2021-09-16git-cvsserver: use crypt correctly to compare password hashesLibravatar Carlo Marcelo Arenas Belón1-6/+4
c057bad370 (git-cvsserver: use a password file cvsserver pserver, 2010-05-15) adds a way for `git cvsserver` to provide authenticated pserver accounts without having clear text passwords, but uses the username instead of the password to the call for crypt(3). Correct that, and make sure the documentation correctly indicates how to obtain hashed passwords that could be used to populate this configuration, as well as correcting the hash that was used for the tests. This change will require that any user of this feature updates the hashes in their configuration, but has the advantage of using a more similar format than cvs uses, probably also easying any migration. 2021-04-10docs: fix linting issues due to incorrect relative section orderLibravatar Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason1-12/+12
Re-order the sections of a few manual pages to be consistent with the entirety of the rest of our documentation. This allows us to remove the just-added whitelist of "bad" order from lint-man-section-order.perl. I'm doing that this way around so that code will be easy to dig up if we'll need it in the future. I've intentionally not added some other sections such as EXAMPLES to the list of known sections. If we were to add that we'd find some out of order. Perhaps we'll want to order those consistently as well in the future, at which point whitelisting some of them might become handy again. 2019-08-05doc: typo: s/can not/cannot/ and s/is does/does/Libravatar Mark Rushakoff1-1/+1
"Can not" suggests one has the option to not do something, whereas "cannot" more strongly suggests something is disallowed or impossible. Noticed "can not", mistakenly used instead of "cannot" in git help glossary, then ran git grep 'can not' and found many other instances. Only files in the Documentation folder were modified. 'Can not' also occurs in some source code comments and some test assertion messages, and there is an error message and translation "can not move directory into itself" which I may fix and submit separately from the documentation change. Also noticed and fixed "is does" in git help fetch, but there are no other occurrences of that typo according to git grep. 2018-05-02doc: keep first level section header in upper caseLibravatar Nguyễn Thái Ngọc Duy1-5/+5
When formatted as a man page, 1st section header is always in upper case even if we write it otherwise. Make all 1st section headers uppercase to keep it close to the final output. This does affect html since case is kept there, but I still think it's a good idea to maintain a consistent style for 1st section headers. Some sections perhaps should become second sections instead, where case is kept, and for better organization. I will update if anyone has suggestions about this. While at there I also make some header more consistent (e.g. examples vs example) and fix a couple minor things here and there. 2017-08-23treewide: correct several "up-to-date" to "up to date"Libravatar Martin Ågren1-1/+1
Follow the Oxford style, which says to use "up-to-date" before the noun, but "up to date" after it. Don't change plumbing (specifically send-pack.c, but transport.c (git push) also has the same string). This was produced by grepping for "up-to-date" and "up to date". It turned out we only had to edit in one direction, removing the hyphens. Fix a typo in Documentation/git-diff-index.txt while we're there. In the earlier days, we used to spell the name of the system as GIT, to simulate as if it were typeset with capital G and IT in small caps. Later we stopped doing so at around 1.6.5 days. Let's stop doing so throughout the documentation. The name to refer to the whole system (and the concept it embodies) is "Git"; the command end-users type is "git". 2012-04-26docs: stop using asciidoc no-inline-literalLibravatar Jeff King1-1/+1
In asciidoc 7, backticks like `foo` produced a typographic effect, but did not otherwise affect the syntax. In asciidoc 8, backticks introduce an "inline literal" inside which markup is not interpreted. To keep compatibility with existing documents, asciidoc 8 has a "no-inline-literal" attribute to keep the old behavior. We enabled this so that the documentation could be built on either version. It has been several years now, and asciidoc 7 is no longer in wide use. We can now decide whether or not we want inline literals on their own merits, which are: 1. The source is much easier to read when the literal contains punctuation. You can use `master~1` instead of `master{tilde}1`. 2. They are less error-prone. Because of point (1), we tend to make mistakes and forget the extra layer of quoting. This patch removes the no-inline-literal attribute from the Makefile and converts every use of backticks in the documentation to an inline literal (they must be cleaned up, or the example above would literally show "{tilde}" in the output). Problematic sites were found by grepping for '`.*[{\\]' and examined and fixed manually. The results were then verified by comparing the output of "html2text" on the set of generated html pages. Doing so revealed that in addition to making the source more readable, this patch fixes several formatting bugs: - HTML rendering used the ellipsis character instead of literal "..." in code examples (like "git log A...B") - some code examples used the right-arrow character instead of '->' because they failed to quote - api-config.txt did not quote tilde, and the resulting HTML contained a bogus snippet like: <tt></tt> foo <tt>bar</tt> which caused some parsers to choke and omit whole sections of the page. - git-commit.txt confused ``foo`` (backticks inside a literal) with ``foo'' (matched double-quotes) - mentions of `A U Thor <author@example.com>` used to erroneously auto-generate a mailto footnote for author@example.com - the description of --word-diff=plain incorrectly showed the output as "[-removed-] and {added}", not "{+added+}". - using "prime" notation like: commit `C` and its replacement `C'` confused asciidoc into thinking that everything between the first backtick and the final apostrophe were meant to be inside matched quotes - asciidoc got confused by the escaping of some of our asterisks. In particular, `credential.\*` and `credential.<url>.\*` properly escaped the asterisk in the first case, but literally passed through the backslash in the second case. 2011-05-26docs: make sure literal "->" isn't converted to arrowLibravatar Jeff King1-1/+1
Recent versions of asciidoc will treat "->" as a single-glyph arrow symbol, unless it is inside a literal code block. This is a problem if we are discussing literal output and want to show the ASCII characters. Our usage falls into three categories: 1. Inside a code block. These can be left as-is. 2. Discussing literal output or code, but inside a paragraph. This patch escapes these as "\->". 3. Using the arrow as a symbolic element, such as "use the Edit->Account Settings menu". In this case, the arrow symbol is preferable, so we leave it as-is. Signed-off-by: Jeff King <peff@peff.net> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2011-03-11doc: drop author/documentation sections from most pagesLibravatar Jeff King1-16/+0
The point of these sections is generally to: 1. Give credit where it is due. 2. Give the reader an idea of where to ask questions or file bug reports. But they don't do a good job of either case. For (1), they are out of date and incomplete. A much more accurate answer can be gotten through shortlog or blame. For (2), the correct contact point is generally git@vger, and even if you wanted to cc the contact point, the out-of-date and incomplete fields mean you're likely sending to somebody useless. So let's drop the fields entirely from all manpages except git(1) itself. We already point people to the mailing list for bug reports there, and we can update the Authors section to give credit to the major contributors and point to shortlog and blame for more information. Each page has a "This is part of git" footer, so people can follow that to the main git manpage.

