2019-02-06Merge branch 'lt/date-human'Libravatar Junio C Hamano1-0/+4
A new date format "--date=human" that morphs its output depending on how far the time is from the current time has been introduced. "--date=auto" can be used to use this new format when the output is going to the pager or to the terminal and otherwise the default format. * lt/date-human: Add `human` date format tests. Add `human` format to test-tool Add 'human' date format documentation Replace the proposed 'auto' mode with 'auto:' Add 'human' date format

2019-01-18Add 'human' date formatLibravatar Linus Torvalds1-0/+4
This adds --date=human, which skips the timezone if it matches the current time-zone, and doesn't print the whole date if that matches (ie skip printing year for dates that are "this year", but also skip the whole date itself if it's in the last few days and we can just say what weekday it was). For really recent dates (same day), use the relative date stamp, while for old dates (year doesn't match), don't bother with time and timezone. Also add 'auto' date mode, which defaults to human if we're using the pager. So you can do git config --add log.date auto and your "git log" commands will show the human-legible format unless you're scripting things. Note that this time format still shows the timezone for recent enough events (but not so recent that they show up as relative dates). You can combine it with the "-local" suffix to never show timezones for an even more simplified view. Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org> Signed-off-by: Stephen P. Portability fix for a recent update to parse-options API. * nd/show-gitcomp-compilation-fix: parse-options: fix SunCC compiler warning
2018-12-12parse-options: fix SunCC compiler warningLibravatar Nguyễn Thái Ngọc Duy1-0/+2
The compiler reports this because show_gitcomp() never actually returns a value: "parse-options.c", line 520: warning: Function has no return statement : show_gitcomp We could shut the compiler up. But instead let's not bury exit() too deep. Do the same as internal -h handling, return a special error code and handle the exit() in parse_options() (and other parse_options_step() callers) instead. 2018-11-06assert NOARG/NONEG behavior of parse-options callbacksLibravatar Jeff King1-0/+4
When we define a parse-options callback, the flags we put in the option struct must match what the callback expects. For example, a callback which does not handle the "unset" parameter should only be used with PARSE_OPT_NONEG. But since the callback and the option struct are not defined next to each other, it's easy to get this wrong (as earlier patches in this series show). Fortunately, the compiler can help us here: compiling with -Wunused-parameters can show us which callbacks ignore their "unset" parameters (and likewise, ones that ignore "arg" expect to be triggered with PARSE_OPT_NOARG). But after we've inspected a callback and determined that all of its callers use the right flags, what do we do next? We'd like to silence the compiler warning, but do so in a way that will catch any wrong calls in the future. We can do that by actually checking those variables and asserting that they match our expectations. Because this is such a common pattern, we'll introduce some helper macros. The resulting messages aren't as descriptive as we could make them, but the file/line information from BUG() is enough to identify the problem (and anyway, the point is that these should never be seen). Each of the annotated callbacks in this patch triggers -Wunused-parameters, and was manually inspected to make sure all callers use the correct options (so none of these BUGs should be triggerable). 2018-07-16blame: prefer xsnprintf to strcpy for colorsLibravatar Jeff King1-1/+3
Our color buffers are all COLOR_MAXLEN, which fits the largest possible color. So we can never overflow the buffer by copying an existing color. However, using strcpy() makes it harder to audit the code-base for calls that _are_ problems. We should use something like xsnprintf(), which shows the reader that we expect this never to fail (and provides a run-time assertion if it does, just in case). 2018-06-15blame: prevent error if range ends past end of fileLibravatar Isabella Stephens1-2/+2
If the -L option is used to specify a line range in git blame, and the end of the range is past the end of the file, git will fail with a fatal error. This commit prevents such behavior - instead we display the blame for existing lines within the specified range. Tests are amended accordingly. This commit also fixes two corner cases. Blaming -L n,-(n+1) now blames the first n lines of a file rather than from n to the end of the file. Blaming -L ,-n will be treated as -L 1,-n and blame the first line of the file, rather than blaming the whole file. 2018-05-16object-store: move object access functions to object-store.hLibravatar Stefan Beller1-0/+1
This should make these functions easier to find and cache.h less overwhelming to read. In particular, this moves: - read_object_file - oid_object_info - write_object_file As a result, most of the codebase needs to #include object-store.h. In this patch the #include is only added to files that would fail to compile otherwise. It would be better to #include wherever identifiers from the header are used. 2018-04-24builtin/blame: highlight recently changed linesLibravatar Stefan Beller1-4/+76
Choose a different color for dates and imitate a 'temperature cool down' depending upon age. Originally I had planned to have the temperature cool down dependent on the age of the project or file for example, as that might scale better, but that can be added on top of this commit, e.g. instead of giving a date, you could imagine giving a percentage that would be the linearly interpolated between now and the beginning of the file. Similarly to the previous patch, this offers the command line option '--color-by-age' to enable this mode and the config option 'color.blame.highlightrecent' to select colors. A later patch will offer a config option to select the default mode. Signed-off-by: Stefan Beller <sbeller@google.com> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2018-04-24builtin/blame: dim uninteresting metadata linesLibravatar Stefan Beller1-4/+35
