2016-06-28doc: typeset long command-line options as literalLibravatar Matthieu Moy1-1/+1
Similarly to the previous commit, use backquotes instead of forward-quotes, for long options. This was obtained with: perl -pi -e "s/'(--[a-z][a-z=<>-]*)'/\`\$1\`/g" *.txt and manual tweak to remove false positive in ascii-art (o'--o'--o' to describe rewritten history). 2011-07-06Documentation: use [verse] for SYNOPSIS sectionsLibravatar Martin von Zweigbergk1-1/+0
The SYNOPSIS sections of most commands that span several lines already use [verse] to retain line breaks. Most commands that don't span several lines seem not to use [verse]. In the HTML output, [verse] does not only preserve line breaks, but also makes the section indented, which causes a slight inconsistency between commands that use [verse] and those that don't. Use [verse] in all SYNOPSIS sections for consistency. Also remove the blank lines from git-fetch.txt and git-rebase.txt to align with the other man pages. In the case of git-rebase.txt, which already uses [verse], the blank line makes the [verse] not apply to the last line, so removing the blank line also makes the formatting within the document more consistent. While at it, add single quotes to 'git cvsimport' for consistency with other commands. 2011-03-11doc: drop author/documentation sections from most pagesLibravatar Jeff King1-11/+0
The point of these sections is generally to: 1. Give credit where it is due. 2. Give the reader an idea of where to ask questions or file bug reports. But they don't do a good job of either case. For (1), they are out of date and incomplete. A much more accurate answer can be gotten through shortlog or blame. For (2), the correct contact point is generally git@vger, and even if you wanted to cc the contact point, the out-of-date and incomplete fields mean you're likely sending to somebody useless. So let's drop the fields entirely from all manpages except git(1) itself. We already point people to the mailing list for bug reports there, and we can update the Authors section to give credit to the major contributors and point to shortlog and blame for more information. Each page has a "This is part of git" footer, so people can follow that to the main git manpage.

2010-07-05Documentation: link to gitrevisions rather than git-rev-parseLibravatar Michael J Gruber1-1/+1
Currently, whenever we need documentation for revisions and ranges, we link to the git-rev-parse man page, i.e. a plumbing man page, which has this along with the documentation of all rev-parse modes. Link to the new gitrevisions man page instead in all cases except - when the actual git-rev-parse command is referred to or - in very technical context (git-send-pack). 2010-03-02Merge branch 'ml/color-when'Libravatar Junio C Hamano1-2/+4
* ml/color-when: Add an optional argument for --color options
2010-02-18Add an optional argument for --color optionsLibravatar Mark Lodato1-2/+4
Make git-branch, git-show-branch, git-grep, and all the diff-based programs accept an optional argument <when> for --color. The argument is a colorbool: "always", "never", or "auto". If no argument is given, "always" is used; --no-color is an alias for --color=never. This makes the command-line interface consistent with other GNU tools, such as `ls' and `grep', and with the git-config color options. Note that, without an argument, --color and --no-color work exactly as before. To implement this, two internal changes were made: 1. Allow the first argument of git_config_colorbool() to be NULL, in which case it returns -1 if the argument isn't "always", "never", or "auto". 2. Add OPT_COLOR_FLAG(), OPT__COLOR(), and parse_opt_color_flag_cb() to the option parsing library. The callback uses git_config_colorbool(), so color.h is now a dependency of parse-options.c. 2010-02-17docs: don't talk about $GIT_DIR/refs/ everywhereLibravatar Jeff King1-5/+5
