2016-06-28doc: typeset long command-line options as literalLibravatar Matthieu Moy1-3/+3
Similarly to the previous commit, use backquotes instead of forward-quotes, for long options. This was obtained with: perl -pi -e "s/'(--[a-z][a-z=<>-]*)'/\`\$1\`/g" *.txt and manual tweak to remove false positive in ascii-art (o'--o'--o' to describe rewritten history). 2016-06-28doc: typeset short command-line options as literalLibravatar Matthieu Moy1-7/+7
It was common in our documentation to surround short option names with forward quotes, which renders as italic in HTML. Instead, use backquotes which renders as monospace. This is one more step toward conformance to Documentation/CodingGuidelines. This was obtained with: perl -pi -e "s/'(-[a-z])'/\`\$1\`/g" *.txt Signed-off-by: Matthieu Moy <Matthieu.Moy@imag.fr> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2011-05-26docs: fix some antique example outputLibravatar Jeff King1-2/+2
These diff-index and diff-tree sample outputs date back to the first month of git's existence. The output format has changed slightly since then, so let's have it match the current output. Signed-off-by: Jeff King <peff@peff.net> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2011-03-11doc: drop author/documentation sections from most pagesLibravatar Jeff King1-9/+0
The point of these sections is generally to: 1. Give credit where it is due. 2. Give the reader an idea of where to ask questions or file bug reports. But they don't do a good job of either case. For (1), they are out of date and incomplete. A much more accurate answer can be gotten through shortlog or blame. For (2), the correct contact point is generally git@vger, and even if you wanted to cc the contact point, the out-of-date and incomplete fields mean you're likely sending to somebody useless. So let's drop the fields entirely from all manpages except git(1) itself. We already point people to the mailing list for bug reports there, and we can update the Authors section to give credit to the major contributors and point to shortlog and blame for more information. Each page has a "This is part of git" footer, so people can follow that to the main git manpage.
2010-01-10Documentation: spell 'git cmd' without dash throughoutLibravatar Thomas Rast1-5/+5
The documentation was quite inconsistent when spelling 'git cmd' if it only refers to the program, not to some specific invocation syntax: both 'git-cmd' and 'git cmd' spellings exist. The current trend goes towards dashless forms, and there is precedent in 647ac70 (git-svn.txt: stop using dash-form of commands., 2009-07-07) to actively eliminate the dashed variants. Replace 'git-cmd' with 'git cmd' throughout, except where git-shell, git-cvsserver, git-upload-pack, git-receive-pack, and git-upload-archive are concerned, because those really live in the $PATH.

2008-08-11Teach git diff-tree --stdin to diff treesLibravatar Karl Hasselström1-5/+10
When feeding trees on the command line, you can give exactly two trees, not three nor one; --stdin now supports this "two tree" form on its input, in addition to accepting lines with one or more commits. When diffing trees (either specified on the command line or from the standard input), the -s, -v, --pretty, --abbrev-commit, --encoding, --no-commit-id, and --always options are ignored, since they do not apply to trees; and the -m, -c, and --cc options are ignored since they would be meaningful only with three or more trees, which is not supported (yet). 2008-08-05fix diff-tree --stdin documentationLibravatar Junio C Hamano1-3/+3
Long time ago, the feature of "diff-tree --stdin" to take a commit and its parents on one line was broken, and did not support the common: git rev-list --parents $commits... -- $paths... | git diff-tree --stdin -v -p usage pattern by Porcelains properly. For diff-tree to talk sensibly about commits, it needs to see commits, not just trees; the code was fixed to take list of commits on the standard input in 1.2.0. However we left the documentation stale for a long time, until Karl Hasselström finally noticed it very recently. Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>