When using git-blame lots of lines contain redundant information, for example in hunks that consist of multiple lines, the metadata (commit name, author, date) are repeated. A reader may not be interested in those, so offer an option to color the information that is repeated from the previous line differently. Traditionally, we use CYAN for lines that are less interesting than others (e.g. hunk header), so go with that. The command line option '--color-lines' will trigger the coloring of repeated lines, and the config option 'color.blame.colorLines' is provided to select the color. Setting the config option doesn't imply that repeated lines are colored. A later patch will introduce a config to enable this mode by default. 2018-02-07blame: tighten command line parserLibravatar Junio C Hamano1-6/+14
The command line parser of "git blame" is prepared to take an ancient odd argument order "blame <path> <rev>" in addition to the usual "blame [<rev>] <path>". It has at least two negative ramifications: - In order to tell these two apart, it checks if the last command line argument names a path in the working tree, using file_exists(). However, "blame <rev> <path>" is a request to explain each and every line in the contents of <path> stored in revision <rev> and does not need to have a working tree version of the file. A check with file_exists() is simply wrong. - To coerce that mistaken file_exists() check to work, the code calls setup_work_tree() before doing so, because the path it has is relative to the top-level of the project tree. However, "blame <rev> <path>" MUST be usable even in a bare repository, and there is no reason for letting setup_work_tree() complain and die with "This operation must be run in a work tree". To correct the former, switch to check if the last token is a revision (and if so, parse arguments using "blame <path> <rev>" rule). Correct the latter by getting rid of setup_work_tree() and file_exists() check--the only case the call to this function matters is when we are running "blame <path>" (i.e. no starting revision and asking to blame the working tree file at <path>, digging through the HEAD revision), but there is a call in setup_scoreboard() just before it calls fake_working_tree_commit(). 2017-08-19progress: simplify "delayed" progress APILibravatar Junio C Hamano1-2/+1
We used to expose the full power of the delayed progress API to the callers, so that they can specify, not just the message to show and expected total amount of work that is used to compute the percentage of work performed so far, the percent-threshold parameter P and the delay-seconds parameter N. The progress meter starts to show at N seconds into the operation only if we have not yet completed P per-cent of the total work. Most callers used either (0%, 2s) or (50%, 1s) as (P, N), but there are oddballs that chose more random-looking values like 95%. For a smoother workload, (50%, 1s) would allow us to start showing the progress meter earlier than (0%, 2s), while keeping the chance of not showing progress meter for long running operation the same as the latter. For a task that would take 2s or more to complete, it is likely that less than half of it would complete within the first second, if the workload is smooth. But for a spiky workload whose earlier part is easier, such a setting is likely to fail to show the progress meter entirely and (0%, 2s) is more appropriate. But that is merely a theory. Realistically, it is of dubious value to ask each codepath to carefully consider smoothness of their workload and specify their own setting by passing two extra parameters. Let's simplify the API by dropping both parameters and have everybody use (0%, 2s). Oh, by the way, the percent-threshold parameter and the structure member were consistently misspelled, which also is now fixed ;-) Helped-by: Jeff King <peff@peff.net> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>

2017-06-04Merge branch 'ab/c-translators-comment-style'Libravatar Junio C Hamano1-6/+9
Update the C style recommendation for notes for translators, as recent versions of gettext tools can work with our style of multi-line comments. * ab/c-translators-comment-style: C style: use standard style for "TRANSLATORS" comments
2017-05-31C style: use standard style for "TRANSLATORS" commentsLibravatar Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason1-6/+9
Change all the "TRANSLATORS: [...]" comments in the C code to use the regular Git coding style, and amend the style guide so that the example there uses that style. This custom style was necessary back in 2010 when the gettext support was initially added, and was subsequently documented in commit cbcfd4e3ea ("i18n: mention "TRANSLATORS:" marker in Documentation/CodingGuidelines", 2014-04-18). GNU xgettext hasn't had the parsing limitation that necessitated this exception for almost 3 years. Since its 0.19 release on 2014-06-02 it's been able to recognize TRANSLATOR comments in the standard Git comment syntax[1]. Usually we'd like to keep compatibility with software that's that young, but in this case literally the only person who needs to be using a gettext newer than 3 years old is Jiang Xin (the only person who runs & commits "make pot" results), so I think in this case we can make an exception. This xgettext parsing feature was added after a thread on the Git mailing list[2] which continued on the bug-gettext[3] list, but we never subsequently changed our style & styleguide, do so. There are already longstanding changes in git that use the standard comment style & have their TRANSLATORS comments extracted properly without getting the literal "*"'s mixed up in the text, as would happen before xgettext 0.19. Commit 7ff2683253 ("builtin-am: implement -i/--interactive", 2015-08-04) added one such comment, which in commit df0617bfa7 ("l10n: git.pot: v2.6.0 round 1 (123 new, 41 removed)", 2015-09-05) got picked up in the po/git.pot file with the right format, showing that Jiang already runs a modern xgettext. The xgettext parser does not handle the sort of non-standard comment style that I'm amending here in sequencer.c, but that isn't standard Git comment syntax anyway. With this change to sequencer.c & "make pot" the comment in the pot file is now correct: #. TRANSLATORS: %s will be "revert", "cherry-pick" or -#. * "rebase -i". +#. "rebase -i". 1. http://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/gettext.git/commit/?id=10af7fe6bd 2. <2ce9ec406501d112e032c8208417f8100bed04c6.1397712142.git.worldhello.net@gmail.com> (https://public-inbox.org/git/2ce9ec406501d112e032c8208417f8100bed04c6.1397712142.git.worldhello.net@gmail.com/) 3. https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-gettext/2014-04/msg00016.html Signed-off-by: Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason <avarab@gmail.com> Acked-by: Jiang Xin <worldhello.net@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