2010-01-10Documentation: spell 'git cmd' without dash throughoutLibravatar Thomas Rast1-2/+2
The documentation was quite inconsistent when spelling 'git cmd' if it only refers to the program, not to some specific invocation syntax: both 'git-cmd' and 'git cmd' spellings exist. The current trend goes towards dashless forms, and there is precedent in 647ac70 (git-svn.txt: stop using dash-form of commands., 2009-07-07) to actively eliminate the dashed variants. Replace 'git-cmd' with 'git cmd' throughout, except where git-shell, git-cvsserver, git-upload-pack, git-receive-pack, and git-upload-archive are concerned, because those really live in the $PATH.
2010-01-10Documentation: format full commands in typewriter fontLibravatar Thomas Rast1-1/+1
Use `code snippet` style instead of 'emphasis' for `git cmd ...` according to the following rules: * The SYNOPSIS sections are left untouched. * If the intent is that the user type the command exactly as given, it is `code`. If the user is only loosely referred to a command and/or option, it remains 'emphasised'. Signed-off-by: Thomas Rast <trast@student.ethz.ch>
2009-12-30CVS Server: Support reading base and roots from environmentLibravatar Phil Miller1-0/+15
The Gitosis single-account Git/ssh hosting system runs git commands through git-shell after confirming that the connecting user is authorized to access the requested repository. This works well for upload-pack and receive-pack, which take a repository argument through git-shell. This doesn't work so well for `cvs server', which is passed through literally, with no arguments. Allowing arguments risks sneaking in `--export-all', so that restriction should be maintained. Despite that, passing a repository root is necessary for per-user access control by the hosting software, and passing a base path improves usability without weakening security. Thus, git-cvsserver needs to come up with these values at runtime by some other means. Since git-shell preserves the environment for other purposes, the environment can carry these arguments as well. Thus, modify git-cvsserver to read $GIT_CVSSERVER_{BASE_PATH,ROOT} in the absence of equivalent command line arguments. 2008-07-05manpages: italicize nongit command names (if they are in teletype font)Libravatar Jonathan Nieder1-2/+2
Some manual pages use teletype font to set command names. We change them to use italics, instead. This creates a visual distinction between names of commands and command lines that can be typed at the command line. It is also more consistent with other man pages outside Git. In this patch, the commands named are non-git commands like bash. Signed-off-by: Jonathan Nieder <jrnieder@uchicago.edu> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>

2008-07-01Documentation: be consistent about "git-" versus "git "Libravatar Jonathan Nieder1-1/+1
Since the git-* commands are not installed in $(bindir), using "git-command <parameters>" in examples in the documentation is not a good idea. On the other hand, it is nice to be able to refer to each command using one hyphenated word. (There is no escaping it, anyway: man page names cannot have spaces in them.) This patch retains the dash in naming an operation, command, program, process, or action. Complete command lines that can be entered at a shell (i.e., without options omitted) are made to use the dashless form. The changes consist only of replacing some spaces with hyphens and vice versa. After a "s/ /-/g", the unpatched and patched versions are identical. Signed-off-by: Jonathan Nieder <jrnieder@uchicago.edu> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>

The OPTIONS section of a documentation file contains a list of the options a git command accepts. For SSH clients restricted to git-shell, CVS_SERVER does not have to be specified, because git-shell understands the default value of 'cvs' to mean git-cvsserver'. This makes it totally transparent to CVS users, but the instruction to set up CVS access for people with real shell access does not apply. Previous wording mentioning GIT_AUTHOR, GIT_COMMITTER variables was unclear that we really meant GIT_AUTHOR_(NAME|EMAIL), etc. Note that the .ssh/environment file is a good place to set these, and that the .bashrc is shell-specific. Add a bit of text to differentiate cvs -d (setting CVSROOT) from cvs co -d (setting the name of the newly checked out directory). Removed an extra 'Example:' string.
