10-05) added the
-S option but documented it in the command usage without indicating that
the value is optional and forgot to mention it in the manpage. Later
commit 098bbdc3 (Add -S, --gpg-sign option to manpage of "git commit",
2012-10-21) documented the option in the porcelain manpage.
Use wording from the porcelain manpage to document the option in the
plumbing manpage. Also update the commit-tree usage summary to indicate
that the -S value is optional to be consistent with the manpage and with
the implementation.

This uses the gpg-interface.[ch] to allow signing the commit, i.e.
$ git commit --gpg-sign -m foo
You need a passphrase to unlock the secret key for
user: "Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>"

The lines of GPG detached signature are placed in a new multi-line header
field, instead of tucking the signature block at the end of the commit log
message text (similar to how signed tag is done), for multiple reasons:
- The signature won't clutter output from "git log" and friends if it is
in the extra header. If we place it at the end of the log message, we
would need to teach "git log" and friends to strip the signature block
with an option.
- Teaching new versions of "git log" and "gitk" to optionally verify and
show signatures is cleaner if we structurally know where the signature
block is (instead of scanning in the commit log message).
- The signature needs to be stripped upon various commit rewriting
operations, e.g. rebase, filter-branch, etc. They all already ignore
unknown headers, but if we place signature in the log message, all of
these tools (and third-party tools) also need to learn how a signature
block would look like.
- When we added the optional encoding header, all the tools (both in tree
and third-party) that acts on the raw commit object should have been
fixed to ignore headers they do not understand, so it is not like that
new header would be more likely to break than extra text in the commit.
A commit made with the above sample sequence would look like this:
$ git cat-file commit HEAD

Until now, this has been part of the commit-tree builtin.
However, it is already used by other builtins (like commit,
merge, and notes), and it would be useful to access it from
library code.
The check_valid helper has to come along, too, but is given
a more library-ish name of "assert_sha1_type".
Otherwise, the code is unchanged. There are still a few
rough edges for a library function, like printing the utf8
warning to stderr, but we can address those if and when they
come up as inappropriate.

builtin-shortlog.c builtin-show-branch.c builtin-show-ref.c

[torvalds@nehalem git]$ em builtin-shor<tab>
builtin-shortlog.c builtin-shortlog.o
[torvalds@nehalem git]$ em builtin-shortlog.c

[torvalds@nehalem git]$ em builtin [auto-completes to]
[torvalds@nehalem git]$ em builtin/sh<tab> [type]

[torvalds@nehalem git]$ em builtin/shor<tab> [type]
shortlog.c shortlog.o
[torvalds@nehalem git]$ em builtin/shortlog.c
which doesn't seem all that different, but not having that annoying
break in "Display all 180 possibilities?" is quite a relief.
NOTE! If you do this in a clean tree (no object files etc), or using an
editor that has auto-completion rules that ignores '*.o' files, you
won't see that annoying 'Display all 180 possibilities?' message - it
will just show the choices instead. I think bash has some cut-off
around 100 choices or something.
So the reason I see this is that I'm using an odd editory, and thus
don't have the rules to cut down on auto-completion. But you can
simulate that by using 'ls' instead, or something similar.
