2020-08-10Merge branch 'jk/strvec'Libravatar Junio C Hamano1-10/+10
The argv_array API is useful for not just managing argv but any "vector" (NULL-terminated array) of strings, and has seen adoption to a certain degree. It has been renamed to "strvec" to reduce the barrier to adoption. * jk/strvec: strvec: rename struct fields strvec: drop argv_array compatibility layer strvec: update documention to avoid argv_array strvec: fix indentation in renamed calls strvec: convert remaining callers away from argv_array name strvec: convert more callers away from argv_array name strvec: convert builtin/ callers away from argv_array name quote: rename sq_dequote_to_argv_array to mention strvec strvec: rename files from argv-array to strvec argv-array: rename to strvec argv-array: use size_t for count and alloc
2020-08-07bisect: introduce first-parent flagLibravatar Aaron Lipman1-1/+8
Upon seeing a merge commit when bisecting, this option may be used to follow only the first parent. In detecting regressions introduced through the merging of a branch, the merge commit will be identified as introduction of the bug and its ancestors will be ignored. This option is particularly useful in avoiding false positives when a merged branch contained broken or non-buildable commits, but the merge itself was OK. 2020-08-07cmd_bisect__helper: defer parsing no-checkout flagLibravatar Aaron Lipman1-8/+6
cmd_bisect__helper() is intended as a temporary shim layer serving as an interface for git-bisect.sh. This function and git-bisect.sh should eventually be replaced by a C implementation, cmd_bisect(), serving as an entrypoint for all "git bisect ..." shell commands: cmd_bisect() will only parse the first token following "git bisect", and dispatch the remaining args to the appropriate function ["bisect_start()", "bisect_next()", etc.]. Thus, cmd_bisect__helper() should not be responsible for parsing flags like --no-checkout. Instead, let the --no-checkout flag remain in the argv array, so it may be evaluated alongside the other options already parsed by bisect_start(). 2020-07-30strvec: rename struct fieldsLibravatar Jeff King1-2/+2
The "argc" and "argv" names made sense when the struct was argv_array, but now they're just confusing. Let's rename them to "nr" (which we use for counts elsewhere) and "v" (which is rather terse, but reads well when combined with typical variable names like "args.v"). Note that we have to update all of the callers immediately. Playing tricks with the preprocessor is hard here, because we wouldn't want to rewrite unrelated tokens. 2020-07-28strvec: fix indentation in renamed callsLibravatar Jeff King1-1/+1
Code which split an argv_array call across multiple lines, like: argv_array_pushl(&args, "one argument", "another argument", "and more", NULL); was recently mechanically renamed to use strvec, which results in mis-matched indentation like: strvec_pushl(&args, "one argument", "another argument", "and more", NULL); Let's fix these up to align the arguments with the opening paren. I did this manually by sifting through the results of: git jump grep 'strvec_.*,$' and liberally applying my editor's auto-format. Most of the changes are of the form shown above, though I also normalized a few that had originally used a single-tab indentation (rather than our usual style of aligning with the open paren). I also rewrapped a couple of obvious cases (e.g., where previously too-long lines became short enough to fit on one), but I wasn't aggressive about it. In cases broken to three or more lines, the grouping of arguments is sometimes meaningful, and it wasn't worth my time or reviewer time to ponder each case individually. 2020-07-28strvec: convert builtin/ callers away from argv_array nameLibravatar Jeff King1-6/+6
We eventually want to drop the argv_array name and just use strvec consistently. There's no particular reason we have to do it all at once, or care about interactions between converted and unconverted bits. Because of our preprocessor compat layer, the names are interchangeable to the compiler (so even a definition and declaration using different names is OK). This patch converts all of the files in builtin/ to keep the diff to a manageable size. The conversion was done purely mechanically with: git ls-files '*.c' '*.h' | xargs perl -i -pe ' s/ARGV_ARRAY/STRVEC/g; s/argv_array/strvec/g; ' and then selectively staging files with "git add builtin/". We'll deal with any indentation/style fallouts separately. Signed-off-by: Jeff King <peff@peff.net> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2020-07-28strvec: rename files from argv-array to strvecLibravatar Jeff King1-1/+1
This requires updating #include lines across the code-base, but that's all fairly mechanical, and was done with: git ls-files '*.c' '*.h' | xargs perl -i -pe 's/argv-array.h/strvec.h/' Signed-off-by: Jeff King <peff@peff.net> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>

2020-06-08Merge branch 'cb/bisect-helper-parser-fix'Libravatar Junio C Hamano1-4/+9

2020-05-24bisect--helper: avoid segfault with bad syntax in `start --term-*`Libravatar Carlo Marcelo Arenas Belón1-4/+9
06f5608c14 (bisect--helper: `bisect_start` shell function partially in C, 2019-01-02) adds a lax parser for `git bisect start` which could result in a segfault under a bad syntax call for start with custom terms. Detect if there are enough arguments left in the command line to use for --term-{old,good,new,bad} and abort with the same syntax error the original implementation will show if not. While at it, remove an unnecessary (and incomplete) check for unknown arguments and make sure to add a test to avoid regressions. 2020-02-19bisect: libify `check_good_are_ancestors_of_bad` and its dependentsLibravatar Pranit Bauva1-1/+10
