2020-04-28Use OPT_CALLBACK and OPT_CALLBACK_FLibravatar Denton Liu1-6/+6
In the codebase, there are many options which use OPTION_CALLBACK in a plain ol' struct definition. However, we have the OPT_CALLBACK and OPT_CALLBACK_F macros which are meant to abstract these plain struct definitions away. These macros are useful as they semantically signal to developers that these are just normal callback option with nothing fancy happening. Replace plain struct definitions of OPTION_CALLBACK with OPT_CALLBACK or OPT_CALLBACK_F where applicable. The heavy lifting was done using the following (disgusting) shell script: #!/bin/sh do_replacement () { tr '\n' '\r' | sed -e 's/{\s*OPTION_CALLBACK,\s*\([^,]*\),\([^,]*\),\([^,]*\),\([^,]*\),\([^,]*\),\s*0,\(\s*[^[:space:]}]*\)\s*}/OPT_CALLBACK(\1,\2,\3,\4,\5,\6)/g' | sed -e 's/{\s*OPTION_CALLBACK,\s*\([^,]*\),\([^,]*\),\([^,]*\),\([^,]*\),\([^,]*\),\([^,]*\),\(\s*[^[:space:]}]*\)\s*}/OPT_CALLBACK_F(\1,\2,\3,\4,\5,\6,\7)/g' | tr '\r' '\n' } for f in $(git ls-files \*.c) do do_replacement <"$f" >"$f.tmp" mv "$f.tmp" "$f" done The result was manually inspected and then reformatted to match the style of the surrounding code. Finally, using `git grep OPTION_CALLBACK \*.c`, leftover results which were not handled by the script were manually transformed. 2019-03-08commit-tree: utilize parse-options apiLibravatar Brandon Richardson1-72/+86
Rather than parse options manually, which is both difficult to read and error prone, parse options supplied to commit-tree using the parse-options api. It was discovered that the --no-gpg-sign option was documented but not implemented in commit 70ddbd7767 (commit-tree: add missing --gpg-sign flag, 2019-01-19), and the existing implementation would attempt to translate the option as a tree oid. It was also suggested earlier in commit 55ca3f99ae (commit-tree: add and document --no-gpg-sign, 2013-12-13) that commit-tree should be migrated to utilize the parse-options api, which could help prevent mistakes like this in the future. Hence this change. Also update the documentation to better describe that mixing `-m` and `-F` options will correctly compose commit log messages in the order in which the options are given. In the process, mark various strings for translation. Signed-off-by: Brandon Richardson <brandon1024.br@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>

2018-06-29commit: add repository argument to lookup_commitLibravatar Stefan Beller1-1/+3
Add a repository argument to allow callers of lookup_commit to be more specific about which repository to handle. This is a small mechanical change; it doesn't change the implementation to handle repositories other than the_repository yet. As with the previous commits, use a macro to catch callers passing a repository other than the_repository at compile time. 2018-05-16object-store: move object access functions to object-store.hLibravatar Stefan Beller1-0/+1
This should make these functions easier to find and cache.h less overwhelming to read. In particular, this moves: - read_object_file - oid_object_info - write_object_file As a result, most of the codebase needs to #include object-store.h. In this patch the #include is only added to files that would fail to compile otherwise. It would be better to #include wherever identifiers from the header are used. That can happen later when we have better tooling for it. Signed-off-by: Stefan Beller <sbeller@google.com> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>

2017-05-08Convert lookup_commit* to struct object_idLibravatar brian m. carlson1-1/+1
Convert lookup_commit, lookup_commit_or_die, lookup_commit_reference, and lookup_commit_reference_gently to take struct object_id arguments. Introduce a temporary in parse_object buffer in order to convert this function. This is required since in order to convert parse_object and parse_object_buffer, lookup_commit_reference_gently and lookup_commit_or_die would need to be converted. Not introducing a temporary would therefore require that lookup_commit_or_die take a struct object_id *, but lookup_commit would take unsigned char *, leaving a confusing and hard-to-use interface. parse_object_buffer will lose this temporary in a later patch. 2016-05-13Merge branch 'jc/commit-tree-ignore-commit-gpgsign'Libravatar Junio C Hamano1-4/+0
"git commit-tree" plumbing command required the user to always sign its result when the user sets the commit.gpgsign configuration variable, which was an ancient mistake. Rework "git rebase" that relied on this mistake so that it reads commit.gpgsign and pass (or not pass) the -S option to "git commit-tree" to keep the end-user expectation the same, while teaching "git commit-tree" to ignore the configuration variable. This will stop requiring the users to sign commit objects used internally as an implementation detail of "git stash". * jc/commit-tree-ignore-commit-gpgsign: commit-tree: do not pay attention to commit.gpgsign
2016-05-03commit-tree: do not pay attention to commit.gpgsignLibravatar Junio C Hamano1-4/+0
