2009-12-01Documentation: Fix a few i.e./e.g. mix-upsLibravatar Michael J Gruber1-1/+1
A git bundle can be transported by several means (such as e-mail), not only by snekaernet, so use e.g. instead of i.e. The mix-up in git-bundle.txt is obvious. Signed-off-by: Michael J Gruber <git@drmicha.warpmail.net> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2009-03-22Documentation: minor grammatical fixes and rewording in git-bundle.txtLibravatar David J. Mellor1-43/+43
This commit also converts all reference specifications to a monospaced font, as the embedded ~ character used in some of the references sometimes causes the text up to the next ~ to be displayed incorrectly as a subscript when the HTML pages are generated. This was tested with asciidoc 8.2.5. Signed-off-by: David J. Mellor <dmellor@whistlingcat.com> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2009-02-08doc/bundle: Use the more conventional suffix '.bundle'Libravatar Santi Béjar1-7/+7
Although it does not matter in general it is handled different by "git clone", as it removes it to make the "humanish" name of the new repository. Signed-off-by: Santi Béjar <santi@agolina.net> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2009-02-04git-bundle doc: update examplesLibravatar Nanako Shiraishi1-48/+84
This rewrites the example part of the bundle doucmentation to follow the suggestion made by Junio during a recent discussion (gmane 108030). Instead of just showing different ways to create and use bundles in a disconnected fashion, the rewritten example first shows the simplest "full cycle" of sneakernet workflow, and then introduces various variations. The words are mostly taken from Junio's outline. I only reformatted them and proofread to make sure the end result flows naturally. 2008-07-05manpages: italicize git command names (which were in teletype font)Libravatar Jonathan Nieder1-13/+13
The names of git commands are not meant to be entered at the commandline; they are just names. So we render them in italics, as is usual for command names in manpages. Using doit () { perl -e 'for (<>) { s/\`(git-[^\`.]*)\`/'\''\1'\''/g; print }' } for i in git*.txt config.txt diff*.txt blame*.txt fetch*.txt i18n.txt \ merge*.txt pretty*.txt pull*.txt rev*.txt urls*.txt do doit <"$i" >"$i+" && mv "$i+" "$i" done git diff . 2008-07-01Documentation formatting and cleanupLibravatar Jonathan Nieder1-14/+13
Following what appears to be the predominant style, format names of commands and commandlines both as `teletype text`. While we're at it, add articles ("a" and "the") in some places, italicize the name of the command in the manual page synopsis line, and add a comma or two where it seems appropriate. 2008-07-01Documentation: be consistent about "git-" versus "git "Libravatar Jonathan Nieder1-7/+7
Since the git-* commands are not installed in $(bindir), using "git-command <parameters>" in examples in the documentation is not a good idea. On the other hand, it is nice to be able to refer to each command using one hyphenated word. (There is no escaping it, anyway: man page names cannot have spaces in them.) This patch retains the dash in naming an operation, command, program, process, or action. Complete command lines that can be entered at a shell (i.e., without options omitted) are made to use the dashless form. The changes consist only of replacing some spaces with hyphens and vice versa. After a "s/ /-/g", the unpatched and patched versions are identical. Signed-off-by: Jonathan Nieder <jrnieder@uchicago.edu> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2008-06-06documentation: move git(7) to git(1)Libravatar Christian Couder1-1/+1
As the "git" man page describes the "git" command at the end-user level, it seems better to move it to man section 1. Signed-off-by: Christian Couder <chriscool@tuxfamily.org> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2008-05-27Documentation/git-bundle.txt: fix synopsisLibravatar Gerrit Pape1-1/+1
The <git-rev-list args> are mandatory to git bundle create, not optional. The usage output of git bundle is already right on this. Signed-off-by: Gerrit Pape <pape@smarden.org> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>

2008-01-06Documentation: rename gitlink macro to linkgitLibravatar Dan McGee1-5/+5
Between AsciiDoc 8.2.2 and 8.2.3, the following change was made to the stock Asciidoc configuration: @@ -149,7 +153,10 @@ # Inline macros. # Backslash prefix required for escape processing. # (?s) re flag for line spanning. -(?su)[\\]?(?P<name>\w(\w|-)*?):(?P<target>\S*?)(\[(?P<attrlist>.*?)\])= + +# Explicit so they can be nested. +(?su)[\\]?(?P<name>(http|https|ftp|file|mailto|callto|image|link)):(?P<target>\S*?)(\[(?P<attrlist>.*?)\])= + # Anchor: [[[id]]]. Bibliographic anchor. (?su)[\\]?\[\[\[(?P<attrlist>[\w][\w-]*?)\]\]\]=anchor3 # Anchor: [[id,xreflabel]] This default regex now matches explicit values, and unfortunately in this case gitlink was being matched by just 'link', causing the wrong inline macro template to be applied. By renaming the macro, we can avoid being matched by the wrong regex. Signed-off-by: Dan McGee <dpmcgee@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>

2007-02-22Add git-bundle: move objects and references by archiveLibravatar Johannes Schindelin1-0/+139
Some workflows require use of repositories on machines that cannot be connected, preventing use of git-fetch / git-push to transport objects and references between the repositories. git-bundle provides an alternate transport mechanism, effectively allowing git-fetch and git-pull to operate using sneakernet transport. `git-bundle create` allows the user to create a bundle containing one or more branches or tags, but with specified basis assumed to exist on the target repository. At the receiving end, git-bundle acts like git-fetch-pack, allowing the user to invoke git-fetch or git-pull using the bundle file as the URL. git-fetch and git-ls-remote determine they have a bundle URL by checking that the URL points to a file, but are otherwise unchanged in operation with bundles. The original patch was done by Mark Levedahl <mdl123@verizon.net>. It was updated to make git-bundle a builtin, and get rid of the tar format: now, the first line is supposed to say "# v2 git bundle", the next lines either contain a prerequisite ("-" followed by the hash of the needed commit), or a ref (the hash of a commit, followed by the name of the ref), and finally the pack. As a result, the bundle argument can be "-" now. Signed-off-by: Johannes Schindelin <johannes.schindelin@gmx.de> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <junkio@cox.net>
