Early text written in 2006 explains the "--abbrev=<n>" option to
"show only a partial prefix", without saying that the length of the
partial prefix is not necessarily the number given to the option to
ensure that the output names the object uniquely.
Update documentation for the diff family of commands, "blame",
"branch --verbose", "ls-files" and "ls-tree" to stress that the
short prefix must uniquely refer to an object, and <n> is merely
the mininum number of hexdigits used in the prefix.

Linking the description for pathname quoting to the configuration
variable "core.quotePath" removes inconstistent and incomplete
sections while also giving two hints how to deal with it: Either with
"-c core.quotePath=false" or with "-z".

It was common in our documentation to surround short option names with
forward quotes, which renders as italic in HTML. Instead, use backquotes
which renders as monospace. This is one more step toward conformance to
Documentation/CodingGuidelines.
This was obtained with:

The point of these sections is generally to:
1. Give credit where it is due.
2. Give the reader an idea of where to ask questions or
file bug reports.
But they don't do a good job of either case. For (1), they
are out of date and incomplete. A much more accurate answer
can be gotten through shortlog or blame. For (2), the
correct contact point is generally git@vger, and even if you
wanted to cc the contact point, the out-of-date and
incomplete fields mean you're likely sending to somebody
useless.
So let's drop the fields entirely from all manpages except
git(1) itself. We already point people to the mailing list
for bug reports there, and we can update the Authors section
to give credit to the major contributors and point to
shortlog and blame for more information.
Each page has a "This is part of git" footer, so people can
follow that to the main git manpage.

Use `code snippet` style instead of 'emphasis' for `git cmd ...`
according to the following rules:
* The SYNOPSIS sections are left untouched.
* If the intent is that the user type the command exactly as given, it
is `code`.
If the user is only loosely referred to a command and/or option, it
remains 'emphasised'.

When run in a working copy subdirectory, git-ls-tree will automagically
add the prefix to the pathspec, which can result in an unexpected behavior
when the tree object accessed is not the root tree object.

Since the git-* commands are not installed in $(bindir), using
"git-command <parameters>" in examples in the documentation is
not a good idea. On the other hand, it is nice to be able to
refer to each command using one hyphenated word. (There is no
escaping it, anyway: man page names cannot have spaces in them.)
This patch retains the dash in naming an operation, command,
program, process, or action. Complete command lines that can
be entered at a shell (i.e., without options omitted) are
made to use the dashless form.
The changes consist only of replacing some spaces with hyphens
and vice versa. After a "s/ /-/g", the unpatched and patched
versions are identical.

This default regex now matches explicit values, and unfortunately in this
case gitlink was being matched by just 'link', causing the wrong inline
macro template to be applied. By renaming the macro, we can avoid being
matched by the wrong regex.

This uses "git-apply --whitespace=strip" to fix whitespace errors that have
crept in to our source files over time. There are a few files that need
to have trailing whitespaces (most notably, test vectors). The results
still passes the test, and build result in Documentation/ area is unchanged.

Add -l/--long option to git-ls-tree command, which displays
object size of a blob entry. Object size is placed after
object id (left-justified with minimum width of 7 characters).
For non-blob entries `-' is used.
Rationale: for non-blob entries size of an object has no much
meaning, and is not very interesting. Moreover, in planned
pack v4 tree objects would be constructed on demand, so tree
size would need to be calculated.

This patch aims to freshen up a bit the git-ls-tree documentation. It hints
that the list of paths are in fact patterns to be matched, explains the new
-t, --name-only and --name-status options, corrects the original autorship
information to refer to yours sincerely, corrects several grammar mistakes,
etc.
Since the documentation still deserves some significant work (at least
proper description of the pattern matching), I also added the stub notice.

This is a complete rewrite of ls-tree to make it behave more
like what "/bin/ls -a" does in the current working directory.
Namely, the changes are:
- Unlike the old ls-tree behaviour that used paths arguments to
restrict output (not that it worked as intended---as pointed
out in the mailing list discussion, it was quite incoherent),
this rewrite uses paths arguments to specify what to show.
- Without arguments, it implicitly uses the root level as its
sole argument ("/bin/ls -a" behaves as if "." is given
without argument).
- Without -r (recursive) flag, it shows the named blob (either
file or symlink), or the named tree and its immediate
children.
- With -r flag, it shows the named path, and recursively
descends into it if it is a tree.
- With -d flag, it shows the named path and does not show its
children even if the path is a tree, nor descends into it
recursively.
This is still request-for-comments patch. There is no mailing
list consensus that this proposed new behaviour is a good one.
The patch to t/t3100-ls-tree-restrict.sh illustrates
user-visible behaviour changes. Namely:
* "git-ls-tree $tree path1 path0" lists path1 first and then
path0. It used to use paths as an output restrictor and
showed output in cache entry order (i.e. path0 first and then
path1) regardless of the order of paths arguments.
* "git-ls-tree $tree path2" lists path2 and its immediate
children but having explicit paths argument does not imply
recursive behaviour anymore, hence paths/baz is shown but not
paths/baz/b.

Enhance git-ls-tree to allow optional 'match paths' that
restricts the output of git-ls-tree. This is useful to retrieve
a single file's SHA1 out of a tree without creating an index.
