2011-12-20git-sh-setup: make require_clean_work_tree part of the interfaceLibravatar Thomas Rast1-0/+10
92c62a3 (Porcelain scripts: Rewrite cryptic "needs update" error message, 2010-10-19) refactored git's own checking to a function in git-sh-setup. This is a very useful thing for script writers, so document it. Signed-off-by: Thomas Rast <trast@student.ethz.ch> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2011-07-06Documentation: use [verse] for SYNOPSIS sectionsLibravatar Martin von Zweigbergk1-0/+1
The SYNOPSIS sections of most commands that span several lines already use [verse] to retain line breaks. Most commands that don't span several lines seem not to use [verse]. In the HTML output, [verse] does not only preserve line breaks, but also makes the section indented, which causes a slight inconsistency between commands that use [verse] and those that don't. Use [verse] in all SYNOPSIS sections for consistency. Also remove the blank lines from git-fetch.txt and git-rebase.txt to align with the other man pages. In the case of git-rebase.txt, which already uses [verse], the blank line makes the [verse] not apply to the last line, so removing the blank line also makes the formatting within the document more consistent. While at it, add single quotes to 'git cvsimport' for consistency with other commands. * jc/require-work-tree-exists: require-work-tree wants more than what its name says
2011-05-24require-work-tree wants more than what its name saysLibravatar Junio C Hamano1-3/+8
Somebody tried "git pull" from a random place completely outside the work tree, while exporting GIT_DIR and GIT_WORK_TREE that are set to correct places, e.g. GIT_WORK_TREE=$HOME/git.git GIT_DIR=$GIT_WORK_TREE/.git export GIT_WORK_TREE GIT_DIR cd /tmp git pull At the beginning of git-pull, we check "require-work-tree" and then "cd-to-toplevel". I _think_ the original intention when I wrote the command was "we MUST have a work tree, our $(cwd) might not be at the top-level directory of it", and no stronger than that. That check is a very sensible thing to do before doing cd-to-toplevel. We check that the place we would want to go exists, and then go there. But the implementation of require_work_tree we have today is quite different. I don't have energy to dig the history, but currently it says: test "$(git rev-parse --is-inside-work-tree 2>/dev/null)" = true || die "fatal: $0 cannot be used without a working tree." Which is completely bogus. Even though we may happen to be just outside of it right now, we may have a working tree that we can cd_to_toplevel back to. Add a function "require_work_tree_exists" that implements the check this function originally intended (this is so that third-party scripts that rely on the current behaviour do not have to get broken). For now, update _no_ in-tree scripts, not even "git pull", as nobody on the list seems to really care about the above corner case workflow that triggered this. Scripts can be updated after vetting that they do want the "we want to make sure the place we are going to go actually exists" semantics. Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2011-03-11doc: drop author/documentation sections from most pagesLibravatar Jeff King1-9/+0
The point of these sections is generally to: 1. Give credit where it is due. 2. Give the reader an idea of where to ask questions or file bug reports. But they don't do a good job of either case. For (1), they are out of date and incomplete. A much more accurate answer can be gotten through shortlog or blame. For (2), the correct contact point is generally git@vger, and even if you wanted to cc the contact point, the out-of-date and incomplete fields mean you're likely sending to somebody useless. So let's drop the fields entirely from all manpages except git(1) itself. We already point people to the mailing list for bug reports there, and we can update the Authors section to give credit to the major contributors and point to shortlog and blame for more information. Each page has a "This is part of git" footer, so people can follow that to the main git manpage.
2010-01-10Documentation: spell 'git cmd' without dash throughoutLibravatar Thomas Rast1-1/+1
The documentation was quite inconsistent when spelling 'git cmd' if it only refers to the program, not to some specific invocation syntax: both 'git-cmd' and 'git cmd' spellings exist. The current trend goes towards dashless forms, and there is precedent in 647ac70 (git-svn.txt: stop using dash-form of commands., 2009-07-07) to actively eliminate the dashed variants. Replace 'git-cmd' with 'git cmd' throughout, except where git-shell, git-cvsserver, git-upload-pack, git-receive-pack, and git-upload-archive are concerned, because those really live in the $PATH.