2008-07-05manpages: italicize git command names (which were in teletype font)Libravatar Jonathan Nieder1-5/+5
The names of git commands are not meant to be entered at the commandline; they are just names. So we render them in italics, as is usual for command names in manpages. Using doit () { perl -e 'for (<>) { s/\`(git-[^\`.]*)\`/'\''\1'\''/g; print }' } for i in git*.txt config.txt diff*.txt blame*.txt fetch*.txt i18n.txt \ merge*.txt pretty*.txt pull*.txt rev*.txt urls*.txt do doit <"$i" >"$i+" && mv "$i+" "$i" done git diff . 2008-07-01Documentation formatting and cleanupLibravatar Jonathan Nieder1-5/+5
Following what appears to be the predominant style, format names of commands and commandlines both as `teletype text`. While we're at it, add articles ("a" and "the") in some places, italicize the name of the command in the manual page synopsis line, and add a comma or two where it seems appropriate. 2008-07-01Documentation: be consistent about "git-" versus "git "Libravatar Jonathan Nieder1-4/+4
Since the git-* commands are not installed in $(bindir), using "git-command <parameters>" in examples in the documentation is not a good idea. On the other hand, it is nice to be able to refer to each command using one hyphenated word. (There is no escaping it, anyway: man page names cannot have spaces in them.) This patch retains the dash in naming an operation, command, program, process, or action. Complete command lines that can be entered at a shell (i.e., without options omitted) are made to use the dashless form. The changes consist only of replacing some spaces with hyphens and vice versa. After a "s/ /-/g", the unpatched and patched versions are identical. Signed-off-by: Jonathan Nieder <jrnieder@uchicago.edu> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>

2008-01-06Documentation: rename gitlink macro to linkgitLibravatar Dan McGee1-1/+1
Between AsciiDoc 8.2.2 and 8.2.3, the following change was made to the stock Asciidoc configuration: @@ -149,7 +153,10 @@ # Inline macros. # Backslash prefix required for escape processing. # (?s) re flag for line spanning. -(?su)[\\]?(?P<name>\w(\w|-)*?):(?P<target>\S*?)(\[(?P<attrlist>.*?)\])= + +# Explicit so they can be nested. +(?su)[\\]?(?P<name>(http|https|ftp|file|mailto|callto|image|link)):(?P<target>\S*?)(\[(?P<attrlist>.*?)\])= + # Anchor: [[[id]]]. 2007-06-07War on whitespaceLibravatar Junio C Hamano1-1/+0

