2021-10-25gitignore.txt: change "folder" to "directory"Libravatar Martin Ågren1-1/+1
We prefer "directory" over "folder" when discussing the file system concept. Change this instance for consistency -- indeed, even within this paragraph, we already use "directory". Signed-off-by: Martin Ågren <martin.agren@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2021-07-06docs: .gitignore parsing is to the top of the repoLibravatar Andrew Berry1-6/+5
The current documentation reads as if .gitignore files will be parsed in every parent directory, and not until they reach a repository boundary. This clarifies the current behaviour. As well, this corrects 'toplevel' to 'top-level', matching usage for 'top-level domain'. Signed-off-by: Andrew Berry <andrew@furrypaws.ca> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2021-05-04docs: document symlink restrictions for dot-filesLibravatar Jeff King1-0/+4
We stopped allowing symlinks for .gitmodules files in 10ecfa7649 (verify_path: disallow symlinks in .gitmodules, 2018-05-04), and we stopped following symlinks for .gitattributes, .gitignore, and .mailmap in the commits from 204333b015 (Merge branch 'jk/open-dotgitx-with-nofollow', 2021-03-22). The reasons are discussed in detail there, but we never adjusted the documentation to let users know. This hasn't been a big deal since the point is that such setups were mildly broken and thought to be unusual anyway. But it certainly doesn't hurt to be clear and explicit about it. 2018-11-13Merge branch 'nd/wildmatch-double-asterisk'Libravatar Junio C Hamano1-1/+2
A pattern with '**' that does not have a slash on either side used to be an invalid one, but the code now treats such double-asterisks the same way as two normal asterisks that happen to be adjacent to each other. * nd/wildmatch-double-asterisk: wildmatch: change behavior of "foo**bar" in WM_PATHNAME mode
2018-10-29wildmatch: change behavior of "foo**bar" in WM_PATHNAME modeLibravatar Nguyễn Thái Ngọc Duy1-1/+2
In WM_PATHNAME mode (or FNM_PATHNAME), '*' does not match '/' and '**' can but only in three patterns: - '**/' matches zero or more leading directories - '/**/' matches zero or more directories in between - '/**' matches zero or more trailing directories/files When '**' is present but not in one of these patterns, the current behavior is consider the pattern invalid and stop matching. In other words, 'foo**bar' never matches anything, whatever you throw at it. This behavior is arguably a bit confusing partly because we can't really tell the user their pattern is invalid so that they can fix it. So instead, tolerate it and make '**' act like two regular '*'s (which is essentially the same as a single asterisk). This behavior seems more predictable. 2018-02-02gitignore.txt: elaborate shell glob syntaxLibravatar Duy Nguyen1-6/+5
`fnmatch(3)` is a great mention if the intended audience is programmers. For normal users it's probably better to spell out what a shell glob is. This paragraph is updated to roughly tell (or remind) what the main wildcards are supposed to do. All the details are still hidden away behind the `fnmatch(3)` wall because bringing the whole specification here may be too much. 2016-01-08Revert "dir.c: don't exclude whole dir prematurely if neg pattern may match"Libravatar Nguyễn Thái Ngọc Duy1-19/+4
This reverts commit 57534ee77d22e725d971ee89c77dc6aad61c573f. The feature added in that commit requires that patterns behave the same way from anywhere. But some patterns can behave differently depending on current "working" directory. The conditions to catch and avoid these patterns are too loose. The untracked listing[1] and sparse-checkout selection[2] can become incorrect as a result. 2015-09-21dir.c: don't exclude whole dir prematurely if neg pattern may matchLibravatar Nguyễn Thái Ngọc Duy1-4/+19
If there is a pattern "!foo/bar", this patch makes it not exclude "foo" right away. This gives us a chance to examine "foo" and re-include "foo/bar". In order for it to detect that the directory under examination should not be excluded right away, in other words it is a parent directory of a negative pattern, the "directory path" of the negative pattern must be literal. Patterns like "!f?o/bar" can't stop "foo" from being excluded. Basename matching (i.e. "no slashes in the pattern") or must-be-dir matching (i.e. "trailing slash in the pattern") does not work well with this. For example, if we descend in "foo" and are examining "foo/abc", current code for "foo/" pattern will check if path "foo/abc", not "foo", is a directory. The same problem with basename matching. These may need big code reorg to make it work. Signed-off-by: Nguyễn Thái Ngọc Duy <pclouds@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>

