2020-03-11Merge branch 'jc/doc-single-h-is-for-help'Libravatar Junio C Hamano1-1/+3
Both "git ls-remote -h" and "git grep -h" give short usage help, like any other Git subcommand, but it is not unreasonable to expect that the former would behave the same as "git ls-remote --head" (there is no other sensible behaviour for the latter). The documentation has been updated in an attempt to clarify this. * jc/doc-single-h-is-for-help: Documentation: clarify that `-h` alone stands for `help`
2020-02-27Documentation: clarify that `-h` alone stands for `help`Libravatar Junio C Hamano1-1/+3
We seem to be getting new users who get confused every 20 months or so with this "-h consistently wants to give help, but the commands to which `-h` may feel like a good short-form option want it to mean something else." compromise. Let's make sure that the readers know that `git cmd -h` (with no other arguments) is a way to get usage text, even for commands like ls-remote and grep. Also extend the description that is already in gitcli.txt, as it is clear that users still get confused with the current text. Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2019-09-09git-ls-remote.txt: wrap shell listing in "----"Libravatar Martin Ågren1-15/+17
The second "column" in the output of `git ls-remote` is typeset differently by AsciiDoc and Asciidoctor, similar to various examples touched by the last few commits. Fix this by marking the example shell session as a code listing by wrapping it in "----". Because this gives us some extra indentation, we can remove the one that we have been carrying explicitly. That is, drop the first tab of indentation on each line. With AsciiDoc, this results in identical rendering before and after this commit. Asciidoctor now renders this the same as AsciiDoc does. 2019-03-07Documentation: turn middle-of-line tabs into spacesLibravatar Martin Ågren1-1/+1
These tabs happen to appear in columns where they don't stand out too much, so the diff here is non-obvious. Some of these are rendered differently by AsciiDoc and Asciidoctor (although the difference might be invisible!), which is how I found a few of them. The remainder were found using `git grep "[a-zA-Z.,)]$TAB[a-zA-Z]"`. Signed-off-by: Martin Ågren <martin.agren@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2018-05-23Merge branch 'bw/server-options'Libravatar Junio C Hamano1-0/+8
The transport protocol v2 is getting updated further. * bw/server-options: fetch: send server options when using protocol v2 ls-remote: send server options when using protocol v2 serve: introduce the server-option capability
2018-04-24ls-remote: send server options when using protocol v2Libravatar Brandon Williams1-0/+8
Teach ls-remote to optionally accept server options by specifying them on the cmdline via '-o' or '--server-option'. These server options are sent to the remote end when querying for the remote end's refs using protocol version 2. If communicating using a protocol other than v2 the provided options are ignored and not sent to the remote end. 2018-04-09ls-remote: create '--sort' optionLibravatar Harald Nordgren1-1/+15
Create a '--sort' option for ls-remote, based on the one from for-each-ref. This e.g. allows ref names to be sorted by version semantics, so that v1.2 is sorted before v1.10. Signed-off-by: Harald Nordgren <haraldnordgren@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2016-01-19ls-remote: add support for showing symrefsLibravatar Thomas Gummerer1-1/+8
Sometimes it's useful to know the main branch of a git repository without actually downloading the repository. This can be done by looking at the symrefs stored in the remote repository. Currently git doesn't provide a simple way to show the symrefs stored on the remote repository, even though the information is available. Add a --symref command line argument to the ls-remote command, which shows the symrefs in the remote repository. While there, replace a literal tab in the format string with \t to make it more obvious to the reader. 2016-01-19ls-remote: fix synopsisLibravatar Thomas Gummerer1-1/+1
git ls-remote takes an optional get-url argument, and specifying the repository is optional. Fix the synopsis in the documentation to reflect this. Signed-off-by: Thomas Gummerer <t.gummerer@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2016-01-19ls-remote: document --refs optionLibravatar Thomas Gummerer1-1/+4
The --refs option was originally introduced in 2718ff0 ("Improve git-peek-remote"). The ls-remote command was first documented in 972b6fe ("ls-remote: drop storing operation and add documentation."), but the --refs option was never documented. Fix this. 2016-01-19ls-remote: document --quiet optionLibravatar Thomas Gummerer1-1/+5
cefb2a5e3 ("ls-remote: print URL when no repo is specified") added a quiet option to ls-remote, but didn't add it to the documentation. Add it. Signed-off-by: Thomas Gummerer <t.gummerer@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2015-09-28ls-remote.txt: delete unsupported optionLibravatar Nguyễn Thái Ngọc Duy1-2/+1
-u <exec> has never been supported, but it was mentioned since 0a2bb55 (git ls-remote: make usage string match manpage - 2008-11-11). Nobody has complained about it for seven years, it's probably safe to say nobody cares. So let's remove "-u" in documents instead of adding code to support it. While at there, fix --upload-pack syntax too. Signed-off-by: Nguyễn Thái Ngọc Duy <pclouds@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>