ba3c69a9 (commit: teach --gpg-sign option, 2011-10-05) introduced a "signed commit" by teaching the --[no]-gpg-sign option and the commit.gpgsign configuration variable to various commands that create commits. Teaching these to "git commit" and "git merge", both of which are end-user facing Porcelain commands, was perfectly fine. Allowing the plumbing "git commit-tree" to suddenly change the behaviour to surprise the scripts by paying attention to commit.gpgsign was not. Among the in-tree scripts, filter-branch, quiltimport, rebase and stash are the commands that run "commit-tree". If any of these wants to allow users to always sign every single commit, they should offer their own configuration (e.g. "filterBranch.gpgsign") with an option to disable signing (e.g. "git filter-branch --no-gpgsign"). Ignoring commit.gpgsign option _obviously_ breaks the backward compatibility, but it is easy to follow the standard pattern in scripts to honor whatever configuration variable they choose to follow. E.g. case $(git config --bool commit.gpgsign) in true) sign=-S ;; *) sign= ;; esac && git commit-tree $sign ...whatever other args... Do so to make sure that "git rebase" keeps paying attention to the configuration variable, which unfortunately is a documented mistake. 2015-10-16usage: do not insist that standard input must come from a fileLibravatar Junio C Hamano1-1/+1
The synopsys text and the usage string of subcommands that read list of things from the standard input are often shown like this: git gostak [--distim] < <list-of-doshes> This is problematic in a number of ways: * The way to use these commands is more often to feed them the output from another command, not feed them from a file. * Manual pages outside Git, commands that operate on the data read from the standard input, e.g "sort", "grep", "sed", etc., are not described with such a "< redirection-from-file" in their synopsys text. Our doing so introduces inconsistency. * We do not insist on where the output should go, by saying git gostak [--distim] < <list-of-doshes> > <output> * As it is our convention to enclose placeholders inside <braket>, the redirection operator followed by a placeholder filename becomes very hard to read, both in the documentation and in the help text. Let's clean them all up, after making sure that the documentation clearly describes the modes that take information from the standard input and what kind of things are expected on the input. 2014-06-12commit_tree: take a pointer/len pair rather than a const strbufLibravatar Jeff King1-2/+2
While strbufs are pretty common throughout our code, it is more flexible for functions to take a pointer/len pair than a strbuf. It's easy to turn a strbuf into such a pair (by dereferencing its members), but less easy to go the other way (you can strbuf_attach, but that has implications about memory ownership). This patch teaches commit_tree (and its associated callers and sub-functions) to take such a pair for the commit message rather than a strbuf. This makes passing the buffer around slightly more verbose, but means we can get rid of some dangerous strbuf_attach calls in the next patch. If we place it at the end of the log message, we would need to teach "git log" and friends to strip the signature block with an option. - Teaching new versions of "git log" and "gitk" to optionally verify and show signatures is cleaner if we structurally know where the signature block is (instead of scanning in the commit log message). - The signature needs to be stripped upon various commit rewriting operations, e.g. rebase, filter-branch, etc. They all already ignore unknown headers, but if we place signature in the log message, all of these tools (and third-party tools) also need to learn how a signature block would look like. - When we added the optional encoding header, all the tools (both in tree and third-party) that acts on the raw commit object should have been fixed to ignore headers they do not understand, so it is not like that new header would be more likely to break than extra text in the commit. A commit made with the above sample sequence would look like this: $ git cat-file commit HEAD tree 3cd71d90e3db4136e5260ab54599791c4f883b9d parent b87755351a47b09cb27d6913e6e0e17e6254a4d4 author Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com> 1317862251 -0700 committer Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com> 1317862251 -0700 gpgsig -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.10 (GNU/Linux) iQIcBAABAgAGBQJOjPtrAAoJELC16IaWr+bL4TMP/RSe2Y/jYnCkds9unO5JEnfG ... =dt98 -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- foo but "git log" (unless you ask for it with --pretty=raw) output is not cluttered with the signature information. Until now, this has been part of the commit-tree builtin. However, it is already used by other builtins (like commit, merge, and notes), and it would be useful to access it from library code. NOTE! If you do this in a clean tree (no object files etc), or using an editor that has auto-completion rules that ignores '*.o' files, you won't see that annoying 'Display all 180 possibilities?' message - it will just show the choices instead. I think bash has some cut-off around 100 choices or something. So the reason I see this is that I'm using an odd editory, and thus don't have the rules to cut down on auto-completion.
