2008-07-01Documentation formatting and cleanupLibravatar Jonathan Nieder1-7/+7
Following what appears to be the predominant style, format names of commands and commandlines both as `teletype text`. While we're at it, add articles ("a" and "the") in some places, italicize the name of the command in the manual page synopsis line, and add a comma or two where it seems appropriate. 2008-07-01Documentation: be consistent about "git-" versus "git "Libravatar Jonathan Nieder1-16/+16
Since the git-* commands are not installed in $(bindir), using "git-command <parameters>" in examples in the documentation is not a good idea. On the other hand, it is nice to be able to refer to each command using one hyphenated word. (There is no escaping it, anyway: man page names cannot have spaces in them.) This patch retains the dash in naming an operation, command, program, process, or action. Complete command lines that can be entered at a shell (i.e., without options omitted) are made to use the dashless form. The changes consist only of replacing some spaces with hyphens and vice versa. After a "s/ /-/g", the unpatched and patched versions are identical. Signed-off-by: Jonathan Nieder <jrnieder@uchicago.edu> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>

2008-06-06documentation: move git(7) to git(1)Libravatar Christian Couder1-1/+1
As the "git" man page describes the "git" command at the end-user level, it seems better to move it to man section 1. Signed-off-by: Christian Couder <chriscool@tuxfamily.org> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>

2008-01-06Documentation: rename gitlink macro to linkgitLibravatar Dan McGee1-4/+4
Between AsciiDoc 8.2.2 and 8.2.3, the following change was made to the stock Asciidoc configuration: @@ -149,7 +153,10 @@ # Inline macros. # Backslash prefix required for escape processing. # (?s) re flag for line spanning. -(?su)[\\]?(?P<name>\w(\w|-)*?):(?P<target>\S*?)(\[(?P<attrlist>.*?)\])= + +# Explicit so they can be nested. +(?su)[\\]?(?P<name>(http|https|ftp|file|mailto|callto|image|link)):(?P<target>\S*?)(\[(?P<attrlist>.*?)\])= + # Anchor: [[[id]]]. Bibliographic anchor. (?su)[\\]?\[\[\[(?P<attrlist>[\w][\w-]*?)\]\]\]=anchor3 # Anchor: [[id,xreflabel]] This default regex now matches explicit values, and unfortunately in this case gitlink was being matched by just 'link', causing the wrong inline macro template to be applied. By renaming the macro, we can avoid being matched by the wrong regex. Signed-off-by: Dan McGee <dpmcgee@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>

2007-06-07War on whitespaceLibravatar Junio C Hamano1-1/+0
This uses "git-apply --whitespace=strip" to fix whitespace errors that have crept in to our source files over time. There are a few files that need to have trailing whitespaces (most notably, test vectors). The results still passes the test, and build result in Documentation/ area is unchanged. 2007-06-02Create a new manpage for the gitignore format, and reference it elsewhereLibravatar Josh Triplett1-1/+2
Only git-ls-files(1) describes the gitignore format in detail, and it does so with reference to git-ls-files options. Most users don't use the plumbing command git-ls-files directly, and shouldn't have to look in its manpage for information on the gitignore format. Create a new manpage gitignore(5) (Documentation/gitignore.txt), and factor out the gitignore documentation into that file, changing it to refer to .gitignore and $GIT_DIR/info/exclude as used by porcelain commands. Reference gitignore(5) from other relevant manpages and documentation. Remove now-redundant information on exclude patterns from git-ls-files(1), leaving only information on how git-ls-files options specify exclude patterns and what precedence they have. 2007-04-03git-read-tree --index-output=<file>Libravatar Junio C Hamano1-1/+13
This corrects the interface mistake of the previous one, and gives a command line parameter to the only plumbing command that currently needs it: "git-read-tree". We can add the calls to set_alternate_index_output() to other plumbing commands that update the index if/when needed. Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <junkio@cox.net>

2006-05-01read-tree: --prefix=<path>/ option.Libravatar Junio C Hamano1-1/+10
With "--prefix=<path>/" option, read-tree keeps the current index contents, and reads the contents of named tree-ish under directory at `<prefix>`. The original index file cannot have anything at the path `<prefix>` itself, and have nothing in `<prefix>/` directory. This can be used to graft an independent tree into a subdirectory of the current index. Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <junkio@cox.net>

2005-11-15Documentation: do not blindly run 'cat' .git/HEAD, or echo into it.Libravatar Junio C Hamano1-1/+1
Many places in the documentation we still talked about reading what commit is recorded in .git/HEAD or writing the new head information into it, both assuming .git/HEAD is a symlink. That is not necessarily so. Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <junkio@cox.net>

2005-10-03[PATCH] Random documentation fixesLibravatar Jonas Fonseca1-2/+2
The fixes focuses on improving the HTML output. Most noteworthy: - Fix the Makefile to also make various *.html files depend on included files. - Consistently use 'NOTE: ...' instead of '[ ... ]' for additional info. - Fix ending '::' for description lists in OPTION section etc. - Fix paragraphs in description lists ending up as preformated text. - Always use listingblocks (preformatted text wrapped in lines with -----) for examples that span empty lines, so they are put in only one HTML block. - Use '1.' instead of '(1)' for numbered lists. - Fix linking to other GIT docs. - git-rev-list.txt: put option descriptions in an OPTION section. 2005-09-20Document -i flag to git-read-treeLibravatar Junio C Hamano1-1/+11
Somehow I missed it when we updated read-tree to support the recursive merge strategy. Also -i should require -m as well, which the command did not check. Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <junkio@cox.net>
2005-09-20[PATCH] Documentation: Update all files to use the new gitlink: macroLibravatar Sergey Vlasov1-2/+2

2005-09-07Big tool rename.Libravatar Junio C Hamano1-12/+12
As promised, this is the "big tool rename" patch. The primary differences since 0.99.6 are: (1) git-*-script are no more. The commands installed do not have any such suffix so users do not have to remember if something is implemented as a shell script or not. (2) Many command names with 'cache' in them are renamed with 'index' if that is what they mean. There are backward compatibility symblic links so that you and Porcelains can keep using the old names, but the backward compatibility support is expected to be removed in the near future. 2005-06-07[PATCH] read-tree: update documentation for 3-way merge.Libravatar Junio C Hamano1-24/+66

2005-06-07[PATCH] read-tree: save more user hassles during fast-forward.Libravatar Junio C Hamano1-0/+74
This implements the "never lose the current cache information or the work tree state, but favor a successful merge over merge failure" principle in the fast-forward two-tree merge operation. It comes with a set of tests to cover all the cases described in the case matrix found in the new documentation.