2013-06-23ls-remote doc: rewrite <repository> paragraphLibravatar Ramkumar Ramachandra1-3/+3

2013-06-23ls-remote doc: fix example invocation on git.gitLibravatar Ramkumar Ramachandra1-1/+0
Under the EXAMPLES section, there is one invocation on the git.git repository that attempts to list the refs master, pu, and rc. The ref rc does not exist in today's repository, so remove it. Among other things, this example demonstrates that the "<refs>..." argument is simply a filter; requesting a non-existent ref is not an error. 2012-09-07ls-remote: document the '--get-url' optionLibravatar Stefan Naewe1-0/+5
While looking for a way to expand the URL of a remote that uses a 'url.<name>.insteadOf' config option I stumbled over the undocumented '--get-url' option of 'git ls-remote'. This adds some minimum documentation for that option. And while at it, also add that option to the '-h' output. 2011-05-18ls-remote: the --exit-code option reports "no matching refs"Libravatar Michael Schubert1-1/+7
The "git ls-remote" uses its exit status to indicate if it successfully talked with the remote repository. A new option "--exit-code" makes the command exit with status "2" when there is no refs to be listed, even when the command successfully talked with the remote repository. This way, the caller can tell if we failed to contact the remote, or the remote did not have what we wanted to see. Of course, you can inspect the output from the command, which has been and will continue to be a valid way to check the same thing. 2011-03-11doc: drop author/documentation sections from most pagesLibravatar Jeff King1-4/+0
The point of these sections is generally to: 1. Give credit where it is due. 2. Give the reader an idea of where to ask questions or file bug reports. But they don't do a good job of either case. For (1), they are out of date and incomplete. A much more accurate answer can be gotten through shortlog or blame. For (2), the correct contact point is generally git@vger, and even if you wanted to cc the contact point, the out-of-date and incomplete fields mean you're likely sending to somebody useless. So let's drop the fields entirely from all manpages except git(1) itself. We already point people to the mailing list for bug reports there, and we can update the Authors section to give credit to the major contributors and point to shortlog and blame for more information. Each page has a "This is part of git" footer, so people can follow that to the main git manpage.

2008-07-05manpages: italicize git command names (which were in teletype font)Libravatar Jonathan Nieder1-1/+1
The names of git commands are not meant to be entered at the commandline; they are just names. So we render them in italics, as is usual for command names in manpages. Using doit () { perl -e 'for (<>) { s/\`(git-[^\`.]*)\`/'\''\1'\''/g; print }' } for i in git*.txt config.txt diff*.txt blame*.txt fetch*.txt i18n.txt \ merge*.txt pretty*.txt pull*.txt rev*.txt urls*.txt do doit <"$i" >"$i+" && mv "$i+" "$i" done git diff . 2008-07-01Documentation formatting and cleanupLibravatar Jonathan Nieder1-1/+1
Following what appears to be the predominant style, format names of commands and commandlines both as `teletype text`. While we're at it, add articles ("a" and "the") in some places, italicize the name of the command in the manual page synopsis line, and add a comma or two where it seems appropriate. 2008-07-01Documentation: be consistent about "git-" versus "git "Libravatar Jonathan Nieder1-1/+1
Since the git-* commands are not installed in $(bindir), using "git-command <parameters>" in examples in the documentation is not a good idea. On the other hand, it is nice to be able to refer to each command using one hyphenated word. (There is no escaping it, anyway: man page names cannot have spaces in them.) This patch retains the dash in naming an operation, command, program, process, or action. Complete command lines that can be entered at a shell (i.e., without options omitted) are made to use the dashless form. The changes consist only of replacing some spaces with hyphens and vice versa. After a "s/ /-/g", the unpatched and patched versions are identical. Signed-off-by: Jonathan Nieder <jrnieder@uchicago.edu> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2008-06-08Docs: Use "-l::\n--long\n" format in OPTIONS sectionsLibravatar Stephan Beyer1-2/+6
The OPTIONS section of a documentation file contains a list of the options a git command accepts. Currently there are several variants to describe the case that different options (almost) do the same in the OPTIONS section. Some are: -f, --foo:: -f|--foo:: -f | --foo:: But AsciiDoc has the special form: -f:: --foo:: This patch applies this form to the documentation of the whole git suite, and removes useless em-dash prevention, so \--foo becomes --foo. 2005-09-07Big tool rename.Libravatar Junio C Hamano1-0/+64
As promised, this is the "big tool rename" patch. The primary differences since 0.99.6 are: (1) git-*-script are no more. The commands installed do not have any such suffix so users do not have to remember if something is implemented as a shell script or not. (2) Many command names with 'cache' in them are renamed with 'index' if that is what they mean. There are backward compatibility symblic links so that you and Porcelains can keep using the old names, but the backward compatibility support is expected to be removed in the near future.