2012-06-25Let core.excludesfile default to $XDG_CONFIG_HOME/git/ignoreLibravatar Huynh Khoi Nguyen Nguyen1-1/+3
To use the feature of core.excludesfile, the user needs: 1. to create such a file, 2. and add configuration variable to point at it. Instead, we can make this a one-step process by choosing a default value which points to a filename in the user's $HOME, that is unlikely to already exist on the system, and only use the presence of the file as a cue that the user wants to use that feature. And we use "${XDG_CONFIG_HOME:-$HOME/.config/git}/ignore" as such a file, in the same directory as the newly added configuration file ("${XDG_CONFIG_HOME:-$HOME/.config/git}/config). The use of this directory is in line with XDG specification as a location to store such application specific files. 2011-03-11doc: drop author/documentation sections from most pagesLibravatar Jeff King1-5/+0
The point of these sections is generally to: 1. Give credit where it is due. 2. Give the reader an idea of where to ask questions or file bug reports. But they don't do a good job of either case. For (1), they are out of date and incomplete. A much more accurate answer can be gotten through shortlog or blame. For (2), the correct contact point is generally git@vger, and even if you wanted to cc the contact point, the out-of-date and incomplete fields mean you're likely sending to somebody useless. So let's drop the fields entirely from all manpages except git(1) itself. We already point people to the mailing list for bug reports there, and we can update the Authors section to give credit to the major contributors and point to shortlog and blame for more information. Each page has a "This is part of git" footer, so people can follow that to the main git manpage.
2010-11-11Documentation: point to related commands from gitignoreLibravatar Jonathan Nieder1-5/+19
A frequently asked question on #git is how to stop tracking a file that is mistakenly tracked by git. A frequently attempted strategy is to add such files to .gitignore. Thus one might imagine that the gitignore documentation could be a good entry point for 'git rm' documentation. Add some cross-references in this vein. While at it, move a reference to update-index --assume-unchanged from the DESCRIPTION to lower down on the page. This way, the methodical reader can benefit from first learning what excludes files do, then how they relate to other git facilities. 2010-01-10Documentation: spell 'git cmd' without dash throughoutLibravatar Thomas Rast1-2/+2
The documentation was quite inconsistent when spelling 'git cmd' if it only refers to the program, not to some specific invocation syntax: both 'git-cmd' and 'git cmd' spellings exist. The current trend goes towards dashless forms, and there is precedent in 647ac70 (git-svn.txt: stop using dash-form of commands., 2009-07-07) to actively eliminate the dashed variants. Replace 'git-cmd' with 'git cmd' throughout, except where git-shell, git-cvsserver, git-upload-pack, git-receive-pack, and git-upload-archive are concerned, because those really live in the $PATH.

2008-07-19Documentation: How to ignore local changes in tracked filesLibravatar Petr Baudis1-3/+8
This patch explains more carefully that `.gitignore` concerns only untracked files and refers the reader to git update-index --assume-unchanged in the need of ignoring uncommitted changes in already tracked files. The description of this option is lifted to a more "porcelainish" level and explains the caveats of this usecase. Whether feasible or not, I believe adding this functionality to the porcelain is out of the scope of this patch. (And I personally think that referring to the plumbing in the case of such a special usage is fine.) This is currently probably one of the top FAQs at #git and the --assume-unchanged switch is not widely known; gitignore(5) is the first place where people are likely to look for it.