It is misleading to say that we pull refs from $GIT_DIR/refs/*, because we may also consult the packed refs mechanism. These days we tend to treat the "refs hierarchy" as more of an abstract namespace that happens to be represented as $GIT_DIR/refs. At best, this is a minor inaccuracy, but at worst it can confuse users who then look in $GIT_DIR/refs and find that it is missing some of the refs they expected to see. This patch drops most uses of "$GIT_DIR/refs/*", changing them into just "refs/*", under the assumption that users can handle the concept of an abstract refs namespace. There are a few things to note: - most cases just dropped the $GIT_DIR/ portion. But for cases where that left _just_ the word "refs", I changed it to "refs/" to help indicate that it was a hierarchy. I didn't do the same for longer paths (e.g., "refs/heads" remained, instead of becoming "refs/heads/"). - in some cases, no change was made, as the text was explicitly about unpacked refs (e.g., the discussion in git-pack-refs). - In some cases it made sense instead to note the existence of packed refs (e.g., in check-ref-format and rev-parse). 2009-08-05git-merge-base/git-show-branch --merge-base: Documentation and testLibravatar Michael J Gruber1-3/+5
Currently, the documentation suggests that 'git merge-base -a' and 'git show-branch --merge-base' are equivalent (in fact it claims that the former cannot handle more than two revs). Alas, the handling of more than two revs is very different. Document this by tests and correct the documentation to reflect this. 2008-07-05manpages: italicize git command names (which were in teletype font)Libravatar Jonathan Nieder1-1/+1
The names of git commands are not meant to be entered at the commandline; they are just names. So we render them in italics, as is usual for command names in manpages. Using doit () { perl -e 'for (<>) { s/\`(git-[^\`.]*)\`/'\''\1'\''/g; print }' } for i in git*.txt config.txt diff*.txt blame*.txt fetch*.txt i18n.txt \ merge*.txt pretty*.txt pull*.txt rev*.txt urls*.txt do doit <"$i" >"$i+" && mv "$i+" "$i" done git diff . 2008-07-01Documentation formatting and cleanupLibravatar Jonathan Nieder1-2/+2
Following what appears to be the predominant style, format names of commands and commandlines both as `teletype text`. While we're at it, add articles ("a" and "the") in some places, italicize the name of the command in the manual page synopsis line, and add a comma or two where it seems appropriate. 2008-07-01Documentation: be consistent about "git-" versus "git "Libravatar Jonathan Nieder1-2/+2
Since the git-* commands are not installed in $(bindir), using "git-command <parameters>" in examples in the documentation is not a good idea. On the other hand, it is nice to be able to refer to each command using one hyphenated word. (There is no escaping it, anyway: man page names cannot have spaces in them.) This patch retains the dash in naming an operation, command, program, process, or action. Complete command lines that can be entered at a shell (i.e., without options omitted) are made to use the dashless form. The changes consist only of replacing some spaces with hyphens and vice versa. After a "s/ /-/g", the unpatched and patched versions are identical. Signed-off-by: Jonathan Nieder <jrnieder@uchicago.edu> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2008-06-08Docs: Use "-l::\n--long\n" format in OPTIONS sectionsLibravatar Stephan Beyer1-2/+4
The OPTIONS section of a documentation file contains a list of the options a git command accepts. Currently there are several variants to describe the case that different options (almost) do the same in the OPTIONS section. Some are: -f, --foo:: -f|--foo:: -f | --foo:: But AsciiDoc has the special form: -f:: --foo:: This patch applies this form to the documentation of the whole git suite, and removes useless em-dash prevention, so \--foo becomes --foo. I first saved them with "format-patch -4", and then did a reset at @{8}. At @{7}, I applied one of them with "am", and then used "git-apply" on the other one, and amended the commit at @{6} (so @{6} and @{7} has the same parent). I did not like the log message, so I amended again at @{5}. Then I cherry-picked @{9}~2 to create @{3} (the log message shows that it needs to learn to set GIT_REFLOG_ACTION -- it uses "git-commit" and the log entry is attributed for it). Another cherry-pick built @{2} out of @{9}, but what I wanted to do was to squash these two into one, so I did a "reset HEAD^" at @{1} and then made the final commit by amending what was at the top.
