2007-11-09add a howto document about corrupted blob recoveryLibravatar Nicolas Pitre1-0/+134

2007-09-18Fixed update-hook example allow-users format.Libravatar Väinö Järvelä1-4/+4
The example provided with the update-hook-example does not work on either bash 2.05b.0(1)-release nor 3.1.17(1)-release. The matcher did not match the lines that it advertised to match, such as: refs/heads/bw/ linus refs/heads/tmp/* * In POSIX 1003.2 regular expressions, the star (*), is not an wildcard meaning "match everything", it matches 0 or more matches of the atom preceding it. So to match "refs/heads/bw/topic-branch", the matcher should be written as "refs/heads/bw/.*" to match "refs/heads/bw/" and everything after it. Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2007-06-07War on whitespaceLibravatar Junio C Hamano6-28/+21
This uses "git-apply --whitespace=strip" to fix whitespace errors that have crept in to our source files over time. There are a few files that need to have trailing whitespaces (most notably, test vectors). The results still passes the test, and build result in Documentation/ area is unchanged. 2007-05-17user-manual: move howto/using-topic-branches into manualLibravatar J. Bruce Fields1-296/+0
Move howto/using-topic-branches into the user manual as an example for the "sharing development" chapter. While we're at it, remove some discussion that's covered in earlier chapters, modernize somewhat (use separate-heads setup, remotes, replace "whatchanged" by "log", etc.), and replace syntax we'd need to explain by syntax we've already covered (e.g. old..new instead of new ^old). The result may not really describe what Tony Luck does any more.... Hope that's not annoying. Cc: Tony Luck <tony.luck@intel.com> Signed-off-by: "J. Bruce Fields" <bfields@citi.umich.edu>
2007-05-17user-manual: move howto/make-dist.txt into user manualLibravatar J. Bruce Fields1-52/+0
There seems to be a perception that the howto's are bit-rotting a little. The manual might be a more visible location for some of them, and make-dist.txt seems like a good candidate to include as an example in the manual. For now, incorporate much of it verbatim. Later we may want to update the example a bit. Signed-off-by: "J. Bruce Fields" <bfields@citi.umich.edu>
2007-05-17Documentation: remove howto's now incorporated into manualLibravatar J. Bruce Fields2-174/+0
These two howto's have both been copied into the manual. I'd rather not maintain both versions if possible, and I think the user-manual will be more visible than the howto directory. (Though I wouldn't mind some duplication if people really like having them here.) Signed-off-by: "J. Bruce Fields" <bfields@citi.umich.edu>
2007-03-19Add a HOWTO for setting up a standalone git daemonLibravatar Johannes Schindelin1-0/+52
Setting up a git-daemon came up the other day on IRC, and it is slightly non trivial for the uninitiated. Signed-off-by: Johannes Schindelin <johannes.schindelin@gmx.de> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <junkio@cox.net>

Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <junkio@cox.net>
2007-01-17git-format-patch: the default suffix is now .patch, not .txtLibravatar Junio C Hamano1-1/+1
Editors often give easier handling of patch files if the filename ends with .patch, so use it instead of .txt. Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <junkio@cox.net>
2007-01-12use 'init' instead of 'init-db' for shipped docs and toolsLibravatar Nicolas Pitre1-1/+1
While 'init-db' still is and probably will always remain a valid git command for obvious backward compatibility reasons, it would be a good idea to move shipped tools and docs to using 'init' instead. Signed-off-by: Nicolas Pitre <nico@cam.org> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <junkio@cox.net>

This howto consists of a footnote from an email by JC to the git mailing list (<7vfyms0x4p.fsf@assigned-by-dhcp.cox.net>). Signed-off-by: Kent Engstrom <kent@lysator.liu.se> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <junkio@cox.net>
2006-01-20update using-topic-branchesLibravatar Luck, Tony1-1/+9
Update documentation to warn users not to create noise in then Linux history by creating pointless "Auto-update from upstream" merge commits. Signed-off-by: Tony Luck <tony.luck@intel.com> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <junkio@cox.net>
2006-01-15show-branch: make the current branch and merge commits stand out.Libravatar Junio C Hamano1-12/+12
This changes the character used to mark the commits that is on the branch from '+' to '*' for the current branch, to make it stand out. Also we show '-' for merge commits. When you have a handful branches with relatively long diversion, it is easier to see which one is the current branch this way. Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <junkio@cox.net>

