2016-10-17Merge branch 'nd/commit-p-doc'Libravatar Junio C Hamano1-2/+4
Documentation for "git commit" was updated to clarify that "commit -p <paths>" adds to the current contents of the index to come up with what to commit. * nd/commit-p-doc: git-commit.txt: clarify --patch mode with pathspec
2016-10-05git-commit.txt: clarify --patch mode with pathspecLibravatar Duy Nguyen1-2/+4
How pathspec is used, with and without --interactive/--patch, is different. But this is not clear from the document. These changes hint the user to keep reading (to option #5) instead of stopping at #2 and assuming --patch/--interactive behaves the same way. And since all the options listed here always mention how the index is involved (or not) in the final commit, add that bit for #5 as well. This "on top of the index" is implied when you head over git-add(1), but if you just go straight to the "Interactive mode" and not read what git-add is for, you may miss it. 2016-06-28doc: typeset long command-line options as literalLibravatar Matthieu Moy1-1/+1
Similarly to the previous commit, use backquotes instead of forward-quotes, for long options. This was obtained with: perl -pi -e "s/'(--[a-z][a-z=<>-]*)'/\`\$1\`/g" *.txt and manual tweak to remove false positive in ascii-art (o'--o'--o' to describe rewritten history). 2016-06-28doc: typeset short command-line options as literalLibravatar Matthieu Moy1-1/+1
It was common in our documentation to surround short option names with forward quotes, which renders as italic in HTML. Instead, use backquotes which renders as monospace. This is one more step toward conformance to Documentation/CodingGuidelines. Wrap with backticks (monospaced font) unwrapped or single-quotes wrapped (italic type) environment variables which are followed by the word "environment". 2016-01-05Expand documentation describing --signoffLibravatar David A. Wheeler1-1/+5
Modify various document (man page) files to explain in more detail what --signoff means. This was inspired by https://lwn.net/Articles/669976/ where paulj noted, "adding [the] '-s' argument to [a] git commit doesn't really mean you have even heard of the DCO...". Extending git's documentation will make it easier to argue that developers understood --signoff when they use it. Signed-off-by: David A. 2015-09-21Documentation: explain optional arguments betterLibravatar Matthieu Moy1-1/+3
Improve the documentation of commands taking optional arguments in two ways: * Documents the behavior of '-O' (for grep) and '-S' (for commands creating commits) when used without the optional argument. * Document the syntax of these options. For the second point, the behavior is documented in gitcli(7), but it is easy for users to miss, and hard for the same user to understand why e.g. "git status -u no" does not work. Document this explicitly in the documentation of each short option having an optional argument: they are the most error prone since there is no '=' sign between the option and its argument. 2015-03-06commit/status: show the index-worktree diff with -v -vLibravatar Michael J Gruber1-0/+4
git commit and git status in long format show the diff between HEAD and the index when given -v. This allows previewing a commit to be made. They also list tracked files with unstaged changes, but without a diff. Introduce '-v -v' which shows the diff between the index and the worktree in addition to the HEAD index diff. This allows a review of unstaged changes which might be missing from the commit. In the case of '-v -v', additonal header lines Changes to be committed: and Changes not staged for commit: are inserted before the diffs, which are equal to those in the status part; the latter preceded by 50*"-" to make it stick out more. 2014-03-24parse-options: multi-word argh should use dash to separate wordsLibravatar Junio C Hamano1-1/+1
"When you need to use space, use dash" is a strange way to say that you must not use a space. Because it is more common for the command line descriptions to use dashed-multi-words, you do not even want to use spaces in these places. Rephrase the documentation to avoid this strangeness. Fix a few existing multi-word argument help strings, i.e. - GPG key-ids given to -S/--gpg-sign are "key-id"; - Refs used for storing notes are "notes-ref"; and - Expiry timestamps given to --expire are "expiry-date". and update the corresponding documentation pages. 2012-10-18status: add --long output format optionLibravatar Jeff King1-0/+4
You can currently set the output format to --short or --porcelain. There is no --long, because we default to it already. However, you may want to override an alias that uses "--short" to get back to the default. This requires a little bit of refactoring, because currently we use STATUS_FORMAT_LONG internally to mean the same as "the user did not specify anything". By expanding the enum to include STATUS_FORMAT_NONE, we can distinguish between the implicit and explicit cases. This effects these conditions: 1. The user has asked for NUL termination. With NONE, we currently default to turning on the porcelain mode. With an explicit --long, we would in theory use NUL termination with the long mode, but it does not support it. So we can just complain and die. 2. When an output format is given to "git commit", we default to "--dry-run". This behavior would now kick in when "--long" is given, too.