Since we want to get rid of git-bisect.sh, it would be necessary to convert those exit() calls to return statements so that errors can be reported. Emulate try catch in C by converting `exit(<positive-value>)` to `return <negative-value>`. Follow POSIX conventions to return <negative-value> to indicate error. Code that turns BISECT_INTERNAL_SUCCESS_MERGE_BASE (-11) to BISECT_OK (0) from `check_good_are_ancestors_of_bad()` has been moved to `cmd_bisect__helper()`. 2020-02-19bisect--helper: return error codes from `cmd_bisect__helper()`Libravatar Pranit Bauva1-1/+1
Since we want to get rid of git-bisect.sh, it would be necessary to convert bisect.c exit() calls to return statements so that errors can be reported. Let's prepare for that by making it possible to return different error codes than just 0 or 1. Different error codes might enable a bisecting script calling the bisect command that uses this function to do different things depending on the exit status of the bisect command. 2019-01-02bisect--helper: `bisect_start` shell function partially in CLibravatar Pranit Bauva1-2/+228
Reimplement the `bisect_start` shell function partially in C and add `bisect-start` subcommand to `git bisect--helper` to call it from git-bisect.sh . The last part is not converted because it calls another shell function. `bisect_start` shell function will be completed after the `bisect_next` shell function is ported in C. Using `--bisect-start` subcommand is a temporary measure to port shell function in C so as to use the existing test suite. As more functions are ported, this subcommand will be retired and will be called by some other methods. Also introduce a method `bisect_append_log_quoted` to keep things short and crisp. Note that we are a bit lax about command-line parsing because the helper is not supposed to be called by the user directly (but only from the git bisect script). Using `--bisect-terms` subcommand is a temporary measure to port shell function in C so as to use the existing test suite. As more functions are ported, this subcommand will be retired but its implementation will be called by some other methods. Also use error() to report "no terms defined" and accordingly change the test in t6030. We need to use PARSE_OPT_KEEP_UNKNOWN here to allow for parameters that look like options (e.g --term-good) but should not be parsed by cmd_bisect__helper(). This change is safe because all other cmdmodes have strict argc checks already. Reimplement the `check_and_set_terms` shell function in C and add `check-and-set-terms` subcommand to `git bisect--helper` to call it from git-bisect.sh Using `--check-and-set-terms` subcommand is a temporary measure to port shell function in C so as to use the existing test suite. As more functions are ported, this subcommand will be retired but its implementation will be called by some other methods. check_and_set_terms() sets and receives two global variables namely TERM_GOOD and TERM_BAD in the shell script. Luckily the file BISECT_TERMS also contains the value of those variables so its appropriate to evoke the method get_terms() after calling the subcommand so that it retrieves the value of TERM_GOOD and TERM_BAD from the file BISECT_TERMS. The two global variables are passed as arguments to the subcommand. Reimplement the `bisect_write` shell function in C and add a `bisect-write` subcommand to `git bisect--helper` to call it from git-bisect.sh Using `--bisect-write` subcommand is a temporary measure to port shell function in C so as to use the existing test suite. As more functions are ported, this subcommand will be retired but its implementation will be called by some other methods. Note: bisect_write() uses two variables namely TERM_GOOD and TERM_BAD from the global shell script thus we need to pass it to the subcommand using the arguments. We then store them in a struct bisect_terms and pass the memory address around functions. Add a log_commit() helper function to write the contents of the commit message header to a file which will be re-used in future parts of the code as well. Also introduce a function free_terms() to free the memory of `struct bisect_terms` and set_terms() to set the values of members in `struct bisect_terms`. This shrinks the top-level directory a bit, and makes it much more pleasant to use auto-completion on the thing. Instead of [torvalds@nehalem git]$ em buil<tab> Display all 180 possibilities? (y or n) [torvalds@nehalem git]$ em builtin-sh builtin-shortlog.c builtin-show-branch.c builtin-show-ref.c builtin-shortlog.o builtin-show-branch.o builtin-show-ref.o [torvalds@nehalem git]$ em builtin-shor<tab> builtin-shortlog.c builtin-shortlog.o [torvalds@nehalem git]$ em builtin-shortlog.c you get [torvalds@nehalem git]$ em buil<tab> [type] builtin/ builtin.h [torvalds@nehalem git]$ em builtin [auto-completes to] [torvalds@nehalem git]$ em builtin/sh<tab> [type] shortlog.c shortlog.o show-branch.c show-branch.o show-ref.c show-ref.o [torvalds@nehalem git]$ em builtin/sho [auto-completes to] [torvalds@nehalem git]$ em builtin/shor<tab> [type] shortlog.c shortlog.o [torvalds@nehalem git]$ em builtin/shortlog.c which doesn't seem all that different, but not having that annoying break in "Display all 180 possibilities?" is quite a relief. NOTE! If you do this in a clean tree (no object files etc), or using an editor that has auto-completion rules that ignores '*.o' files, you won't see that annoying 'Display all 180 possibilities?' message - it will just show the choices instead. I think bash has some cut-off around 100 choices or something. So the reason I see this is that I'm using an odd editory, and thus don't have the rules to cut down on auto-completion. But you can simulate that by using 'ls' instead, or something similar. Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