2008-07-05manpages: italicize git command names (which were in teletype font)Libravatar Jonathan Nieder1-1/+1
The names of git commands are not meant to be entered at the commandline; they are just names. So we render them in italics, as is usual for command names in manpages. Using doit () { perl -e 'for (<>) { s/\`(git-[^\`.]*)\`/'\''\1'\''/g; print }' } for i in git*.txt config.txt diff*.txt blame*.txt fetch*.txt i18n.txt \ merge*.txt pretty*.txt pull*.txt rev*.txt urls*.txt do doit <"$i" >"$i+" && mv "$i+" "$i" done git diff . 2008-06-29Documentation: don't assume git-sh-setup and git-parse-remote are in PATHLibravatar jrnieder@uchicago.edu1-1/+1
When git-parse-remote and git-sh-setup are not installed in $(bindir) anymore, the shell script library won't be found on user's $PATH in general. Signed-off-by: Jonathan Nieder <jrnieder@uchicago.edu> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2008-06-06documentation: move git(7) to git(1)Libravatar Christian Couder1-1/+1
As the "git" man page describes the "git" command at the end-user level, it seems better to move it to man section 1. Signed-off-by: Christian Couder <chriscool@tuxfamily.org> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2008-01-06Documentation: rename gitlink macro to linkgitLibravatar Dan McGee1-1/+1
Between AsciiDoc 8.2.2 and 8.2.3, the following change was made to the stock Asciidoc configuration: @@ -149,7 +153,10 @@ # Inline macros. # Backslash prefix required for escape processing. # (?s) re flag for line spanning. -(?su)[\\]?(?P<name>\w(\w|-)*?):(?P<target>\S*?)(\[(?P<attrlist>.*?)\])= + +# Explicit so they can be nested. +(?su)[\\]?(?P<name>(http|https|ftp|file|mailto|callto|image|link)):(?P<target>\S*?)(\[(?P<attrlist>.*?)\])= + # Anchor: [[[id]]]. Bibliographic anchor. (?su)[\\]?\[\[\[(?P<attrlist>[\w][\w-]*?)\]\]\]=anchor3 # Anchor: [[id,xreflabel]] This default regex now matches explicit values, and unfortunately in this case gitlink was being matched by just 'link', causing the wrong inline macro template to be applied. By renaming the macro, we can avoid being matched by the wrong regex. Signed-off-by: Dan McGee <dpmcgee@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>

2007-06-07War on whitespaceLibravatar Junio C Hamano1-1/+0
This uses "git-apply --whitespace=strip" to fix whitespace errors that have crept in to our source files over time. There are a few files that need to have trailing whitespaces (most notably, test vectors). The results still passes the test, and build result in Documentation/ area is unchanged. 2005-10-03[PATCH] Random documentation fixesLibravatar Jonas Fonseca1-4/+5
The fixes focuses on improving the HTML output. Most noteworthy: - Fix the Makefile to also make various *.html files depend on included files. - Consistently use 'NOTE: ...' instead of '[ ... ]' for additional info. - Fix ending '::' for description lists in OPTION section etc. - Fix paragraphs in description lists ending up as preformated text. - Always use listingblocks (preformatted text wrapped in lines with -----) for examples that span empty lines, so they are put in only one HTML block. - Use '1.' instead of '(1)' for numbered lists. - Fix linking to other GIT docs. - git-rev-list.txt: put option descriptions in an OPTION section. 2005-09-07Big tool rename.Libravatar Junio C Hamano1-0/+34
As promised, this is the "big tool rename" patch. The primary differences since 0.99.6 are: (1) git-*-script are no more. The commands installed do not have any such suffix so users do not have to remember if something is implemented as a shell script or not. (2) Many command names with 'cache' in them are renamed with 'index' if that is what they mean. There are backward compatibility symblic links so that you and Porcelains can keep using the old names, but the backward compatibility support is expected to be removed in the near future.