2005-12-19Documentation: stdout of update-hook is connected to /dev/nullLibravatar Junio C Hamano1-2/+6
Mention that update-hook does not emit its stdout to the sender. Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <junkio@cox.net>
2005-12-19howto/using-topic-branches: Recommend public URL git://git.kernel.org/Libravatar Junio C Hamano1-3/+2
Recommending this means subsystem maintainers do not have to log-in just to resync with upstream. Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <junkio@cox.net>
2005-12-14Documentation: topic branchesLibravatar Junio C Hamano1-3/+4
Recommend git over ssh direct to master.kernel.org, instead of going over rsync to public machines, since this is meant to be a procedure for kernel subsystem maintainers. Also fix an obvious typo. Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <junkio@cox.net>
2005-12-05Documentation: shared repository management in tutorial.Libravatar Junio C Hamano1-69/+136
The branch policy script I outlined was improved and polished by Carl and posted on the list twice since then. It is a shame not to pick it up, so replace the original outline in howto/update-hook-example.txt with the latest from Carl. Also talk about setting up git-shell to allow git-push/git-fetch only SSH access to a shared repository host in the tutorial. Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <junkio@cox.net>
2005-11-19Documentation: add hooks/update example.Libravatar Junio C Hamano1-0/+105

2005-11-19Documentation: rebase-from-internal minor updates.Libravatar Junio C Hamano1-5/+2
git-commit -v flag has been the default for quite some time, so do not mention it. Also a typofix. Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <junkio@cox.net>
2005-11-08Update howto using-topic-branchesLibravatar Luck, Tony1-7/+7
"git resolve" is being deprecated in favour of "git merge". Update the documentation to reflect this. Signed-off-by: Tony Luck <tony.luck@intel.com> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <junkio@cox.net>
2005-11-07Add bug isolation howto, scraped from Linus.Libravatar Jon Loeliger1-0/+65

2005-11-07Documentation update: use git branch -d foo where applicableLibravatar Kai Ruemmler3-3/+4
This updates documentation to use git branch -d foo in favour of rm .git/refs/heads/foo Signed-off-by: Kai Ruemmler <kai.ruemmler@gmx.net> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <junkio@cox.net>
2005-09-22Retire rev-tree.Libravatar Junio C Hamano1-2/+2
Some old scripts might still use git-rev-tree, but it really is clearly inferior in every way to git-rev-list that such scripts should be fixed anyway. Fixing them should be pretty easy. Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <junkio@cox.net>
2005-09-07Big tool rename.Libravatar Junio C Hamano3-4/+4
As promised, this is the "big tool rename" patch. The primary differences since 0.99.6 are: (1) git-*-script are no more. The commands installed do not have any such suffix so users do not have to remember if something is implemented as a shell script or not. (2) Many command names with 'cache' in them are renamed with 'index' if that is what they mean. There are backward compatibility symblic links so that you and Porcelains can keep using the old names, but the backward compatibility support is expected to be removed in the near future. Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <junkio@cox.net>
2005-08-29Add [HOWTO] revert/branch/rebase.Libravatar Junio C Hamano1-0/+199
Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <junkio@cox.net>
2005-08-29Remove git-apply-patch-script.Libravatar Junio C Hamano1-1/+1
Now the rebase is rewritten to use git cherry-pick, there is no user for that ancient script. I've checked Cogito and StGIT to make sure they do not use it. Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <junkio@cox.net>
2005-08-26Add how-to on using update-hook.Libravatar Junio C Hamano1-0/+83
Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <junkio@cox.net>
2005-08-26Add Abstract: support for howto index generator.Libravatar Junio C Hamano4-0/+15
Maybe it's time for me to really learn asciidoc. Also I should do Perl ;-). Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <junkio@cox.net>
2005-08-26[PATCH] update howto/using-topic-branches.txtLibravatar tony.luck@intel.com1-23/+45
Various updates and cleanups for my howto on using branches in GIT as a Linux subsystem maintainer. Three categories of changes: 1) Updates for new features in GIT 0.99.5 2) Changes to use "git fetch" rather than "git pull" to update local linus branch. 3) Cleanups suggested by Len Brown Signed-off-by: Tony Luck <tony.luck@intel.com> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <junkio@cox.net>
2005-08-18[PATCH] updates for Documentation/howto/using-topic-branches.txtLibravatar Luck, Tony1-2/+113
Small fix (use "git branch" to make branches, rather than "git checkout -b"). Optimization for trivial patches (apply to release and merge to test). Three sample scripts appended. Signed-off-by: Tony Luck <tony.luck@intel.com> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <junkio@cox.net>
2005-08-15Keep excellent tutorial for using topic branches by Tony LuckLibravatar Junio C Hamano1-0/+153
I would eventually like to move this to become a part of the tutorial, but anyway, this was an excellent post that describes how topic branches can be used to keep track of local changes.
2005-08-15[PATCH] Add some simple howtos, culled from the mailing list.Libravatar Ryan Anderson3-0/+288
I think these are useful, and I think putting them in a new "howto" directory might help some users until we get to the point of splitting up the tutorial to be easier to read. Given the authorship, I think it's safe to put these in the repository. Signed-off-by: Ryan Anderson <ryan@michonline.com>