2007-05-13Documentation: Split description of pretty formats of commit logLibravatar Jakub Narebski1-1/+4
Split description of pretty formats into list of pretty options (--pretty and --encoding) in new file Documentation/pretty-options.txt and description of formats itself as a separate "PRETTY FORMATS" section in pretty-formats.txt While at it correct formatting a bit, to be better laid out in the resulting manpages: git-rev-list(1), git-show(1), git-log(1) and git-diff-tree(1). Those manpages now include pretty options in the same place as it was before, and description of formats just after all options. 2006-11-22Move --pretty options into Documentation/pretty-formats.txtLibravatar Chris Riddoch1-4/+1
Asciidoc-include it into the manuals for programs that use the --pretty command-line option, for consistency among the docs. This describes all the pretty-formats currently listed in the cmit_fmt enum in commit.h, and also briefly describes the presence and format of the 'Merge: ' line in some pretty formats. There's a hedge that limiting your view of history can affect what goes in the Merge: line, and that --abbrev/--no-abbrev do nothing to the 'raw' format. 2005-10-03[PATCH] Random documentation fixesLibravatar Jonas Fonseca1-10/+12
The fixes focuses on improving the HTML output. Most noteworthy: - Fix the Makefile to also make various *.html files depend on included files. - Consistently use 'NOTE: ...' instead of '[ ... ]' for additional info. - Fix ending '::' for description lists in OPTION section etc. - Fix paragraphs in description lists ending up as preformated text. - Always use listingblocks (preformatted text wrapped in lines with -----) for examples that span empty lines, so they are put in only one HTML block. - Use '1.' instead of '(1)' for numbered lists. - Fix linking to other GIT docs. - git-rev-list.txt: put option descriptions in an OPTION section. 2005-09-07Big tool rename.Libravatar Junio C Hamano1-2/+2
As promised, this is the "big tool rename" patch. The primary differences since 0.99.6 are: (1) git-*-script are no more. The commands installed do not have any such suffix so users do not have to remember if something is implemented as a shell script or not. (2) Many command names with 'cache' in them are renamed with 'index' if that is what they mean. There are backward compatibility symblic links so that you and Porcelains can keep using the old names, but the backward compatibility support is expected to be removed in the near future. 2005-06-03[PATCH] diff: Fix docs and add -O to diff-helper.Libravatar Junio C Hamano1-1/+1
This patch updates diff documentation and usage strings: - clarify the semantics of -R. It is not "output in reverse"; rather, it is "I will feed diff backwards". Semantically they are different when -C is involved. - describe -O in usage strings of diff-* brothers. It was implemented, documented but not described in usage text. Also it adds -O to diff-helper. Like -S (and unlike -M/-C/-B), this option can work on sanitized diff-raw output produced by the diff-* brothers. While we are at it, the call it makes to diffcore is cleaned up to use the diffcore_std() like everybody else, and the declaration for the low level diffcore routines are moved from diff.h (public) to diffcore.h (private between diff.c and diffcore backends). Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <junkio@cox.net> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>
2005-05-30[PATCH] Add -O<orderfile> option to diff-* brothers.Libravatar Junio C Hamano1-1/+5
A new diffcore filter diffcore-order is introduced. This takes a text file each of whose line is a shell glob pattern. Patches that match a glob pattern on an earlier line in the file are output before patches that match a later line, and patches that do not match any glob pattern are output last. A typical orderfile for git project probably should look like this: README Makefile Documentation *.h *.c Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <junkio@cox.net> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>
2005-05-30[PATCH] Add -B flag to diff-* brothers.Libravatar Junio C Hamano1-1/+4
A new diffcore transformation, diffcore-break.c, is introduced. When the -B flag is given, a patch that represents a complete rewrite is broken into a deletion followed by a creation. This makes it easier to review such a complete rewrite patch. The -B flag takes the same syntax as the -M and -C flags to specify the minimum amount of non-source material the resulting file needs to have to be considered a complete rewrite, and defaults to 99% if not specified. As the new test t4008-diff-break-rewrite.sh demonstrates, if a file is a complete rewrite, it is broken into a delete/create pair, which can further be subjected to the usual rename detection if -M or -C is used. For example, if file0 gets completely rewritten to make it as if it were rather based on file1 which itself disappeared, the following happens: The original change looks like this: file0 --> file0' (quite different from file0) file1 --> /dev/null After diffcore-break runs, it would become this: file0 --> /dev/null /dev/null --> file0' file1 --> /dev/null Then diffcore-rename matches them up: file1 --> file0' The internal score values are finer grained now. Earlier maximum of 10000 has been raised to 60000; there is no user visible changes but there is no reason to waste available bits. 2005-05-29[PATCH] Pickaxe fixes.Libravatar Junio C Hamano1-1/+6
A bug in the command line argument parsing code was making pickaxe not to work at all in diff-cache and diff-files commands. Embarrassingly enough, the working pickaxe in diff-tree tells me that it was not working in these two commands from day one. This patch fixes it. Also updates the documentation to describe the --pickaxe-all option. Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <junkio@cox.net> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>

2005-05-25[PATCH] show changed tree objects with recursive git-diff-treeLibravatar Junio C Hamano1-1/+4
This adds a "-t" flag to tell the raw diff output to include the tree objects in the output when doing a recursive diff. Since that's how the non-recursive output already handles trees and the flag thus doesn't make sense without "-r", I made "-t" imply "-r". 2005-05-21[PATCH] The diff-raw format updates.Libravatar Junio C Hamano1-3/+2
Update the diff-raw format as Linus and I discussed, except that it does not use sequence of underscore '_' letters to express nonexistence. All '0' mode is used for that purpose instead. The new diff-raw format can express rename/copy, and the earlier restriction that -M and -C _must_ be used with the patch format output is no longer necessary. The patch makes -M and -C flags independent of -p flag, so you need to say git-whatchanged -M -p to get the diff/patch format. Updated are both documentations and tests. 2005-05-21[PATCH] Introducing software archaeologist's tool "pickaxe".Libravatar Junio C Hamano1-1/+4
This steals the "pickaxe" feature from JIT and make it available to the bare Plumbing layer. From the command line, the user gives a string he is intersted in. Using the diff-core infrastructure previously introduced, it filters the differences to limit the output only to the diffs between <src> and <dst> where the string appears only in one but not in the other. For example: $ ./git-rev-list HEAD | ./git-diff-tree -Sdiff-tree-helper --stdin -M would show the diffs that touch the string "diff-tree-helper". In real software-archaeologist application, you would typically look for a few to several lines of code and see where that code came from. The "pickaxe" module runs after "rename/copy detection" module, so it even crosses the file rename boundary, as the above example demonstrates.
